The Disney Dream is now Yellow. Has anyone heard anything as to why? We are due to board tomorrow. https://www.cdc.gov/quarantine/cruise/cruise-ship-color-status.html

  • Yellow status means the ship has met the threshold for CDC investigation, which includes one of the following criteria:
    • at or above the investigation threshold for crew COVID-19 cases,
    • at or above the investigation threshold for passenger COVID-19 cases; or
    • state or local health department notified CDC of passenger COVID-19 cases occurring within 5 days of disembarkation.

Based on the below, this would mean 1.4 people tested positive assuming about 1,400 guests. I'd really like to know the actual circumstances but that doesn't sound crazy.

Yellow Ship Criteria
  • Ship is at or above CDC’s investigation threshold:
    • Restricted Voyages:
      • Cases reported in 0.10% or more of passengers (e.g., if 6500* passengers on board, CDC’s investigation threshold is met if there are 7 or more cases among passengers occurring during the previous 7 days), or
        • This percentage includes passenger cases occurring within 5 days of disembarkation that CDC was notified of by state or local health departments.
      • One or more cases reported in crew.
    • Simulated Voyages:
      • Cases reported in 1.5% or more of passengers, or
      • Cases reported in 1.0% or more of crew.
    • Ships with Crew Only (i.e., not yet submitted requests for simulated voyages or applications for restricted voyages, pending CDC approval, or sailing at a later date).
      • Cases reported in 1.0% or more of crew.
  • OR
  • During the past 7 days, the ship failed to submit one or more daily EDC submissions on time (by 1200 ET). On a weekly basis, CDC emails all ships a reminder to submit the EDC form. In addition, CDC sends a reminder email if a ship does not submit their EDC form.
*The largest cruise ships can carry up to 6500 passengers on board.

  • Green status means the ship has no reports of cases of COVID-19 or COVID-19-like illness.
  • Orange status means the ship has reported cases of COVID-19 but is below the threshold for CDC investigation.
  • Red status means the ship is at or above the threshold for passenger and crew COVID-19 cases. Based on CDC’s investigation, additional public health precautions, such as returning to port immediately or delaying the next voyage, will be taken to help ensure the health and safety of onboard travelers or newly arriving travelers.
  • Gray status means CDC has not reviewed or confirmed the cruise ship operator’s health and safety protocols. This status only applies to cruise ships arriving in, located within, or departing from a port in Florida that chose to not follow the CSO on a voluntary basis.
The order of color tiers is odd. You'd think Orange would come between Yellow and Red.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the colors. It looks like every ship carrying passengers is yellow or orange. And by your calculations, it's a very small percentage that can trigger that change in color coding. Or someone could have been a few minutes late sending an email!

It also states "The threshold for investigation was developed based on several factors, including the need for transparency while acknowledging that cruising is not a zero-risk activity. This investigation threshold gives CDC and the cruise industry the ability to work closely together to protect the health and safety of those on board and in communities. CDC’s objectives for establishing the threshold included reducing ongoing COVID-19 transmission between voyages and ensuring medical resources on board are not overwhelmed. This threshold may be modified for future voyages based on lessons learned from simulated voyages or completed restricted passenger voyages, the evolution of the pandemic, or other factors."

Hope you enjoy your cruise!

One of the reasons that kicks investigation is contact tracing and looking for unreported cases.

I thought the same thing!

Or just one crew member...

It could be more cases, but the next threshold (Red) is not clearly defined in terms of cases.

I really expect most of the ships, if not all of the ships, to go between Green and Yellow/Orange for some time. Cases on board will be effectively unavoidable, IMO.

Maybe it was related to the crew member that had to be dropped off the other day?

Just noticed that the Dream is back to Yellow and the Fantasy is Orange. Last time I checked, both were Green. Any recent cruisers know or hear anything about cases onboard recent sailings?

I was on the Fantasy 10/9-10/16 and just checked the status out of curiosity. I didn't hear of anything while onboard and I would think with the precautions in place that anyone with COVID onboard might have been exposed prior to boarding (and not tested positive if that's possible).

It's quite possible if a passenger was exposed 1-2 days before testing. The CDC is more concerned with spread on the ship, though. Having one or a few passengers test positive isn't enough to trigger to investigation for a ship as large as Dream or Fantasy.

We were on that cruise - one child tested positive on the last day. I know this because my child was exposed at kids club and we had to go to the quarantine area on the Friday night before leaving the ship. Luckily we ended up being negative.

Can you briefly describe how they moved you, etc.? Did CMs move your stuff after you packed? Did you test in your room or go to the infirmary?

Like everyone else - our daughter tested early on Friday morning in our room. We were negative and spent the day on Castaway Cay. My app didn’t work on the island because of no wi-fi service. When we got back about 4:45pm we had a message waiting for us that our daughter needed to be tested again. A nurse in a hazmat suit came to our room and administered a PCR test. It took about one hour and we were negative. Our daughter was not allowed to leave the room during this time and we had a security guard outside our door. Disney then called us and said even though our test was negative we needed to go to the quarantine area. We had about 1/2 hour to pack. At that point we had four cast members in hazmat suits block off part of the hallway and escort us to the second floor quarantine area via the crew elevator. We were not allowed to leave until we got off the ship. Disney was amazing and made sure we got room service for food etc. This was because our child was in the same group at kids club during the week with the one positive child.Other families in that group were quarantined also. It was an adventure for sure! Again, Disney was fantastic.

What are these numbers based on? You can't board if you test positive at the port so unless people are getting symptoms on board and getting tested, it would have to be crew. Right?

Oh wow - that seriously stinks. Is EVERYONE being tested on the 7-night cruises or just unvaccinated kids? We are sailing in December and I'm not up on the procedures. We sailed twice in September, but only 4-night sailings.
