Where can you get these? Why would you want them? and What are they good for?
Thanks for all replies!;)

You can get them at Disney stores or at WDW. They are like cash in that 1 Disney "dollar" equals $1 US -- with one catch -- only at DISNEY. Outside Disney, Disney dollars are useless.

They are basically fun to have and use at WDW or DL. Some places give refunds in Disney dollars only. It's just a fun type of currency to use in "the world."

My DW and I went to listen to a time-share spiel on year just to get $250 Disney dollars. We told the salesman right off that's the only reason we were there and we'd listen for exactly 1.5 hours. Then we demanded our "money." It was great 'cause that paid for a couple of very nice dinners at WDW!

It help us save for our trip. We usually buy about 50.00 at a time,
we start about 6 months ahead of time. Plus I earn them on certain reward programs. It just helps us budget our trip.

The best thing about Disney $$ (IMHO) is that you can't spend them till you get there, but once you're there you can spend them almost anywhere.

I like to save all of my change (and my hubby's change, and any $ found in the laundry, etc.) in a jar then cash it all in and buy Disney $$ with it. This helps me save money towards any future trips to WDW, and I know I can't spend it until I get there, even if I'm short of funds for something else. If I had regular cash hanging around (Yeah, like that would ever happen!) it would be too tempting for me to dip into it from time to time.

Once your at the parks you can use the Disney $$ for meals at Disney restaurants, towards your hotel bill at Disney resorts, for snacks at the parks, for souvenirs, or you name it.

This is one of the best ways for me to save for my trip. Don't know if it works as good for anyone else, but it works for me!!

Hope this helps.

OMG lolatuck I'm in the same boat as you!!! I cannot put money in a envelope without dipping in. About 2-1/2 months ago I had about $90 in a my envelope and it is now down to $15 in which I just put $5 in the other day! I used the money for my DD's field trip souviners, book club at school, teachers gift for year end. Any time I didn't have enough in my wallet I dipped! For my b-day I asked my MIL for Disney Dollars. Then with the money from my Mom I went to the store and bought them. I even got $20 from my DH to help fatten back up my stash that I also got DD with. At least I'm creeping back up now, but I'm gonna keep buying the DD so I do have extra spending for my October trip. This is gonna be a lean one because I cannot wait until next October when we originally planned our next trip. So evereything I put aside is gonna help it not be so tight.

Just a note- You cannot use them at Swan & Dolphin.

I don't know about anywhere in Downtown Disney? Anyone?

#1 reason for Disney Dollars - DISNEY CHILDREN!

My daughter recently celebratred her 8th birthday and a few family members gave her Disney Dollars for her trip! Also when I go buy 'stuff' at the D store I buy extra Disney Dollars to ad to her stash! It will be great for her to see where her 'money' goes and how fast!

I use the Disney $'s for the children, I give them each a set amount of Disney Dollars to spend at WDW. This way it is up to them what they want to buy and there is no crying when it is gone they have learned to budget their $$ at Disney.
It's a great idea for kids they can buy what they want and they know how much they have to spend before we get there.

Asking for Disney Dollars as gifts instead of something else works really well since they can't be spend anywhere but Disney or the Disney store. The only glitch is if there isn't a Disney Store "convenient" for your gift givers. Then you can get stuck with stupid things like sweaters. :)

Some people buy them as a 'forced' savings mode, which works if you're truly not disciplined to stash the money away in a bank account which earns interest. In this low interest era, the interest really isn't much, but its still better than nothing.

We stash our extra money we bring in doing hockey scorekeeping in our 'internet' bank account, where we get something like 3% interest.

Looking at it another way, buying Disney Dollars way in advance is, in effect, giving Disney an interest free loan in order to pay for items in the future at future prices. But they do make great 'excitement' builders for the kids (of all ages).

(who just bought $120.00 in D$ 6 months in advance)

I just love using them! I'm a goof and think it's so much fun to buy a soda or whatever with Disney Dollars (which are so pretty and festive) instead of 'real' (how boring and bland!) cash. Just another fun way add to your trip. I also give my daughters Disney Dollars as presents and bonuses. She keeps them in her pressed penny book for when we go next!

I LOVE DISNEY DOLLARS!!!! I have a change jar that I use to save up all the change and when my DH leaves loose change on ths dresser, it somehow disappears and he can not find it in the morning:rolleyes:

I give my three kids a set amount of money also and last year we gave them each $100.00. Believe me that goes FAST!!! My then 9 year old was spending it on mostly pins. My then 5 year old was copying his brother, but also bought some Buzz lightyear toys. Yet my youngest, who was 4 and a girl, saved her money. (she must take after her mother). She saw a snow white costume in the first park we went to and the first store we went into on our first day and said she wanted the WHOLE costume. It was a dress, wig, gloves, shoes, the whole works. It came to around $130.00. I told her that since it was our first day that she needed to wait for awhile into the week, because she will "probably" find other thinsg she would want to spend her money on. Well she is EXACTLY like me. She does not want for much and is VERY picky and hence she held out the WHOLE week without spending ANY of her money.

Therefore we went BACK to the first park on our last day and she bought the costume with her money and she used up all of her $100.00 and we,of course, picked in the rest for the $30.00 over.
:smooth:

They all loved their OWN money and spending it. DH and I also bought a couple things for them and they did not have to spend their money on food or drinks.

We also cannot seem to keep cash in the house because of all the "little" things that come up with the kids and their activities, hence we RUN to the Disney store to buy disney dollars when the "piggy bank" has gotten up to at least $50.00.

I also do a lot of rewards on the computer and turn those into webcertificates and use the webcertificate credit card and get disney dollars with that also.

We will be surprising our kids next year. They know we are going but not when. We plan on having a flight out to Orlando on the night of the last day of school next June. They will not be told and we will be surprised when we are in a rental van on the way to the airport!!!! Oh I can not wait!!!:bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc :smooth:

You can buy Disney Dollars at the Disney Store, and you can use them there too!!!!!!!

I buy them by check before I go to WDW or DL, as I don't tap MAC with my checking account. While it is the same as cash, I don't think I would be as upset if it was stolen (I guess b/c the thief would have a hard time using it!). A friend of mine used to get D$ on birthdays and holidays. She collects WDCC and cels, so she can always use the D$.

when shopping at WDW or DL, I usually use this money for fast meals, and sovie shopping. My big purchases always get charged :( as they usually get shipped home.

Enjoy your trip!

For those of you who don't frequent the northeast US, 'tapping MAC' is what everyone else calls going to an ATM for money.

Sadly, the concept of tapping MAC will be going away as the corporate illegitimate children are going to change the name to something stupid like the STAR system. So instead of being able to tap MAC while in WDW, you'll have to do something like 'smack a star'.

Ok, slightly off topic but I'm very annoyed with this and I know people look at me wierd when I forget to ask for an ATM while traveling and ask for a MAC machine, so I thought I'd explain and vent at the same time. :(
