Disney Dollars...sold out 'company wide'?

Was planning on buying some for my DD but our local one closed. Surprised me because it always seemed busy.

Back on May 1st, the Disney company re-acquired The Disney Store business from The Children's Place because TCP filed for bankruptcy. Disney only opted to buy back 2/3 of the stores, so rather than have the remaining 98 stores under other ownership, those stores were sold to a liquidator and closed. The decision was based on how well the stores were meeting their goals which sadly is not always related to how busy they appear. I'm sorry your local store was one that closed down. As some previous posters mentioned, Disney Dollars can be bought in the parks, and Gift Cards can also be purchased in the parks and online.

Yes, as the PP said, it was done May 1st. There were many threads here on the Dis regarding the buy back.
