Disney Fantasy internet access

If you sign up for internet on embarkation day, you will get a 50MB package for free. That was enough for me to check email for most of my 7 night cruise. I did purchase a second small package for the last few days of the cruise because I was posting some photos to FB and such. But if all you need is email access, you can probably get by with the free package.

Oh wow...thanks for this info. I had just checked the charges and saw $19 for 100MB and $38 for $300MB. I guess we will sign up for the free package and then add to it if we think it's necessary!

Just make sure you sign up before midnight that first day. It's really easy. Info will be in the Navigator you get at check in. Make sure to disable automatic updates as they can suck up your data allotment quickly.

I just got off the Disney Magic. If you have an iPad or other Mac, it can be worth it to take your device to the Internet desk and have them turn off all of the automatic updates. I thought I had everything turned off, but one still slipped through and I woke up the next morning to discover that we'd blown through our 1000MB of data.

On the plus side, when I went down to the Internet Desk to find out how it had happened, they turned off the one switch I hadn't found, and 'refunded' me the data used in the download. I wasn't the only person in line with this problem, but I was really impressed with that they made the refund.

I wish I had known to go the Internet Desk about that. We had thought we had turned off all updates but we kept running through data and buying more.
I really wish they would come out with an unlimited package. I know some people like the idea that you have to unplug while on the ship but we have elderly family at home and try to keep in touch while on the cruise.

We "purchased" the 50MB package on our Dream and 2 Fantasy B2B cruises. One 50MB package on the first day of each cruise. It was plenty for us to "keep in touch" with emails and a small amount of news reading.

We didn't have purchase any additional internet time.

where is the internet desk? i have never used internet on board but with the 50 mb i may check emails.

I haven't heard of this free 50 MB before. Is it free without a purchase? Is it per person or per cabin?

It's generally advertised on the back of the Navigator you get in at check in at the port. Totally free, as long as you sign up before midnight the first night.

Per person vs per room--- it varies. Generally it's per room. Some people have reported it was per person on select cruises. You'll have to read the ad in your particular Navigator.

On the Fantasy, the internet desk was on deck 4, near the DVC desk and the Onboard Booking desk. I'd imagine it's in a similar place on the other ships.

It is totally free. No additional purchase is needed. My experience has been that it is per cabin.

The same thing happened to us last year, but I figured it was our fault we hadn't thought to turn the auto updates off. Then it happened again this year, despite my believing I'd turned off all the automatic updates. I decided I needed to visit the internet desk, if only to figure out how to prevent the auto updates from happening again, since the download had stalled when it reached the end of my package. The person working there was very thorough, turned everything off, then refunded my MBs without my even asking.

I thought I'd share so maybe it could save others some grief.

On the Magic, the Internet desk was at one end of the Promenade Lounge on deck 3.

IIRC it was said the internet cafe on the Magic was removed during the last dry dock updates, so only the Wonder still has one.

The 'cafe' portion is gone on the Magic. No computers available for general use. But there is a single, staffed desk for people with internet issues.

Thank you Princess Schmoo and Maggie's Mom! This is good to know!

Another story of getting burned on data usage. DD was listening to music one afternoon, and didn't realize she was streaming (she thought she was listening to locally stored music). I was keeping tabs on data and noticed it jump over 300mb in one afternoon - I knew something was wrong. I turned off streaming all together in her Play Music app after that and didn't have any more surprises.

So it's not just automatic updates - this was a detailed setting in the music app.

Thanks everybody for the helpful tips on turning off internet usage. While DH and I are also pretty tech savvy, I can see where it wouldn't take much to have this be an issue. I will suggest to him to check with the internet desk as well just to be safe. I want him to easily be able to check in with his parents back at home daily and not have to worry about his mom and this will just make things so much easier.
