Did anyone run the Castaway 5k this year yet - 2017? If so, could you please post a picture of the medal?

Lots of questions ??? :)

1 - If I run it with my husband, where do I leave my kids at that early in the morning? Do you leave the on the ship or on the beach? (Of course with the cast members)

2 - How long does it take for the race about?

3 - When your off the ship and done with the race, do you go directly to the beach? Or go back on the ship for your stuff and pick up kids?

4 - When leaving the ship to go to the race, can you bring your stuff with you and find a spot on the beach?

5 - What time is the breakfast start - is it early enough for you to grab something to eat before the race?

Thank you for all your advice, help and any ideas !!!

The medal is awesome :)
1. Leave kids on the ship
2. It took me 30 minutes-ish. Some people ran it in 23 minutes or so, others around an hour. That last 1K was tough in the humidity!
3. I went back on the ship, but others went right to the beach
4. You can bring stuff with you, and leave it in storage areas at the beginning of the race, not on the beach
5. Breakfast starts at 7 I believe, plenty of time before the race meet up begins around 8.

You can't see in the photo, but the ribbon is like @xiphoid76 's picture, but is red says Disney Cruise Line 2017
1.Your can drop your kids off at Scuttles Cove (Children's programing on the island) In the meeting for the 5k everybody needing to drop of kids leave first to allow extra time
2. I took 35 minutes stopping for water twice
3. I went directly to the beach, felt good
4. You can drop you stuff in a box (but not really time to go to the beach)
5. There is a continental breakfast thats starts early 6:30 or 7

We just ran it last week on the Wonder. The medal is the same new rubber style, the only difference is it now says 2017.

1. For children you bring them with you when you check in to run that morning. They started calling us to line up at about 8:20 and had families with children line up first so we could swing by Scuttles Cove to drop our children off before the race. The kid's club on the ship is not open for drop offs while you are at Castaway (they only have open house then).
2. All ashore for us was 8:30 and they had us positioned to be first of the ship. You walk to the start of the race so by the time we started it was about 8:45. They man the finish line until 10:00 am but if you finish later than that you can pick your medal up at one of the gift shops on the island (they tell you which one during the race briefing but I can't remember). It is a very flat, paved course and as long as you have a breezy day it is actually quite pleasant to run though not very scenic :)
3/4. We took a backpack with our bathing suits and beach things with us. They have a box where you can leave your things while you run. We simply changed in the restrooms when finished and headed straight to the beach to find a spot and then picked our son up from Scuttles Cove.
5. Cabanas will be open in plenty of time to grab something before the race. We ran in about 7:40 to grab a quick bite and some water before heading to Azure to check in.

I had a completely different experience this time (Magic 2/17/17) and I probably won't be doing it again. There were hundreds of people running the race on my cruise and they kept coming and coming that morning - so much so that "registration" took forever and we didn't even get off the ship until 8:45 am, after meeting in Fathoms at 8 am. Everyone was getting off the ship a good bit before the racers did and I didn't get back to the ship until close to 10 am. I had run it 2x in the past and it wasn't anything like this and I think it took up way too much of my day.

(PS, sorry I should have answered your questions but the earlier responses did, I was just giving my experience)

I prefer to eat after running. What is available on the island at that time for food?

nothing is available on the island until Cookies / II open for lunch. you can always grab a banana / apple or something to put in your things you take with you to eat, or head back to the ship since Cabanas is open. You might find a friendly cast member outside of Cookies where they set up a fruit cart for lunch be willing to give you an apple or banana too. They don't open the ice cream machines until lunch.

We ate breakfast at 7 in cabanas. We put kids in their swimsuits and coverups and packed a bag for the beach. We were told to meet in the theatre at 9am. They put people with kids in a separate group and let us out first, then we (very slowly) walked as a group to the starting line. You pass scuttles cove on the way and check the kids in there. While I checked the kids in, DH walked ahead and put our bag down to reserve a spot on the beach, which was already filling up a time this point since other people not running the 5k debarked probably close to an hour before we did. I met up with him on the path you the starting line. I finished the race in under 30mins, changed into my swimsuit in the bathroom and went pick up the kids from scuttles cove. By the time it was all said and done, it was around 10:45 before we were on the beach relaxing

I eat very light before I run as well. I asked that friendly CM for an apple outside of Cookies. They did not mind at all.

Too much time to return to the ship, we just bring what we want for the day with us.

Does anyone know if the nursery is open? My friends traveling with us will have a one year old, it would be nice if both parents could run.

Thank you for posting this. My husband sometimes runs and I was going to join him this year. I never have because I am a slow runner and I don't want to take up that much of my beach time (especially because we have a cabana this time). I'll try to ask the night before how many are signed up and what time it will start.

One of the activities CMs told us that they usually have around 300 sign up for the run. On our cruise 144 registered and only 114 showed up the morning of so I'm sure that helped our experience go so smoothly.

The nursery should be open onboard the ship as, unlike the Club/Lab, the nursery does not move to the island for the day. I don't know if it will open early, but I suggest you stop by earlier in the cruise and ask about an early drop-off to run the CC5K. I've read they will sometimes take the little ones on a "field trip" to the splash area on the pool deck on CC day due to so many people going to the beach.

Enjoy your cruise!

Has anyone ever had or heard of people who have had issues in bringing unregistered kids on the run? I know you can't register kids under 12, but my daughter, who is under 10, has no problem running 5K and would love to run it on Castaway.

We are thinking of letting our daughter run with me and then letting her have my bib and medal.

I don't think the CMs would let anyone without a numbered bib through the starting point.

I've never run the 5K and was planning on doing it on our cruise this month because this will probably be our last DCL for a long time. Not happy to hear that the registration numbers are around 300 people now. They really should cap the number of participants to make it run efficiently again. They were capable of putting the tickets for meet & greets online so they should be able to do it for the CC 5K.

They do ask that you register prior at guest services and I was given a ticket, though in disney (not rundisney though) fashion, they will let you sign up that morning. Depending on the ship and itinerary, numbers vary. The Eastern Carribbean doesn't arrive until later in the morning, so numbers are reduced. Less people on the Classics mean less runners. I think there were maybe 100 - 150 last March on my Wonder cruise. Hoping for the same on the Fantasy in two weeks.

it all depends on the ship and who is organizing it. I use a mobility scooter and have done the race twice before being one of the last ones to leave and just riding my scooter. I've had no issues until this past February. Was told at Guest Services that it was fine for me to participate but the baby in a stroller was a no. Once I got to the island (we were late because the nursery didn't open till 8:30am) i was told that it was dangerous for other runners to have the scooter. Needless to say my husband and I were really disappointed since we made sure at guest services. I could have slept in or not had to pay for nursery had I known ahead of time. A CM on the island also said that the day before she saw two people on a scooter participating along with parents with little ones in strollers.
