Disney Gift Cards at the parks?

I read my weekly newsletter from allears and it stated something about using the Disney Gift card to pay for purchases. Can someone tell me more about the gift cards. Where can they be used? Are they accepted at restaurants around WDW? What about the shops? Can we purchase the Disney gift card at the Disney store to use at WDW?
Where can we buy them at WDW? Any info would be helpful. We usually travel with Am. Express traverlers checks but these sound like a better idea.

I had 5 of these cards last week (mom had 2) and they were great. I got mine from rewards programs - so that's why I had 5 instead of one. I didn't have a problem using them anywhere. I know the front desks aren't set up to take them (to pay for rooms and such) but they will be soon. Just about everywhere else is set up, as long as they're set up for credit cards. So CMs walking around selling things from a glow cart for example, they aren't going to be able to take the cards.

I used mine in many shops, restaurants, and even Food and Wine booths. The only problem I came across is that they're still pretty new and it seems not all CMs have come across them and were stumped, but there was always a CM nearby to walk them through it so it never slowed us down.
