disney dollars

I just bought some today at the gift shop in toon town, I was excited too because they were the 2005 anniversary ones.

Disney dollars are great. I get a few each time I go to the park. I always get mine at city hall/guest relations on Main Street.

Probably a dumb question but is it basically a 1:1 currency exchange value? Or does one Disney dollar cost five bucks and you are buying a souvenir? Thinking maybe I'd stock up on some on our next trip to save for the kids future spending money at Disney.

They are 1:1 you spend a $1 and you get $1. I have also been told that they are destroyed once they are spent. Some people keep them as a collectors item as they are dated like real currency. I was surprised to get a full lot on Sunday of the 50th anniversary ones!

love Disney Dollars!! You can also buy them at the Disney hotels, and I saw someone buying them at the DTD store, at the cashier where the purchases and expensive collectibles are.

My question is..... I completely forgot to get some last month, duh.... anyone know of a way to order/buy them online or over the phone someplace? Thanks!!

Thanks for the scoop. I would also love to get my hands on some before our trip. Thinking now more as a collectible. Or maybe to just grab an image from online to make each kid a money holder for spending money. Sounds like there are different design by years. Excited to go search to find more out. :-)

Hmm we just bought some in DD in the World Of Disney as part of a reward system for our DD. Ours have dumbo and are $1 denomination. They did not have them at the register but the wonderful CM went and found some for me. You can also order them online here:https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/faq/parks/ordering-disney-dollars/.

$15 for shipping is pretty steep. I know I have bought them at the Disney store at my local mall, not sure if you have one close enough.

Yeah, I don't think id pay for shipping. I had asked awhile ago at our Disney store but apparently they stopped selling them in Disney stores awhile back. Oh well, will grab at Disney and maybe do a fairy godmailer once there as well :-)

Well speaking for me only, I want them because they are adorable! If using as currency it's a fun way to pay for stuff. I know waaaaay back when people used to use as a way to mark that money as Disney-only money. And it appears there are different designs by year (or themed promotion?), so that makes them collectible.

I suppose it's similar to paying 51 cents for a squished penny with a Disney design on it. But while the squished pennies aren't usable as money, the Disney dollars are spendable.

We use them as part of DD incentive for behavior and chores. She earns a Disney dollar when she has a week with good behavior (she earns an allowance regular dollar for each week with all chores done). The dollars are a great visual cue for what she has earned. Bad behavior loses the dollars as well and it impacts greater to physically take away the dollar. Then just before a trip we count up her dollars earned and add them to a gift card for her to actually use within the parks.

I'm confused...what exactly is the point of "Disney Dollars?"

It's a novelty. As bektasmic said, it's simply a fun way to pay for things in the park.....Disneyland's unique currency.

I think a couple of decades ago, they were even more prevalent (not as many debit / credit card holders) & it was fun for visitors to use this wacky mony.

Now most people just get them as souvenirs or collectables, but you can still use them for currency in the parks.

Oh my gosh, they have Dumbo ones!!! Ok, I'm not sure if this is allowed, if not, please delete and I'm sorry, and I don't mean to hijack this thread, sorry about that too, but I have a serious favor of someone. My dd7 is a major and I mean major Dumbo fan. When we see Dumbo (which as most of you probably know is rare), we get excited and we buy it. Dumbo has been her favorite since her first visit at 2. We were just there last month, and they had the mountains theme dollars, no Dumbo. If someone could get me a couple, or even just one, I'd be so grateful, I'll send you the money, or we can exchange and I'll send you some macadamia nut chocolates from Hawaii.

Sorry if this isn't allowed, it's just this would tickle her heart to have a dumbo dollar like you have no idea.

They come in different denominations $1 for $1 Disney Dollar / $5 for a $5 Disney Dollar etc.

For the other poster ClaraOswald, Disney Dollars are bill money with characters on them that you can spend anywhere in the parks or within the Disneyland resort. You treat them like real cash. I don't ever use mine. I collect them and also scrapbook them. I only ever get the $1.00 ones but lots of fun. The last one I got was a Pirates of the Caribbean.
