Really your choice. I can tell you the autographs books are everywhere, if you want to wait until you arrive -in all the parks, at the resorts, at DTD, everywhere. I think they also have them at OIA, since Disney operates two stores at the airport.
As soon as we checked into our hotel (the Poly), I took my DD5 to the gift shop to buy her autograph book & let her pick out a special pen. She was so excited...I had made a big deal of how that would be the first thing we would do so she would be ready as soon as she stared seeing characters. You'll probably have a better selection once you get there, too.
There's a Disneyland outlet down the street from my house - they have autograph books for like $1!! However, they're not WDW ones ( But if any IS going to DL and doesn't want to buy one, I can hook you up!
I'm actually thinking about doing one of those gift baskets that you can have delivered to the room, the one with the mouse ears and the autograph book and the Mickey hands. Anyone done that before? But if I don't , I know one of our first shopping trips with be to get an autograph book and Pal Mickey!
The Mouse for less website has free printable journal and autograph pages for those who want to make their own- they're awfully cute! I plan to use the journal pages for DS8 and DD7 to prepare for the reports they will have to give at school since they are missing a week to go to WDW!
I purchased one from laughinplace.com to put in my 3 yo niece's easter basket. When she returns from her Disney vacation, i am going to sit down with her and some Disney stickers and put the character's sticker on their signature page. That way, even though she cannot read, she will know whose signature it is! Plus, I get to spend some extra time with her!
