My 6 yo DD has mild CP. She wears AFOs and is unable to climb steps un-aided. Our last trip went fine. Mischa was only 3, light to pick up and in a standard pushchair. (Ooops, I mean stroller :rotfl: ) This year however we will have our Mclaren Major and a 2 yo DD too. Back in 2004 I seem to remember that the buses all had steep steps. I can see this will cause our stress levels to rise! I been on the various links and see that there is now a new generation of low floor busses. If these are in use my DD should be ok to board herself leaving Me and Mum (Ooops, done it again.... Mom :rotfl2: ) to carry on the two strollers and our 2 yo aboard. We don't really want to use the bus lifts unless we have to as my DD appears to have no disAbility on first sight. My question? Anyone want to guess what approxamate percentage of busses are the newer low floor ones?

Thanks in advance. :thumbsup2

A lot depends on which routes they happen to be putting the older buses on.
During our last trip, about 1/2 of the time we ended up with the older buses and 1/2 of the time the newer buses with ramps.
But, from everything I know, more than 1/2 of the buses are the newer ramp buses. If you do end up with a ramp bus, you can wait for a different type of bus if that works better for you.

But, if it would work better for you to use the bus lifts, you should use them. If you have not seen it, there is a bus section in the disABILITIES FAQs thread near the top of this board.

Don't be afraid to use something you are entitled to like bus lifts just because the disability is invisble. What if the kid had one leg, would you say no to the lift? Just tell the driver that your kid needs the lift because of the brace. Every day they meet people with hidden disabilities and help them.

I have phobias, mental quirks, back and joint problems and some vision issues. i have learned that you have to use the system if it applies. Chin up and enjoy your trip. If you cannot lift the strollers the explain to the driver and he can let you use the lift then you can fold them once on board.
