Can someone explain to me what a Disney Dollar is?

I have seen the term used here on the DISboards, but I don't know what a Disney Dollar is.

Disney Dollars are currency printed by Disney and interchangeable with US currency at Disney Stores and theme parks. They come in $1, $5 and $10 denominations.

Many people here at DIS buy Disney Dollars as a sort of forced savings plan. Throughout the year, they buy Disney Dollars and put them away for the trip. They also may ask family to give them or their kids Disney Dollars for birthday or holiday gifts. Personally, I don't think its necessarily the best way to go for a couple of reasons, but it seems to work for some folks.

Thanks for the explanation Steve.

I guess they would be good for people who know that they are poor savers, who have a tendency to spend what they save or who just want the security of knowing it is sitting there waiting for them.

I think that's pretty much the case. This way, they can't spend the money elsewhere as only Disney accepts Disney Dollars.

Never assume anything. Personally, I'm a great saver but Disney Dollars are still a great way collect spending money for our trip. We roll coins and collect singles $1 that would otherwise go for nonsense and we take them to the Disney Store. All extra money goes toward the purchase of Disney Dollars. In a couple of months I've bought $500 worth. If, by the time of our trip, we havn't collected enough DDs then we simply use other funds once their spent. If, on the other hand, we have more DDs then we need, we exchange them back into US currency ($ for $) at WDW.

Going to the Disney store on occasion lends to the excitement and anticipation for the trip.

Unfortunately for me there is no Disney Store to go and visit to fuel the excitement, not that I need any help anyways

So if you don't use the Dollars then you can convert them back to cash? That is helpful then just in case for some reason you don't get to use them all up.

I also save the coins that I get during the day and it is amazing how quickly they add up, isn't it. I also collect coins, so I look at them all before I roll them, so it takes twice as long to do it.

I am going to use these for the first time precisely because my sons are such poor savers. It's a long way to hold onto $20 from Christmas to April when you are 10! And Mom-and-Dad will have $20 less they have to fork over. So - a cool idea for kids is my take on them.

They make good christmas gifts. My neices are going to WDW in Feb so I will be getting them some for Christmas.

yes - you can convert them back to cash at the parks - or spend them at the Disney store or in the Disney Catalog.

We did them for several reasons:

1. designated savings amount for spending money on souveniers
so we don't go "overbudget" without realizing it.

2. designated spending amount for the kids - they each have an envelope of Disney Dollars that are theirs - they know who has which one - and they know that once they are gone, that's it - no more stuff! (food aside, of course)

3. great birthday presents for the kids - this way we're not breaking our personal budget on shirts, hats, etc. for the girls

4. wedding presents - several people have asked if we'd like them as a wedding gift, and I thought it was very sweet. We might even use them for a nice dessert or resort dinner :)

5. they're FUN! :) We found the 100 years ones with Snow White on them in the beginning - now you can't buy them and SKy knows hers are the Snow White ones :)

Does anyone know if you can use them at DLP?

TIA
