Disney Dream - August 8, 2016!

I was wondering how to find single parents on this trip? I've cruised 17 times but this is my first time alone with my kids. Would like to have some other parents to hang out with.
My daughters are 11, 13, and 15
Thanks
Nancy

Nancy, that is a really good question. I hope some of our other families comment on your question, too. You have cruised quite a bit and know there is so much to do and your daughters are at the age where they may want to do their own thing. I took my son to Disney World a couple years ago when my husband was on a business trip and though we loved each other's company there was also an awkwardness to some of the trip just because I wanted some other adults to talk to -- so let's see if our friends on this thread can help.

Robinson family of three to set sail 8/8/2016! Our first Disney Cruise and our son will be celebrating his 5th birthday!!! Looking to experience everything we can and have been reading a lot about fish extenders. How do I get involved. I'm a designer, so this should be FUN!!!!!

Hey Wendi!
Welcome to the Disney Dream (August 8th - August 12th) thread. So happy to have you. You guys are going to have a BLAST on the dream. What an awesome age for your son because there is so much to do for the younger sailors on the ship. The fish extender game :fish:is so much fun. I just love jogging from room to room to leave our little gifts in the fish extender holders. It is just one more added thing to look forward to!

OK, it is very easy to get involved. I am just the facilitator and try to do my best to keep the groups active and organized. I will put you in Group #3, the DAYDREAMERS. I will repost the list as soon as I get your information so you can see everyone. I am trying to keep each group about 8 - 10 families at most so the game doesn't become too burdensome because we want it to be FUN!

All I need to know is your Cabin number, how many in the party, names, ages (for kids but parents are welcome to share their secrets too!), and favorite characters. Also, if anyone has any allergies (food or otherwise) please let us know. I will then add you to Group #3. I think your family will be the last one in Group #3 and if more people join I will start them in a new group.

You then just make/purchase small gifts for the families in your group and typically I start the game on the Tuesday of our voyage just to give everyone time to unpack on Day one and hang their fish extenders on the hooks. I just love seeing all the creative extenders and then checking to see our little gifts! What fun!

Anyway, if you have any questions, please share them here and I, or other people on our thread, will help you answer them.

Have a Disney Day, Wendi!

Thank you Alyson!!! How does the fish extender thing work? Something everyday of the trip is left, per person in the family?

Hi again,
Just one gift per person is left, generally. You won't believe once you get started how the gifts compile very quickly. Last year I made gifts for the adults to share and then for each child. Some people make one giant gift that the family can share -- it is really up to you. Some gifts are bought while others tend to be really creative and homemade! I could not believe some of the cute things we got last year. I ended up bringing an extra suitcase JUST to carry my fish extender gifts, but we also had larger groups which is why I am keeping our different groups about 8 - 10 families each. I thought my son would have the most fun delivering the gifts but...nope! My husband and I jogged the ship and delivered like Secret Santas! One time we were caught by a few people just waking up as they were crossing the hall to another cabin - lol. You can deliver the gifts anytime on Tues/Wed/Thurs of our cruise. We will be disembarking on Friday morning so that day is out. And since some people board in the early afternoon on the first day and immediately want to get involved in activities, I generally start the game on Tuesday of the cruise so everyone has time to find their extender, hang it, get unpacked a bit and organize the gifts!

If anyone forgets their list while traveling I always have extras in our room, too!

So, it is really whatever and however you would like to do it.

And I am sure you have seen pictures of the fish extenders themselves!? You can make them (or order them from Etsy) to look however you like. There is a metal hook like a seahorse or other sea creatures to the left or right of your cabin door and this is where you will hang your extender. And remember that you can put magnets on your door, too. It makes it easier to find your door down long corridors, too!

Hope this helps, Wendi!

Hi Alyson,
We are very excited about our trip on the Disney Dream on 8th August and I was wondering if you had any more space for us to join your Fish Extender group?
We are a family of 6, from Cambridge in the UK, and will be visiting Disneyworld and Universal Studios this summer. Although we've been lucky enough to visit Florida before, we have never been in the summer and have never been on any kind of cruise before - so as you can imagine we are very, very excited! (although very aware that we have a lot to find out about cruising!).
I had read about Fish Extender groups but didn't really understand much about it until I read through your thread here - it really does sound such a lovely idea : )
I think you're amazing to have the energy to set all this up!
If you are full, it's fine - but I hope you don't mind me asking. :-)

Hello!
I am so excited that you found us and even more excited for your family because your vacation is going to be absolutely amazing! Disney World, Universal Studios AND the cruise on the Disney Dream -- what an adventure in FUN! There is so much to see and do! I don't know if it is better to visit the parks before or after the cruise (people have recommended both ideas) but last year we visited the parks after the cruise and we were so exhausted because we did so much on the cruise -- more than I ever would have thought. But we did still have tons of fun. Either way your vacation sounds so memorable. And Universal Studios, too! That is awesome.

