Disney Studios must be running out of ideas for its live action features! (this is not an early April Fool's)

Disney Developing Live-Action Movie on Snow White’s Sister

March 31, 2016 | 11:35AM PT Variety

Continuing its trend of spinning animated classics into live-action movies, Disney is now developing a second installment of its first fully animated feature film, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.”

Sources confirmed to Variety that the studio is developing “Rose Red,” which follows Snow White’s sister. Disney will use a pitch by Evan Daugherty to polish the original draft by Justin Merz. The latter’s script has been around for some time, but Disney recently picked it up after Daugherty came to execs with an updated pitch on the story.

Rose Red is a character that appeared in “Grimms’ Fairy Tales” in an adventure that had no relation to the more well-known “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” fairy tale that inspired the classic Disney animated film.

I've said it before: Disney is probably buying every single script that includes their classic characters just so other studios don't do it first. They have announced live-action projects for the following 15 years, which in reality is not how big studios operate.

Is Disney that hard pressed for original ideas that they're making live-action movies for everything now? I can understand Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, and Cinderella, but Snow White's sister? Really?

I think they are just developing ideas to keep for the future. I don't think they will be doing every movie for sure.

Why so cynical? It sounds interesting to me. Disney is certainly not "out of ideas." o_O
That's fine if you think this sounds like a good idea, but I would much rather see Disney focus on completely original ideas for both their live-action and animated movie branches, instead of just remaking "everything".

Rose Red comes from the original Brother's Grim stories. This looks very interesting to me. I personally have enjoyed these live action movies. Keep them coming Disney!

It's always interesting to hear of movies that never were. Order of the Seven was put on halt back in 2012 after John Carter. I would rather them dust that off (albeit without Saoirse Ronan) than try and spin the whole "the story of the sister you never knew" angle.

it's also about copywrite you can only get something copywritten twice and almost all of the animated characters have exausted that so now you make live action films and boom there is another copywrite plus they make money as well. but that way the characters are controlled by disney until expiration

Copyright in the US is 70 years after the creators death. Copyright on the live action versions isn't transferable to the animated versions. And in the case of things like Snow White or Rose Red they could only ever have copyright over their versions of it since those characters predate Disney.

But Disney made their name on non-original ideas...

Snow White has a sister???

Ish?

There's a story Snow White and Rose Red that was collected by the Grimm Brothers, but as far as I know the Snow WHite in that is not the same Snow White as from the story Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, also collected in Grimm's Fairytales.

This certainly wouldn't be the first time the two stories were mashed together though.

Not for everything though, I want more movies like Wreck-It Ralph and Zootopia.

Well just in the next couple of years we have Moana and Coco. And if new adaptations are acceptable (they're not remakes) we also have The BFG and Gigantic.

At lot of this stuff we're hearing about that's "in development" is years away even if it happens.

In 1998, Congress changed the copyright for works created on or after January 1, 1978 to “life of the author plus 70 years,” and extended copyrights for corporate works to 95 years from the year of first publication, or 120 years from the year of creation, whichever expires first. This change extend the copyright for Mickey Mouse to 2023. This change in copyrights was initiated by the WDC. Disney now has about 7 years to convince Congress to extend copyrights again in order to protect Mickey and other Disney characters from entering the public domain.
