We are dis veterans here, but I almost feel embarrassed to ask-what is the deal with the disney dollars? Where do you get them? I've heard about them over the years, but never seen them or used any. Are these just collected or can they be used like you would a gift card or something along that line? :confused3

These work just like cash and are accepted pretty much everywhere on Disney property.

The two easiest places to get them are any Disney Store and at the park. They come in denominations of $1, $5, $10 and $20 (I don't think they go any higher). You use them just like cash and you get change back in US currencey. There are different Disney related pictures on the bills. I just got $1 bills with Pirates of the Caribbean on them. That was at the visitors center in MK about 3 weeks ago.

I am so glad you asked this question. My nephew is going to Disney in two weeks and I wanted to give him Disney $ so he could use it for something he really likes.

For Christmas two years ago someone gave us Disney $ and we used it on our last trip in Jan. It was great. It is just like cash and just like Kies99 said they give you the change in US currencey.

I'm so glad to hear you can get it at the Disney Store. I'm going to rush over there today!!!!!!

Thanks!!

Just ask at the register. My store looked like a bank vault when I asked. They opened a locked door behind the counter and had STACKS of Disney Dollars. Some of the denominations had different pictures. For example some $5's might have princesses and other might have Donald Duck.

Hi all!

This is my first post WOO HOO!!

Anyway, I have two boys, and every year for their bdays and holidays - they get Disney dollars - great stocking stuffers, easter basket fillers, etc. So, usually the kids have more spending $$ than me!! Anyway, Disney Store (as well as WDW) sells the gift cards also.. So, last year, after the Bdays, I went to Disney Store to exchange my dollars for a gift card - it was MUCH easier to keep track of than the 'wad of cash'... Every time you use the card, the new balance prints out on your receipt!

The kids love it, they feel like they have a charge card - of course, they don't get to hold the card, if they lose it - that's it, ya know!!?

Thanks for the info! I think I will hit our local Disney store and get some just for the novelty of it. DS and DD normally are given gift cards for their spending money at Disney, but next trip I will give them a little of each and see what they like better.

I wanted to get Disney dollars for my DD for our upcoming trip. I thought she would enjoy having her own spending money at the parks. Anyway, I went to the local Disney Store to get them and the cashier rang them up like any other purchase. It hadn't occurred to me that they might do this and it seems odd to me, now when we do make a purchase at the parks we will be paying sales tax on the same money twice? Doesn't seem right :confused3

You paid sales tax on them? I've gotten them in the past and never paid sales tax. It's just like a gift card, you only pay the sales tax when you buy the goods, not when buying the gift card or disney dollars.

You should not have been charged tax on the Disney dollars - it is basically money for money - they have to ring them up to show they were sold, but not taxed...

Definitely check that receipt - there is no tax charged on Disney $...I purchased Disney $ before our last 2 trips and DD (7 y/o on those trips) loved using them! It also helped her decide if she really wanted something badly enough to spend her own money on it...when I told her I would buy something for her, she was so excited that she could save her money for something else. She really started to learn that buying every single cute thing she saw was not a good idea and made purchases wisely. I think they're a great idea for kids.

They rang them up wrong. You should not have paid sales tax on the Disney Dollars. It's like buying a gift card. If you have the receipt still, take them right back and get them to correct it.

Thanks, I will dig around and see if I still have the receipt. I'm sure I do since it says Disney on it and I am a sick woman :rotfl2:

I didn't think that seemed right. I wasn't going to get anymore Disney $ if that was the case but perhaps I will reconsider. hmmm, I wonder if there is any new merchandise we need while I'm at the Disney store??? :rolleyes1

We went to the Disney store on mothers day just so we could 'purchase' Disney dollars. We decided to get the $1 bills this time. Someone dais in an earlier post about looking like a bank.... I too saw this, they have then locked up and you have to have the manager get them out. The bills we got had Cinderella's Castle on. The girls are thrilled, they have their own money. Also big incentives for just about everything. They earn them for their trip. (I bought a couple extra just to use in the scrap books.

Me:tinker: DH :cool2: DD:butterfly DD princess: DS

They sound great. I thought they stopped selling them but I guess not. I will have to get some for the grand kids. They are going with us in March and I will have them help around the house to earn money to spend.

We got the 'classic' Disney Dollars last time we went in 1998, I've been asking my Dad to get them framed for years now so we can have them on display in our house as we'll never use them, they're too special to us!

I'm going to try pick up some new designs when I'm over there next year, then I promise, if my Dad doesn't frame them, then I will! :thumbsup2

Disney makes tons of money on Disney Dollars, because just about everyone who buys them wants to keep at least one or two for a souvenir or to put in a scrapbook (including me)! It would be interesting to know how much profit Disney makes off those pretty little pieces of paper. ;)

I LOVE Disney $'s for the kids. I give them out through-out the year for things like doing well in school and for keeping their rooms clean. The kids really enjoy having their own money and spending it the way they want to without having to ask mom.:goodvibes

GReat idea! I think I will try that with my DD11--she doesn't seem too impressed with real money, but maybe the novelty of Disney $'s will appeal to her.
