I think this is the slowest this thread has ever been. Everyone must be getting ready for Xmas.

BK vomited everywhere again this am. We're resting and going to decorate gingerbread cookies in a little while. I think the medicine may have upset her tummy as she hadn't vomited since Thurs am early.

Denise,
I sure hope you are all on the mend. How is the weather there this am. Is all the ice gone?

Yes, it melted away mostly on Thursday, although they are saying we may get some snow/ice tonight. It depends on if the rain stays to the South of us or not.

I am in Decatur/Huntsville Alabama and we would love to get some snow for Xmas, ice might even be nice. LOL but I doubt we will.

Well I am out of here to do some shopping.

We used to get snow every year in Athens. My grandmother is in Huntsville still. The TN Valley always seems to get a little once per year. Oh, and we were in H'ville for Thanksgiving!

I need a recipe to make a cute Christmas treat for preschoolers that is safe for a child with peanut allergies. Does anyone have a recipe or can you tell me which cookies, candy, etc. are peanut allergy safe? I'm trying to make something like reindeer, santas, snowmen, etc.

I'll check for you later today. ETA: I just called and was able to check without giving my Costco number. All the Disneyland Resort hotels are full, but he said most of the Good Neighbor Hotels were available for those dates. I've never been to DL so I have NO CLUE what that means! :rotfl:

Thanks so much for checking for me, Denise. I guess after talking to CRO for so many years, I should know to call back and ask someone else! :rotfl: The woman I spoke to yesterday was incredibly rude. Seems like the 1st day of our trip is the one that's sold out everywhere, but I thought just maybe...

Thanks again!!

Would good old sugar cookies work? If so, I have a pretty easy recipe. I've never used it to cut out shapes, but I'm sure it would work. Let me know.

Denise - sorry to hear that your crew is still so ill. I'm sure the weather doesn't help!

I've got a great and FUN candy for you. It was in Family Fun magazine last year. I'll look for the recipe. I make these for all holidays and just change the color of the kiss and M&M (ie white kiss with red candy for Valentine's). They are absolutely delicious, and a tradition around here now. The kids love helping make them.

Holiday Pretzel Treats

Salty pretzels combine with sweet chocolate for these fun treats that make a yummy gift few can resist. (In fact, you may want to make some extras for yourself!)

INGREDIENTS:
bullet_small.gif
Bite-size, waffle-shaped pretzels
bullet_small.gif
Hershey's Kiss or Hershey's Hug
bullet_small.gif
M&M's candy

1. Heat the oven to 170º. Set a number of bite-size, waffle-shaped pretzels (one for each treat) in a single layer on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper, then top each pretzel with an unwrapped Hershey's Kiss or Hershey's Hug.

2. Bake for 4 to 6 minutes (the white chocolate will melt more quickly), until the chocolates feel soft when touched with a wooden spoon. Remove the cookie sheet from the oven and quickly press an M&M's candy into the center of each Kiss.

3. Allow the treats to cool for a few minutes, then place them in the refrigerator to set, about 10 minutes. Place handfuls of the candies in clear plastic bags and tie on colorful ribbons.

Thank you! I'm sending DH to the store now. DS will love to help me make these!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news.... that recipe from Denise is great.... BUT.... Hershey kisses are made on the same machine as peanut candies and are not considered safe in the peanut allergy world. I know this first hand. My nephew spent fathers day 04 in pediatric intensive care because he had ONE small bite of a kiss. He found one that they were putting in goodie bags for the older nephew's birthday, took a small bite and was nearly dead less than a minute later. It took two eppie pens to keep him alive before the ambulance got there. He happens to be highly allergic, however, nobody with an allergy would be safe.

Oh, the packaging at that time was not labled as possibly containing peanuts. I don't know if that has changed. I thought you should know.

And they are soooo good! The kids love helping unwrap all those kisses. You can get really creative. I bake them (pretzel and kiss) until I notice the kiss getting glossy and starting to melt. Then I push the M&M on. If the kiss hasn't melted enough, it will come off the pretzel. Make sure to spray your baking pan first so you can "pop" them off after you refrigerate them. Once they've finished setting in the refrigerator, I just put them in big cookie tins with wax paper. They do not melt or get messy. I make them for snacks at school, bake sales, and the holidays. Everyone always loves them!

And during "that time" the sweet/salty is perfect.

Interesting and good to know. I've made them for classes with kids with Peanut allergies and never had any problems. You could always use any kind of chocolate ball/disk. It just needs to be the size of the pretzel or smaller.

Darn! Well DH hasn't left yet so I still have time to come up with something. Marti, do you know of candies or cookies that are safe? Or do you know a website I can check ingredients? I've searched but so far I haven't come up with anything.

He is the best! He can make anybody believe. He makes me cry every year. My children say he is real and everybody else is a helper. Do you know that he was hurt in a car wreck last year & that was why he had reduced hours last Christmas?
I didn't know that! I hope he's fully recovered. Can you imagine how the other driver must have felt to learn that he or she collided with Santa Claus? Naughty list, for sure!

I know this is my nephew, but they won't let him eat anything made by somebody else. He has the worst case of this allergy that anybody has ever seen. That being said, if Denise has made them and other peanut allergy kids have eaten them, then they are probably ok. They are REALLY good - you can't have just one! And if the children in your son's class are like Tommy, they will have their own approved sweet with them. There is no way my SIL will leave anything to chance, Tommy has to have only food made from their house and he knows it. Do you know for a fact that there is definately a peanut child in the class or is this a request district wide??

I've got a Christmas party to go to - I'll check back in later. I wish I were more helpful. I'm sorry!

Exactly - I know there must be approved chocolate out there, I just don't know which one is approved. I only know about the Hershey kisses because of my nephew. I don't know anybody else that has had the problem with them.

OK, this is what I'm going to do.

I can't find the mom's phone number (they just moved here) so I called my friend who has had the child over to her home before. She said he LOVES candy canes (and would want that more than what I'm making) so I'm going to dress his up like Rudolph or something. We'll still make our treats and I'll put them in ziploc bags. They do share time right before they leave so his teacher (I've already talked to her) will put the cookies in their bags as they're leaving. He won't be in contact with the bags or with any child who has eaten something with peanuts/traces of peanuts in it. Both the teacher and my friend have discussed his allergies with the mom and they both think this is fine.

He breaks out in hives so his allergy is not life threatening, but I don't want to endanger him in any way.

So...does anyone have ideas for dressing up a candy cane?

I posted before I read this. This is a new child in our class and he breaks out in hives if he eats peanuts or comes in contact with peanuts.