Yes, your family can most definitely join the fish extender game. :fish:The more the merrier!

I am going to start a new group with your family once I receive your cabin number, names in your party, ages and who each person's favorite character is. I bet we'll see more families join our game so I will start a fourth group with your family. Should a few weeks go by and no one else joins I will move your family back to group three. I hope that sounds OK. I just don't want to leave anyone out who wishes to join our fun!

Since you read through the thread you are probably familiar with how it works. Once I receive your family's information I will re-post the entire list for everyone.

And please feel free to ask questions of the group because this is about the time when everyone starts to get really excited!

Thanks so much.

Hello! My husband, 12 year old son Conor, and I will be sailing the Disney Dream for the second time this August (8th through the 12th). I believe that is the same cruise as you and your fiancé! Hurray -- and congratulations! So, if we are on the same cruise.

We are from Pennsylvania but visit WDW a couple times a year and now we won't visit without adding a cruise -- it is THAT wonderful. I also facilitated the Disney Dream's Fish Extender Game last year on the cruise. We had about 15 families participate in the game and had so much fun. Are you familiar with that activity? It is basically a 'secret santa' on board the ship. There is a lot of communication that happens beforehand but it ended up being so much fun! You can look on etsy or pinterest to see the various 'fish extender' holders for your cruise door. I don't want to tell you too much in case you are not interested in participating. :-). It doesn't matter who is in your party, it is such a fun activity, but with your wedding...it might cause added things to do!

Anyway, if there is anything I can help with or answer, just let me know. You have made the right choice sailing on the Disney Dream -- you will have a blast!

Best wishes!
Alyson
Hi Denise!
It is fabulous to meet you all -- you are an amazing grandmother! It sounds like your family is going to have a wonderful time. Thank you for the information. This weekend I will compile everyone's information and send out the 'first draft' of our fish extender :fish:information for all to see. I had to make a switcharoo this week as, unfortunately, my parents are unable to join us this year but we added in my son's best friend, so I had to change staterooms. But it is all figured out now and I will send a compiled list this weekend. It sounds like we have some really fun families sailing with us and I am anxious to here all of the 'must dos.' We did a lot last year on the cruise but I am hoping to try some more new things this time, too!

We are six months from the cruise but I am counting down the days. I bet we all feel that way -- so anxious for vacation to begin. We live on Lake Erie in Pennsylvania and typically get well over 100 inches of snow but this year has been mild! I am praying the mild weather continues. Every so often I visit the Port Canaveral website (webcam) to see the ships sailing out. It gets me excited!

Well, I will be in touch again soon.

Thank you for your lovely warm welcome - I really do appreciate it. It's a lovely feeling to be chatting to people the other side of the Ocean knowing we're going to be on the same ship in a few short weeks. I hope I might get the chance to meet some of you in person to say Hi. If I meet you Alyson, I'll be treating you to a cocktail!
We are in the following cabins:

Cabin 8646

Sonia (Me!) - Minnie Mouse
Tony (DH) - Monsters Inc
Joe (18) - Stitch/Mickey/ Monster's Inc

Cabin 8643

Megan (16) - Tangled/Stitch/ Once upon a time(Particularly Killian/Hook!)
Elizabeth (16) - Tangled/ Mulan
James (10) - Zootopia/Stitch/Captain Jack Sparrow

Just to say that if anyone wanted to gift candy to our children, please note both Elizabeth and Megan are allergic to nuts (all types). They aren't extremely sensitive (so Ok if made in a factory which processes nuts etc) but can't have anything with nuts actually in them.

Can't wait to see who is in our group so we can start to think of gift ideas!

Am going to have lots of questions about the cruise, can do our online check in thingy on the 25th so that will be the first hurdle!

Hi Paula,

I received a message but it only had my messages in it. I hope you are interested in joining the fish extender game :fish:on the Disney Dream when we sail August 8 - 12! Or, you are welcome to use this thread to ask questions, share your experiences or talk about the cruise and/or Disney! It is for everyone.

