Disney Casino?????

Hi all-
Just saw this reply to the April Fools article on MiceAge:

"I almost choked on my blueberry muffin and Diet Coke when I saw your headline on gambling and Disney. The reason was during our November trip to Walt Disney World (WDW) my husband participated in one of the infamous Disney surveys. This one was to measure our response to Disney offering gambling at WDW.

I am not making this up, some idiot in their marketing department must really be thinking of doing [this]. I thought my husband was going to choke the poor woman taking the survey (I noticed other parents having the same reactions as they were being surveyed). We made it clear that if WDW ever does gambling we would never step foot in their parks again. "

Has anybody else had an inking that Disney is considering casino action in any of their parks or on cruise ships?

Someone mentioned in another thread that once Disney managed to unload the Ducks they would then be free to put a casino on their cruise ships. This poster seemed to think Disney would do this ASAP.

Has anybody else had an inking that Disney is considering casino action in any of their parks or on cruise ships?

I've heard of complaints that the Cruise ships don't have gambling and that they are considering adding a casino to the ships.

There's a lot of competition for the offshore casino market. It doesn't surprise me that Disney would want to do that. They've actually hinted around for years that they wouldn't mind if Florida okayed casinos for the inland, which every year seems to get a bit closer to that goal. There is talk of letting in slot machines in some counties as a first step toward that. If it comes to Disney losing a share of market, they will most likely do it.

I wouldn't want to see them on the resort property. But on the cruise ship that would be a different story. I wouldn't mind that. go figure...

It makes no difference to me one way or another, but it could be interesting if Disney had gambling on a riverboat cruising the Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake.

On the other hand, Disney should consider how strong some people's opposition could be. Would they lose more money in the long run from families opting to abandon Disney altogether -- not just the parks but possibly merchandise and movies as well -- than any share of the gambling pie they may not be receiving currently? I'm sure that if Disney hears from enough people like the one quoted by the OP, Disney may hold off on the casino idea.

DCL is already going head-to-head with all the other cruise lines that currently offer gambling. Does it appear that DCL is having a hard time booking their cruises ? Didn't think so. Regardless of what the liberal media try to force down our throats, there is still a huge market out there for good,wholesome family entertainment. Bottom line, DCL does not need casinos.

As for inland gaming - slot parlors and full fledge casinos - Disney had better tread very lightly in this area. For one, there is an "element" ( not refering to the Car 3 crowd ) that always follows gambling. Disney does not want this element infesting WDW.

I love casino's and like to hit them here at home from time to time. Having said that, I just don't envision casino's as being compatible with a WDW vacation. I have a hard enough time with their being a large movie theater on property. I mean for crying out loud you can go to a movie anytime at home. I guess I just view a Disney vacation with s different focus entirely.

It doesn't bother me that Disney has a large movie theatre on property. It's a good place to hang out during the hot days of summer, and nothing like a state of the art THX system. I've seen movies at local theatres that I've seen at AMC Pleasure Island and PI was a much better experience. Course I guess it depends on where you come from. We are from a small town, so it's definitely a step up.

I wouldn't see anything wrong with a casino at the Contemporary or Coronado Springs as these are convention centers and there a lot of convention attendees that wouldn't mind a bit more mature entertainment. You have to remember these are the kind of people that convention in Vegas, Atlantic City and other such havens. I wouldn't like to see slot machines in every resort, but I think in those two, it could be of value. Disney is a company of balance and it's not just a place for kids and families. So why not offer some other types of venues for those that want that? I hate thrill rides, but people like them, so I understand they're putting them in to provide that balance. To me, if I'm by myself and not with family, the whole wholesome thing gets a bit thin, despite my love for the Disney.

ShadowWind, while I'm happy to have someone else not totally eschew my belief that casinos are not inherently bad, I do disagree that WDW or DL would be a good place for them. I think they should be be left to remain what they have been, are and will be, forever. That said I have no problem with casinos on DCL, it seems natural and I would love for Disney to take LV by storm. I'm not sure they have enough imagineering left in them to pull off that task but I'd love to see it nonetheless.

Disney has tons of property in the LBV area. I don't see why they couldn't build a casino that is still in the general vicinity of WDW, yet separate from the parks and resorts. I mean, the nightlife at DTD doesn't tarnish Disney's image in any way. I can't see why a toss of the dice would. Plus, it would give those of us who aren't *quite* young enough to enjoy the club scene at PI something else to do come evening time, after the parks close. I think it would be a great thing -- especially if they managed to make some of it non-smoking (donning flame-retardant suit)!!

Hey, in Ca. last year the porn industry had over 5 billion in sales. Just look at the back streets in Vegas and A.C. The "sinergy" between gambling and porn is amazing. And what better place then DTD for pawn shops & massage parlors. How about a "We Buy Gold & Check Cashing" store in the lobbies of CR and CS.

Before you label me a prude or worse, let me tell you that I visit A.C. a dozen or so times a year. I visit the casinos, have several "loyalty" cards that earn perks for slot play, etc,etc. But to get into these beautifull casino resorts I walk past broken derelects who've lost everything and "vendors" selling every kind of vise your heart desires. I can't believe this element wouldn't be a part of Disney's casino scene.

I don't know about AC but LV isn't nearly as bad as you describe. Is there heartache and tradgedy? Sure...But I've seen grown men crying like a baby after exiting It's a Small World, so what's your point?

Disney could exploit Vegas like Miramax did Hollywood, DCL does the Cruise industry and WDW does 'family vacations'...They just need to keep it seperate. I mean no one wants to see a midnite review featuring Minnie, Daisy or Jessica Rabbit do they? Well... maybe Jessica Rabbit!

I would label you hyperbolic.

First, you make no connection between CA (with $5 billion in pornography sales) and AC and LV -- which detracts from your argument.

Aside from that omission, however, there exists a logical fallacy in your argument. There are plenty of cities in which pornography is rampant. According to your correlational spin, gambling should exist in such places, and yet it does not.

Take NYC, for example. Given the amount of pornography that exists per square foot in NYC, in fact, some people (not I) might argue that it is one of the scuzziest cities in existence and should be scorched from the face of the earth (what with all the synergy between the pornography and the massage parlors and the pawn shops and all).

And yet, NYC also offers some of the most extraordinary cultural, financial and intellectual opportunities this planet affords.

You see, my friend, you *can* have it both ways.

Disney and casinos could coexist harmoniously if only people might decrease their narrowmindedness a bit.

Casinos are lucrative money makers that many people enjoy.
Pornography is a lucrative industry that many people enjoy.
Ca. is the home of DL and all the Burbank suits so I used Ca as my point of reference.

NYC may have pornoplenty, but the city has done a great job of erradicating it from the major tourist sections of the city. It was bad for business.

Vegas tried several years ago to market itself as a family friendly destination. The casinos invested billions to try and lure mom,dad and the kids. They failed miserably. They scrapped the whole idea. What's their slogan now ? "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas". Hardly the image I want of central Florida.

Right ow Disney is unique. Two locations in the USA, 3000 miles apart. There is nothing unique about slot parlors and casinos. They are popping up quicker then Starbucks stores across the nation. Disney doesn't need to risk losing an extremely loyal fan base.
