I did find on another forum that someone successfully got the 5% off at target.com using the Cdn card. They didn't mention if it included free shipping but I would think so if it recognized it as a red card. I'm going to ship to my resort. I've been trying to decide if I go with the RBC red card or the US card. I think I'll go for the RBC one and apply tonight. I think my research is officially over on this subject!!

So I ended up doing a little cross border shopping last weekend and used my Canadian target RBC mastercard in the US Target store and also successfully got the 5% off.

Just an FYI, there is a blackfriday coupon where you spend $75 on Friday (Even online) and you get a 20% off coupon good for in store shopping between December 1-7th. Many are thinking that this coupon will not exclude entertainment cards (the group that the Disney Gift cards fall under) and thus will get people 20% off PLUS their 5% redcard discount!
I plan on ordering something on the 29th to earn the coupon (Which is emailed the following day) - having it ship to my hotel like I usually do... and then making a pit stop at Target near WDW to pick up gift cards to apply to our account on our trip next month! (We arrive on the 7th!) I will watch these boards to ensure they are getting the 20% off on the cards before I rush to the store on the 7th, but even if they dont work out... there are always great Disney Themed items at the WDW area targets that will be fun to have. (Plus a little Christmas shopping at an additional 20% doesnt hurt either!)

I recently retired from a bank and I can tell you 99% of all Canadian credit cards charge a 2.5% top up on the going rate for the purchase of u.s. money.
what this means is, if you were to go into a bank and buy $100.00 us (lets assume the conversion rate is 2.5%) it would cost you 102.50. if you were to charge that same $100 to your Canadian credit card it would cost you $105.00 because you pay the rate of the day (2.5%) PLUS a conversion rate of 2.5%.
that takes the 5% savings and turns it into a 2.5% savings. your losing on the deal.
if you were to us a u.s. credit card (lots of banks have them) or a red card from a u.s. target (I have one) then its a totally different story. your just going to pay the daily rate the bank is offering to pay your bill.
hope this is understandable. sorry its so long.

Credit cards administered by Chase Canada do not impose any foreign transaction fees. There are multiple options to choose from:

Thanks for the links Gina. The Chase cards with no annual fee and no FX markup are a good option and it seems that some of those fit the bill. I have my eye on the Amazon.ca card....


The only exception would be to consider US Target purchases (ie: disney GCs) if you have a Canadian Target mastercard.

Chase card: At a rate of 1.065, purchase $100 USD GC and pay $106.50 CAD.

Target Canadian mastercard: At a rate of 1.065, purchase $100 USD GC as follows:
$100 USD * 95% = $95 USD
$95 USD * 1.065 * 1.025 = $103.70 CAD


If I understand the 2.5% FX fee (correct me if I'm wrong folks), while we end up with an effective FX rate of 1.0916 on non-Target purchases, with the 5% off at Target, this lowers the effective FX rate to 1.0370.



So for me, I still like to purchase Disney GCs at Target.
Bonus: Saves me from entering my PIN on every magicband purchase.

Just remember to treat those Disney GCs like cash folks!

if you use a target card to purchase the gift cards you get 5% off of the purchase price. example- you buy $100 in disney gift cards with cash its $100 however if you purchase $100 disney gift cards with target card its $95 because they give you the discount.