If you are interested in joining the game I just need the following information:
Names of family members who wish to 'play'
Ages (adult ages are optional :))
Favorite characters for each person
Any food allergies (sometimes people put snacks and treats into the fish extender sacks!)

If you have read through the thread above you probably know how it works. The game is like a 'Secret Santa' game on board. Let me know if you would like to join and/or need more information.

Thanks so much!

Hi All! Unfortunately, there has been a change in my daughter's college schedule and she now has to take a summer course so we are canceling the cruise for August 8th as it conflicts. So sad we won't be able to have fun with all of you. The good news is that at least we will still be able to do our trip to WDW for the 4 nights after we were to get back from the cruise so at least I still get my Disney magic a little bit!!!

Oh no! Sandi, I am so bummed! But school is definitely more important and kudos to your daughter for her diligence. You will be missed but thank you for letting me know. Have a wonderful summer and a super time at WDW.

Hello my Disney Dream friends! I certainly don't want to wish my summer away...but our vacation is fast approaching! There are just a couple of edits to our fish extender list so I wanted to send a revised list. Sandisw and her daughter are no longer cruising with us because of a conflict and while we will miss them we have a very excited and fun family from the UK joining us! Welcome Sonia and family (you are now in Group #2)!

Please go over the list again paying particular attention to your group. We have three groups:
Group 1 - Dream Catchers
Group 2 - Dream Weavers
Group 3 - Day Dreamers

We will add a group 4 if there is enough interest from new families. You only need to create/purchase gifts for families in your group. This way the game doesn't get too crazy. I think I have mentioned that last year I brought an extra suitcase just for my gifts! I still need a little bit of information from some of you:
TotesByDN - Cabin number is needed
Texasbeth - The Cabin number for your second cabin is needed
rgutland - Cabin number is needed.
(I apologize if you sent me this information and it was an oversight on my part. And if you are no longer participating that is fine, too. Just let me know.)

Also, just a few bits of extra information
  • We will begin our game/exchange on Tuesday, August 9 through Thursday, August 11. This gives everyone some time on Monday to unpack, find your fish extender and gifts so you are ready to exchange on Tuesday. We depart from the ship so early on Friday, June 12 that we are unable to exchange on that morning.
  • The game is very similar to a Secret Santa game. Small gifts are left in the pockets of the fish extender for families to find and enjoy. Some people made their gifts and some people bought them -- it is completely up to you! It is so much fun to return to the room and find these delightful treats!
  • You may choose to give individual gifts or a group/family gift. It is up to you. And, you do not necessarily need to use the person's favorite character in your gift but it sometimes helps to know who it is!
  • Please read through your list to see if anyone has an allergy. In Group #2 Elizabeth and Megan are allergic to nuts. If anyone else has an allergy that I do not have noted, please let me know ASAP.
  • My cabin number is 9564 and I will have extra lists with me in case you forget yours. Just leave me a message on the white board on our cabin door and I will bring one to you!
  • Above all, have fun! Closer to the trip I will suggest a meet up to see if any families would like to meet up for a quick hello on board! Typically this is done on the Monday of our trip and is optional!

Have I missed anything? Enjoy your Monday -- have a Disney day!

Omg I'm like a bajillion years behind lol. I'm sorry

We are a GTY reservation so I'm not sure when I'll know our cabin # but I'll keep you posted!

I'm 24 (technically, but seriously I'm just a big kid lol) & my favorite characters are Belle & Minnie, my Groom-to-be Jamison (26, peanut & tree nut allergy) loves Stitch & Chip & Dale

Also we're big into pin trading (just for fun though, not serious or big spending traders) if anyone wants to make arrangements to meet up and trade pins one day lol.

Any other info needed from me at this time?

Hey Danielle!
It is SO good to hear from you. I was worried that will all of the wedding planning we might lose your participation in our game! I am thrilled that you are still going to play. Yay! I can imagine this is a crazy-busy time for you...but so exciting!

Just keep me posted about your Cabin number to make sure your gifts find you and Jamison and I will add your favorite characters to your information. Thank you SO much for responding.

I will include the information about pin trading, too.

Alyson :earsgirl:

THANK YOU Alyson!!! You've gone way above & beyond to help all of us have an extra-magical cruise! Ashton (my niece turning 10) is so excited about the gift she is making and loves the name Day Dreamer for our group! :) We have our countdown going! I appreciate you helping make this FE painless and so organized for us!
