After sending an email to Disney about the closing of the Gourmet Pantry, they finally called me yesterday. The Cast Member was very polite and informed me (in my own words) that yes, Gourmet Pantry had gone the way of the dodo. I told her it saddened me that the Pantry had closed as that was one place in Downtown Disney that we always made a special effort to stop at.

She said that the new place would be called (or is called) the Earl of Sandwich and it is owned by the same people who own Planet Hollywood. They are still going to have some pastries and candies and will now be selling made to order sandwiches. She thanked me for my concern and said that she had passed my email on to management.

While I didn't expect them to bring back the Gourmet Pantry just on my email, it was nice for someone to call and let me know that they had received my concerns.

"Earl of Sandwich"

I guess no one can ever claim Robert Earl suffers from a small ego.

I saw a programme about this company a few years back- believe it or not, but the guy is the real earl of sandwich (Orlando Montagu) and decided to capitalise on his name and set up a gourmet sandwich company. The programme was shown on BBC in the UK as part of a series called 'trouble at the top' (I think). Basically, he had set up the company and was having financial difficulties- one of his investors brought in Robert Earl from Planet Hollywood. Wow- I didn't realise the company was still up and running!

excerpt:

"... the Hon. Orlando Montagu, six times great-grandson of the 4th Earl of Sandwich, and second son of John Montagu, the current 11th Earl of Sandwich, moved into the London marketplace. He had an original idea and soon found two prominent partners - Robert Earl, founder of Hard Rock Café and Planet Hollywood, and Marco Pierre White, the youngest ever chef to be awarded three Michelin stars. Orlando had the name, the enthusiasm and the vision. His partners had vast experience of and enviable reputations in the international food scene. Their shared goal was to build a major, international and well-respected sandwich business.

The Earl of Sandwich company was launched in March 2001"
