Disney Day of Service

i signed up for my family of 4 adults to work at a jewish adult care center they called me back today and the lady told me she didn't feel my family would be right for the center! no we are not jewish and were not asked if we were i felt really bad maybe we can just donate blood or something:confused3

Huh? I almost signed up for that one. What was that based on?

i have no idea why all she asked was my name than i told her it would be 4 adults she was alittle rude stating we all had to give 8 hours or she would not sign for us and i said no problem she than stated 2 hours each week i said fine than she said i really don't think this is the center for you and your family i have a 100 emails asking to volunteer i didn't know what to say i was dumb founded i thanked her for her time and hung up

I inquired about Project Linus in NJ. The coordinator I spoke with said the blankets (2 per person) had to be delivered in person. Anyone else get this information from Kyle??
Thanks

I live near a similar center (Jewish nursing home/assisted living) and I am Jewish (not that it should matter). When I went to volunteer (in my 20's), they turned me away as a weekly volunteer  :sad2:

I'll trade you, the only opportunities close by are looking for a plumber, someone to paint a bathroom, or dig window wells at a local church :rolleyes1 (not the "giving" I had in mind)

I volunteer with the fire department, 30+ hours a month. I think that stuff like that should count!

Well I have hit a snag, and here I was all signed up on January 1st with a confirmed date, time and even how to dress on the 2nd. I got an e-mail today saying that our family was no longer needed. We cleared the date and researched the organization (Angel Food Ministries) and were really excited about it. Not sure why but thought maybe they had too many for next month so I offered March or April but was told no. :confused3

I just contacted Project Linus by my parents. If they can bring them all that would work. They are going to Disney with us so we all could do it together, but we won't be home again for 6 months so to wait till then might not work. If that doesn't work I guess we wait and see what opens up in the next couple months.

I am feeling a little rejected right now, but we plan to go volunteer at a local soup kitchen on our own anyway. Someone should want our help.

Did anyone donig the Project Linus through the Nottingham NH site get info that says they have to make 2 per person? Or that you have to include a picture of the person working on it?:confused3 I have gotten 3 emails from them and it doesn't say that anywhere. We have already assembled our blankets ( 1 larger sized one per family member) We made them Sunday just before my 2 DD left for a trip before returning to college:confused:

I was told it was up to me. One larger blanket per family was fine, single or double layer works too. If you have young children all they have to do is help. I wasn't told I needed a picture or anything and it can be mailed. I am doing mine this coming weekend. I am going to do at leaset 1 per person, not sure I I will do double or single layer.

Sorry. I would be bummed.

Yes, I got the same info from Kyle. 2 blankets if fleece/no-sew, or 1 if crocheted, knitted, quilted, etc.

In-person delivery with all members of the party present.

Disgraceful....... if your interpretation is correct (which I am not doubting, just saying...) I truly HOPE that their Seniors are treated Better than she treated you. Personally I would have felt offended AND likely been just as "dumbfounded" as well, very nasty lady...maybe give her the benefit of the doubt and think she had a really bad day...since we're all trying to be "generous" here :confused3
Funny though, I heard back from a place I chose for my family (after 3 turn downs:sad2:) and was told....if you want to be warm inside and need to get to florida by March, we prob will not be able to help you...Help ME? I thought we were helping them...Anyway, he was very nice actually and we are visiting the sanctuary THIS weekend to check it out and I am so excited.... meanwhile, he has no idea what volunteerism is in my family, ;)
SO, I think many of these places are being swamped and maybe they feel everyone is "just out for a disney tix??" and annoyed...but they SHOULD be HAPPY people are helping out, IMHO. Not very disney like otherwise Maybe volunteers will get "hooked" WOoHoo...........

Sorry you went thru that!
I hope you find something else you will all enjoy and experience...Good Luck!!!

I signed us up for the "Valentines project" i emailed the coordinater asking for more details and here is what was said:

Hi Andrea,
I'm not sure how you found out about this event, but the detailed information is not confirmed yet.
We will be making packages for kids with valentinse treats, educatinal books that we will make,....
This will both be educational and a way to make everyone of the kids feel especial.

I will add you to our list to give you more detailed infofmation of the location and the time.

but on disney site it says a date and time and location...

do you think i should keep looking ?

We are doing the Porject Linus in Bayonne NJ (contact person is Liz). We were told that we could just mail them to their address & no specifics on the number of blankets that need to be done.

I haven't even heard from the coordinator in my area yet! Disney has already sent me two emails regarding the project.:confused3

Has anyone who ordered the 1/2 price fleece blanket kits from JoAnn's received notice that their kits have shipped? I've been waiting for several days now and my order still shows processing. I called them this morning and was told that they are shipping directly from the manufacturer so they can't give me any details on when my kits will ship until they contact the manufacturer. The customer service rep indicated he would contact the manufacturer and them email me with an update. I'm really anxious to work on the blankets and am probably just being impatient.......:upsidedow

I just got signed up for project Linus blanket day in Fort Worth Texas. Email says I have to spend at least 4 hours and if I cannot sew there will be other things to do.

I went to my local JoAnn's and they had ton's for 50% off. I ended up buying 2 and completed one lastight.

Do you have a local store?

I WANTED to do the Project Linus fleece blankets, me and my daughter (age 17). I got this email (NJ) :

"Hi Patricia,
Thank you for your email and interest in supporting this charity. At this time we are welcoming blanketmakers; those who knit, crochet or quilt."

Huh? This leaves us out! I was all set to make some fleece beauties. I even said I could help deliver them, they asked for that as well. Not sure why they do not want fleece blankets. I was going to buy some cute fabric, really do them up nice.

I also signed up for office work in Trenton, waiting for details.

I honestly think most people who are volunteering are doing it for more than just the Disney passes, but you know there are always a few who are only in it for what they can get out of it... and we're not talking about feel good rewards here.

I popped into my local JoAnn store yesterday and happened to overhear a couple of ladies trying to decide whether they could buy just one of the $9.99 no sew fleece kits and get 4 blankets out of it. Of course I have no idea if they were making the blankets for Project Linus or not... but seriously?! Those would be some VERY skimpy blankets. :confused3

I'm sure the Project Linus folks are getting so many offers that they just need a little time to regroup and reassess their needs. Chances are most of the blankets being donated through the Disney program are no sew fleece. They're inexpensive, quick, and easy to make. Not a bad thing by any means, I love fleece blankets. But maybe they can only accomodate so many all at once.

It's like Christmas time at the retirement center. ;)
In high school our madrigal group went to the local retirement center to perform and to hang out with the folks every month... except December. In December they had so many families/organizations wanting to come in, that we took the month off.

I bet many of the volunteer organizations just didn't expect the huge response they're getting and are feeling a bit overwhelmed.

Anyone know the details on the option of getting the FASTPASSES for AP holders or multi-day ticket folks? Which attractions? Do you get one per person per FP eligible ride or what?

Disney's FASTPASS® Special Exchange Cards for certain attractions for you and up to 5 additional members of your party. †

We did our day of service today. It was suppose to be 4 hours but it only ended up taking 1 1/2 hrs. and they said we will get credit for the day. We put together items for a school nutrition program. There were 9 of us in total and all were going thru the Disney program. One couple even drove all they way from NYC (it was in Philly)! The other two groups were all leaving in a few weeks so I hope they get their vouchers in time. We are not leaving until April so we should be fine.
