I was talking to a friend who went to WDW last June. He mentioned to me that two disney restaurants wouldn't accept his disney gift card as a form of payment. He couldn't remember which two it was. Has anyone else had an issue like this? I thought all disney restaurants had to accept gift cards.

He was probably at the Swan or Dolphin. Many people think they are Disney properties but they are not. Therefore, they do not accept Disney gift cards.

Either that or one of the Downtown Disney, Animal Kingdom, Boardwalk restaurants that's not owned by Disney (Rainforest Cafe, Jellyrolls, etc.).

I told him some aren't disney owned. I know they ate at rainforest cafe and that was probably one of them. I believe the other places they ate were all in the parks. I'll try and find out.

but if you use your room card as payment you can pay your balance with gift cards correct?

Seriously? That many Epcot restaurants??? I was definately planning on using the Disney Rewards Gift Card to pay for most meals.

Can anyone confirm that you can do the room charge thing at these restaurants? and then pay it off with the gift card? If they aren't Disney owned how is this possible? I wouldn't think that you could charge Rain Forest Cafe to your room.

What about Yak and Yeti?

Disney Visa website says that the Disney Redemption card is good for dining in the theme parks at "all locations that accept credit cards" But a Disney gift card might be different from the Disney Visa Redemption Card.

Also, since Rainforest Cafe isn't in the park , that might not count. And certainly the Swan Dolphin hotels are not Disney owned.

If this card is a Visa reward card, it is technically a debit gift card, not a Disney Gift Card. If it has a Visa logo on the card, it is considered the same way a pre-paid debit card would be in terms of using it as payment. It is essentially the same thing as a pre-paid Visa card you might buy as a gift for someone. The difference is the Disney gift card is Disney branded and the Visa gift card can be used anywhere Visa can be used. And, yes, you can room charge at Yak and Yeti and Rainforest Cafe but you could also use your Visa gift card, if that is what you have.

You can always "charge to the room" with your magic band at these locations, and then use the gifts card at the resort to pay down your charges.

This is what we do on every trip. Easier than keeping track of balances on the reward card. We just go down every few days and review our bill and pay it down.

True, but that only works if you're staying on site.

You can charge to your room anywhere, including these restaurants. But do keep in mind that in order to have room charging privilages, you do need to link a credit card to your MB. You can't directly link a gift card or reward card. Once you reach your spending limit ($500/value, $1000/mod, $1500/deluxe), your card will be charged and your limit will reset. So, if you want to pay everything in gift cards or rewards cards with nothing going on your credit card, you need to keep track of how much you're charging to your room and stop at the front desk to apply the gift cards before you reach your spending limit.

I think the poster you quoted was referring to a rewards card from a Disney Visa, which is the redemption of points for Disney dollars. It's been a while since I've redeemed points onto a card, but the last time I did it was not a Visa gift card. It was akin to a gift card, and it could only be used at Disney and for Disney. The only difference is that it's reloadable if you want to redeem more points from your card. It's my understanding the rewards cards are treated the same way as a Disney gift card.
