Disney dollars on ebay

I saw some auctions on ebay of people selling Disney dollars. Has anyone ever purchased DD's on ebay? Do they ever expire? I don't have a Disney store near me and thought this might be one way for me to get some. Something about it makes me nervous, though.

I think it's weird that someone would sell them on ebay - but you can only get cash back on them if you have your receipt so that may be why they are selling them there. However I don't think I would buy any on there. They don't ever expire so you don't have to worry about that. But I think I would try a trusted friend or relative who can get them for you first.

I'm curious as to whether they are being offered as an auction of as a fixed price. WDWorBust probably hit it right that they probably no longer have the receipt and therefore can't return them to TDS.

I've also seen them on ebay, but I think they're from earlier years being sold more as collector's items

They've got quite a few different editions available. Looks like the value is definitely in the eye of the collector when you see some of the prices.

I have over half of the set (87-03) I only collect the 1 dollar- its fun to see how they change over the years


Now if anyone has a 87/88/89/91 and I think 96 they'd love to pass on...

I have sold Disney Dollars on ebay. People do collect them. The bills change periodically and various commemorative ones have been printed. It isn't unusual for me to sell an older $1 bill for about $4 at auction.

As for buying them to use, obviously you wouldn't want to pay more than face value plus postage (and even then it really doesn't make sense). Unless you can pick them up for less than face value, I would pass.

Out of curiosity, I just took a look at the DD auctions and they definitely do seem to be marketed as collector's items. I wouldn't think this is a good way to acquire them for spending, though, since they seem to selling for more than face value once you factor in shipping.

I was thinking I'd read on these boards that DDs could be bought via mail order directly from Disney. I think that would be the route I took it I were not close enough to a TDS to buy them directly. I would be very surprised if you weren't able to find someone on these boards who could tell you more about a direct purchase by mail.

I stumbled across a couple auctions for $16 worth of DDs (one of each denomination--$1,$5 & $10). The auctions started at $.99 with $1.75 for s&h. I figured what the heck and placed $5.00 bids on each of them. They're up to $6.50 for each auction now, but there's still 5 or 6 days left on the auction. If the auction price goes over $14.25, it's not worth it to me. I'll watch, just to see what happens!

Disneyland_Emily, I'll have to see if I can even find them and see what years I have, I know we probably bought them when toontown opened, for example. hmmm now where did we put them during our move??

Disney dollars are sold in Disney or at the Disney stores in the malls. They look like monopoly money but with disney characters on them. You can use them to purchase anything inside of Disney world. People will buy them ahead of time as a forced savings tactic because they can only be spent in Disney. They are a cute idea for kids to use to shop.
