Disney during Thanksgiving

For those who have gone to WDW during the week of Thanksgiving: just how bad are the crowds? I usually go between Thanksgiving and Christmas but may be going the week of Thanksgiving this year since some family members accompanying us have school age kids. And if you had to pick, would you choose to go the week of Thanksgiving OR the week after Christmas? Thanks!

I can't comment on the week after Christmas but we love going Thanksgiving week! Due to children in school, we didn't have a choice to go during the off season. We have been three times for Thanksgiving...and would go every year if I could. The weather is beautiful and the Christmas decorations are up. The crowds are definitely manageable...but it is crowded. We usually arrive the Saturday before Thanksgiving and leave the Saturday after. We left on the Sunday after once...NEVER again :scared1: Traffic was horrific...all the way to Ohio.
We have found that we do much of what we want early in the week as the crowds grow the closer you get to Thanksgiving...Wednesday-Friday was really busy. Make sure you make your ADR's at the 180 day mark especially for Thanksgiving day. With a plan...you will have a wonderful trip.
It really is a great time to go! :goodvibes

Thanks for the advice! It makes me feel a little better, if we end up having to go that week. We would arrive on the Sunday before Thanksgiving & will depart the following Saturday. We would have Hoppers & do a couple of the parks (AK & Epcot) in the same day since we've been to WDW several times. We'll be going to MK 3 of the days we're there since our DS will be 3. We took him for his 1st trip this past Dec. I just hope we can ride his favorite rides multiple times like we did on his 1st trip!

Okay, so I'm still needing some advice on these weeks. Now, I am thinking that maybe the week before Christmas would be better than the week of Thanksgiving and the week after Christmas. I think, from all that I've read on here, that I've pretty much ruled out the week after Christmas, due to crowds. Also, our package to stay at WL would be about $1200 more for that week. So, which is better: Thanksgiving week or week BEFORE Christmas? Thanks!

We just returned from WDW the week after Thanksgiving and I wasn't too keen on the crowds......managble in the am but got worse as the day wore on to too crowded in the early evenings. We also run into a week of really cold weather (not to my liking, I go to Florida to sweat not shiver) so we're ruling out that time period (seems everyone knows about that week and free dining jacks up the attendance.

I've been watching these boards on the week before and after Christmas and am not impressed with either week, also watched the ride times and they were in the 45-120 min. varieties. I'm going to go out on a limb and say if I had my druthers, I'd go the first or second week of December...possible to stay in value or regular season instead of peak or holiday...big resort rate difference.

The WK is fablous, in our book, the best resort on property by location and price (we're MK fans). My biggest draw back on your time periods is the weather, we like lounging at the pool, pool picnic, late night swims and it would be hard to be there and not be able to enjoy the pool, another reason we go to WDW, so I'm not much help but those are our experiences. I hate to pay all that money and see endless lines for attractions, FP or no FP and just using the parks for EMH's is kind of a waste....I want the whole day to be manageable.

We used to go Thanksgiving week as our "standard" disney trip, until my son entered college. This year we were in Disney from 12/20 through 12/28. I am hopefully completing a trip report soon, but my conclusion on crowds is that it's all a matter of perspective and managing expectations. I went thinking that the crowds would be massive Christmas day and after. Our experience with crowds was typical of Thanksgiving week, and sometimes they seemed a bit lighter, to tell you the truth. HOWEVER, we avoided MK especially on Christmas day and got up early on 12/27 to do the MK rope drop (7 am EMH, and it was COLD!) and we were (literally) the only family actually waiting at the entrance to get in on the left side when the opened the park - there were some families enjoying the train ceremony, and a few families on the other side, I think, but we walked alone down main street on 12/27 at 7 am and rode space mountain 3 times in a row, then buzz 3 times in a row, big thunder 2X (too cold to do more), haunted mansion, peter pan, pirates, jungle cruise, stitch, then went back and used a fp for space mountain (the wait was about 30 minutes by 10 am) and did stitch before calling it a day to go back to the resort, eat "brunch", and take a rest. We enjoyed MK then very much (and it was 2 days after Christmas).

We tried MK on our arrival day on 12/20, but didn't get to the park until about 1 pm. It was quite busy, and the waits for everything were long (except stitch, laugh club, small world). We were able to get a fp for Space with a return time of 11:30 pm. We did return to the park for our 11:30 fp but the parades made it very tough to navigate the park, it was pretty busy, and we didn't stay long. There were extra magic hours at night from 12-3am but I think EMH at night aren't as valuable as morning.

Our experiences at all of the other parks were similar. I don't think the day you go depends nearly as much as what TIME you are willing to get to the park. If you get up early and do the big attractions first the rewards in terms of time saved are huge - then you can either go back to the resort to enjoy the pool while everyone else waits in lines, or you can enjoy street entertainment and smaller attractions. We did, just for the record, sleep in on 12/24 and 12/25 knowing that we'd stay at the parks pretty late those days - Epcot (CP) and Hollywood Studios, respectively.

So.....I'd go at Christmas again (and we probably will) without hesitation. I'd go Thanksgiving. Heck, if anyone wants to give me a trip I'd go anytime! Just know that if it's a busy time you need to get up early. And....I personally don't know a true "non-busy" time at Disney. if you go to WDW any time expecting to just walk on every ride you want to do, you'll be disappointed regardless. If you expect that you'll be enjoying the parks with thousands of your closest friends and plan accordingly, you'll have a great trip!

....now.....I'd best go finish that trip report!

Crowds at Thanksgiving can be very dependent on the weather, which can vary widely from day to day. Christmas can be impacted by weather too, but not to the same extent as Thanksgiving IMO.

When we where there for Thanksgiving several years ago, for example, Epcot on Thanksgiving day was the busiest I have ever seen a park. It also was 85 degrees and sunny that day. A cold front came through on Friday, however, and temps dropped more than 40 degrees. As a result, DHS was a ghost town on Saturday and the only long line we stood in was at the only place that was serving hot chocolate.

Thank you all for the advice! I feel much better about having to go during the holiday season, whether it be Thanksgiving week or around Christmas.

We are going for the first time during Thanksgiving week. We usually go in Oct. We will be there Nov.23-28, after our Nov.20 Disney Cruise! We know it will be crowded and are ready for it. But it's Disney and we will have an awesome time no matter what!

My thought for myself is.... if the crowds are big, at least the weather is nice! I usually go in June and the crowds are large and it is hot and humid. Guess I'll find out if I'm right in a few months. We'll be there Nov 23-27.

Early in the week it isn't bad but stating Wednesday (day before T-day) it gets busy and then remains pretty high until that Sunday. DHS and the Osbourne lights was very busy last Thanksgiving. but so worth it.

Hi! We will be there from 11/19-11/26. This will be our first time around holiday season. Four months from today!

I am also interested to know about black friday shopping at downtown. Do they open early? Any special sales?

Another question, we will be in DHS on Thanksgiving day - will the Osborne Lights be on display that night?

Thanks!

The lights will be on display Thanksgiving night. I can't give any info about the shopping on black friday, but I do think I remember hearing people talking about getting up early and hitting downtown disney then.

We have gone 2 weeks before Christmas and it was packed wait times where still 45-120 mins. Going back though. Only time wife could get off work sigh.
