Disney Gator

At UF, where I attended 8 years, there are Gators in most ponds. It is not unusual for some to be sunning themselves not far from sunbathers. After you get used to it, no one minds. I have seen people retrieve errant frisbee tosses that land near them. They are cold-blooded, meaning they conserve energy, and do not move unless they feel they must

We all enjoyed searching for the BCV alligator last August.
Spotted him three times.

He would just float around in the water with some huge turtles and fish swimming right up to him.
None of the other animals in the water seemed to be afraid of him, he never once tried to eat one of them, so my kids finally decided that they must all be friends.

Here's a few pics.........he was pretty big, but I don't want to guesstimate on his length.

This is a picture of one of the turtles, he was huge!

When we left the resort, we stopped on the bridge over the canal and DD told "Al" to behave and not eat any parents or little kids.

We did see some people tossing him cereal, I think it was Captain Crunch.

I live in Florida too, and I've seen lots of gators, but never really saw one at Disney, except of course where they are supposed to be. Last week at Blizzard Beach though I did see a garter snake crossing the sidewalk. One of the kids was trying to capture it with a towel. Also at Pop Century there is a lot of rabbits. I also saw a couple at Port Orleans Riverside as well.

There is a story I heard from a CM once about a snake on the monorail. They have codes for different events that can happen and a new CM was driving the monorail when he spotted the snake. He called dispatch about the snake, but he used the wrong code. After a few minutes, he radioed back in that the problem was solved. He threw it out the window, not saying what he threw out the window. What he didn't realize was the code he gave was not "snake in car" but "unruly passenger" which really freaked dispatch out until they learned the truth.

Really sadly, all those cute baby ducks you guys are seeing? a lot of them will end up lunch fro the gators:(

This just breaks my heart. But this is the way nature works. The gator is just being a gator. You can't fault him for that. I just hope they do it quickly.

sodaseller- are you saying that it would be OK to swim in a river where you know there are gators?

Wouldn't it be reasonable for the gator to grab you by the head? Like what happened last week in Florida?

What happened last week?

Last week there was a story in the news here in Florida about a 12 year old boy that went jumping into a pond to cool off and was attacked by an alligator. Supposedly, the child punched the gator and the gator let go. I saw supposedly because this was if I remember correctly a VERY large alligator and I just don't see a 12 year old boy punching it affecting him too much. I think the gator didn't realize what he was biting into and when he did he let go. The boy needed some stitches but turned out to be fine.

We saw a gator at MK while on the train in between Adventureland and Frontierland. He was off to the left on the other side of the fence in a small parking lot. He was almost up to the fence and just laying there for everyone to see. Also saw a HUGE turtle in the river while on the riverboat.

OK... If you are swimming in a river and an alligator grabs you, punch him in the nose. If that doesn't work, poke him in the eye with your bloody stump!

Nah, I'll just give the gator plenty of space.

I agree with Flyinglizard on this one.

If we can agree to STRESS one very important thing to those reading this thread: "PLEASE don't feed the gators!" It is against the law for good reasons, and in the end, you may bring harm to your self, but will certainly bring harm to the alligator.

Florida law prohibits feeding any wildlife. CM's should be monitoring this rather closely in the areas where a gator has been spotted I would think. That being said... As I mentioned before in this thread, we saw a 4-5 foot gator under the bridge across from Tom Sawyer's Island. He had just finished eating a turkey leg he received from a 2 yr old. Animal Control had been called to have him removed. By the way... There were 2 CM's and a Disney Security Guard there also making sure no one else fed the gator.

Once you live in Florida for several years gators are not big thing. .

We also live in an area of the country where alligators are very common. However, I recently spent a week at WDW, hoping to see an alligator there. I think that would be so neat to see one there. Of course, DH sees them regularly on the Disney golf courses, but I've yet to see one (even looked at BCV-no luck).
