A lot of people have expressed that Christmas is too commercialized. That they don't think that unnecessary places should be open on Christmas Day -- that we are destroying the family by doing so. So many people "have" to work when they would rather be at home.

This is a Disney board and lots of people here love going to Disney; I know we do. And, we love going to Disney for Christmas.

However, all those Cast Members are forced to work on Christmas Day because we want to be there.

So, only for people that celebrate Christmas, do you support Disney World and Disneyland being closed on Christmas Day so that all those Cast Members can be home with their families? (This question does not include the actual resorts or the restaurants, only the parks.)

I think it should be an optional thing. The ones that do decide to work should be given some sort of perks, like triple holiday pay. The charge more for that time of year they surely can afford to pay more

I said no... for a couple of reasons.

Sooo many families travel to Disney parks for the Christmas/New Years holidays and may not e able to do so at other times of year.

And... I may celebrate Christmas, but there are a whole lot of people in the world who are not Christians.

Strictly my opinion and not intended to push my thoughts on anyone.

I guess my question is...if you say yes, why stop at just the parks? I'm sure the resort, DTD, and restaurant CMs want to be at home just as much as the park employees. So do you just close the entire WDW complex on December 24 and check out all the guests, then start checking them back in on December 26?

Not everyone celebrates Christmas and some of those that do do not celebrate CHRISTmas. What one deems unneccessary, may not be to someone else, so no I wouldn't suport forceful closure of places on Christmas Day.

It would never happen but yes I would support it. :thumbsup2

Everyone deserves to have the Holiday off.

I say no. When you choose to work for Disney World, you are made well aware that WDW is open 365 days/year. For the non-Christians, WDW is also open for Jewish high holidays (equivalent of Christmas with regards to importance in the Jewish religion) & other important religion's holidays. If CM's did not want to do that, they wouldn't choose to work for Disney.

Also, Disney is certainly not the only resort or vacation spot that is open for Christmas. What about every other hotel, resort, vacation spot? They are open for Christmas.

Everyone deserves to have the Holiday off.

Fire fighters, cops, doctors, nurses, military, and dispatchers, too? I've worked many holidays and I was married to a cop for many years. For me, it's just a day. A day that I can recreate any day of the year.

No, I don't think it should be closed. If someone has a real issue with working holidays, then they shouldn't take a job where it's understood they'll be working holidays. :confused3

I wouldn't be in favor of that.

WDW is too crowded at Christmas time but still, if I had to work on Christmas day, it'd be OK at WDW.

I could care less if anything is open on christmas, my work is closed for the 25 and 26. My DH is in the health profession, so he works alot of holidays, he will work again this year, as he did last, and for the next few years as well, then his turn will come to have it off for 2 years. We just do our best to make the most of it, but we have rarely had Christmas together in the years we have been together.

Please, no has a "right" to Christmas off. They have a right to chose the job that is compatible with their choices. As a RN I worked many a major holiday, if I didn't want to do that I could have chosen to work in a non hospital environment, at a much reduced salary.
Anyone choosing to work at WDW knows holidays is part of the package.

I think that if you are one to feel employees have the right to have Christmas off then you have the duty to stay home yourself for the holiday. Don't go out and increase the workload. If all the people who celebrate Christmas stayed home with family, the guest load would be lighter ( only non-Christmas folks) and the need for employees would be lower

I would support the parks being closed on Christmas Day.

It would be nice if the powers that be would allow their employees to be home with their families, instead of being open. But then they would lose out on a day's admission tickets, which obviously is more important to them.

I think if families were only going there for the day, pick another day.

If families are there for several days/or a week, couldn't they find something else to do on Christmas Day rather than go to the parks? Open gifts in your hotel room, go to the pool, or take a day trip and go sightseeing or spend the day at the beach. Tons of stuff to do in Florida, go exploring.

I appreciate when businesses give their employees the day off. It shows that they care more about their employees than the almighty dollar.

I can't really answer.

People choose to work for the companies they work for and some folks travel for the holidays whether by choice or by circumstance.

If they closed--no big deal. But I fail to see how a theme park being open on a holiday destroys family values.

They opted to work at a company that operates year round and isn't a "needed" thing on a holiday. So the employees are responsible for their own choices. No one held a gun to their head and said "you must be a CM at WDW".

Sometimes we must take responsiblity for our own family values and quit expecting business entities to do it for us.

If it is closed--no big deal. But I really do not see the need to make them close so that a family can have family values every December 25th. B/c what about the other 364 days of the year where people are working late nights or early mornings and weekends and missing out on their own family time so that millions can have a family vacation?

Folks can have family values regardless of their employers company status.

If working 9-5, M-F is essential to their family values, then they need to find a place to work that will accomodate that.

There is a flaw in your suggestion.

Housekeepers/Maids, custodians, maintenance workers, resort staff, lifeguards.....

Toll booth operates (for folks traveling to the beach), gas station attendants (b/c we know someone will need gas)....

Rental car companies--just in case a rental car breaks down or is wrecked....the renter would not be left high and dry and it would require getting assistance unless keeping them stranded on the highway is good for the family...

Are you suggesting that a theme park employee is more entitled to family time than any of those people?

While it is noble to want a hard working person to be home for the holiday--it is quite unreasonable given that not everyone celebrates the holiday.

I would support it (not that it would ever happen because they would lose too much money) but there are not enough non-Christians working there to sustain the parks for the day--then you would have to justify the hotel workers working, etc. It isn't just the park workers to consider. Now, Disney could make shifts as short as possible so people don't have to spend ALL day working.

In many of the places some of you are mentioning there is usually the opportunity to switch off with someone who doesn't celebrate Christmas. Or in the example of a firefighter or a nurse, it can be a life or death situation needing someone to work.

At WDW, I would assume the size of the place and the need for x# of CM's to be there for the large number of guests would make it impossible for anyone to switch out working the holiday. A theme park is not a necessity as hospital and emergency personnel would be.

I would fully support their closing for that day, just as many, many businesses do. And for the employees that are Jewish or any other religions that do not celebrate Christmas, they should be given the opportunity to be off on their holidays too. (many, many businesses do this also)
