What if they did as I mentioned, if there are rooms
Cancel the room only, book all 4 together
Then book the 2nd room, via MDE.
While calling on the phone may not work, I do not think MDE will stop it

This will work. Just book the second room online after you have added the friends to your FD BB.

I have two rooms reserved in July at AS Music which include the free dining plan. One member of our party can't go so now we're down to six. If I switch to a suite instead of two rooms will I lose my free dining? Are the suites eligible for the FDP?

IIRC, suites are generally not included in FD< however I would call and check. The thing about making changes is that there must be something left in the FD inventory to change to.
