Disney At Christmas?

My husband and I kicked around the idea today of going to Disney for Christmas next year. We typically go in the off season and I know that Christmas is the busiest time, anyone have experience having gone say in May and then at Christmas? I know it will obviously be very crowded but if you are early morning people and take breaks can you do this without regretting your choice? We'd do this in place of going in May... Thanks!

The benefits are: longer hours, more parades and fireworks and fairly pleasant weather. The downside is the crowds. If you are staying onsite and can take advantage of the morning EMH without tiring yourselves out then it can be fun. We went to the MK today and Wed without the benefit of resort guests, we moved the Nick hotel on Tues. Both days were great early, but packed beyond belief by noon. We still got so much done early.
HTH

Thanks for the information! We are often out of the parks by noon for a nap so maybe it wouldn't be as bad as we imagine it. Knowing it's more expensive I'd hate for us to be disappointed and not able to do the things we normally do!

It is a great time to visit, but the parks are packed! I would not consider a trip to WDW at Christmastime without TGM. ;)

We were just there 12/18-22 and I have never seen it so empty and we usually go in April or May(never over Easter). I mentioned to a CM about the small crowds and she said we were between busy weeks. We followed TGM & the UG and walked onto almost all rides. Our longest wait was 10 minutes and that was to get a FP for TSM. After seeing WDW at Christmas I would recommend that anyone who loves Disney has to see it at Christmas at least once. The parks are gorgeous, the special events like the CP & MVMCP are wonderful and the Osborne Lights are overwhelming! We also loved visiting all the resorts to see their decorations and the Epcot storytellers are not to be missed! Our trip was one if our very best and certainly our most memorable!
Go and have a magical time!

We went for the day on Dec 23rd to Epcot- which had Evening EMH. Early in the day we did lots- we did everything we were worried about by 11:30 am or had FPs for them later in the day. Then we walked around and took in some shows before going to the candlelight processional. Earky in the day it was easy by noon it was packed like crazy and just seemed to get more so into the evening but we waited the longest at Soarin and that was 20 minutes with a FP.

We went Chrismas week of 2004 and loved it! We got "lucky". It drizzled most days and was a bit chilly, so the longest we waited for a ride was 20 minutes. We didn't mind the rain, being from upstate NY, we're tough. ;) Disney was gorgeous at Christmas time! A truly magical experience.

That would be my advice, too. We used TGM last Christmas, and it was amazing how well it worked.

Hi all,

To the OP (or anyone else contemplating at WDW @ Xmas trip), I would recomend reading the TR written by my DW on this thread: Xmas '08 Report. We had a great time, and practically no wait for anything we wanted to get done. If you know what you're doing, it can be just as painless as any other busy day at WDW, just a bit more crowded. We have previously went on New Year's Eve, and got MUCH less done, and we were at MK much longer on the 12/31 day than the 12/25 day.

The NYE trip might have been better had DW & I knew what we know now about going to WDW in high crowd times, but we had no problems with the Xmas day trip at all. The New Years trip was my first trip ever, and DW's first as an adult, and first trip since she was quite young. This was our 7th trip or so, and since then we've figured out alot of good tips & tricks (mostly from here).

Hope this post and DW's report help you make an informed choice about going to WDW around the holidays in the years to come.

Just wanted to chime in (as the DW) that while we found Xmas Day at Disney manageable with some planning ahead, I wouldn't want to do multiple days in a row like this. Because of that, I would opt for a trip starting a week before Xmas and ending on Xmas day - because it stays that crowded through New Year's!

If you don't have to work around school schedules, I'd go sometime the beginning of Dec. According to the touring plan websites the first two weeks of Dec are some of the lowest crowds of the year.
I have friends that go the second week of December every year and they love it. You get the full Christmas WDW experience without all the crowds associated with Christmas/New Years week except on the day they tape the Christmas parade. But if it is just the two of you, you can be flexible and the crowds might not present problems.

I would agree with others and say do not go for Christmas day, I never have myself but like you have toyed with the notion. I just hate the crowds and only go in off season like yourself. I recomend going anytime the week after Thanksgiving through the week before Christmas, this is really the slowest time of the year. Other benefits of this time of the year are lower room rates as other value season times, more moderate temperatures it you don't enjoy the intense heat, and the Christmas decorations go up in Disney right after turkey day; and if you've never experienced Disney decorated for the holidays you have missed some spectacular lights and sights.

we were there the 23 and 24 I WILL NEVER GO TO DISNEY AT CHRISTMAS EVER AGAIN, it was a NIGHTMARE, the place was packed we live in Florida and go alot i have never seen it sooo bad. we left and drove home all the rides were averaging 70- 90 min waits, forget fast pass, at 11pm in epcot there was a 90 min wait for soarin,
for the 9pm fireworks in MK everyone was practically standing on top of each other, this poor lady next to me with her daughter, kept getting bumped stepped on and the girl was in a stroller, people are soooo rude,

NEVER DO DISNEY AT CHRISTMAS UNLESS YOU TAKE ALOT OF XANAX, AND DON'T WANT TO RIDE RIDES, SHOP, EAT, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE.

We were there the 19-21 and it was great! We got to enjoy all the special shows/parades/fireworks (the MK put all the MVMCP entertainment in the park starting on the 20th) and crowds were managable.

I'm not sure I'd brave Chrsitmas Day - we were there for New Years one and hated it - crowds were completely unmanagable by that time.

We have been in May and it was a great time to go. It was hot though. This year we did a trip before Thanksgiving to be our "Christmas trip." (I would never go on Christmas day) It was wonderful in November! I think we will probably do it again. We attended MVMCP on November 20, I can say that I will NEVER do this again though. The crowds are terrible. We could barely even move. The crowds were light in the parks most days and the weather was perfect! :)

We were there from Sep29 thru Dec3. Was packed everyday. Disney Studios was worse than MK on Monday night. Would like to try again next year. But i think we are going to stick to MNSSHP time period, crowds were not as bad then.

i always say that christmas is one of the best times to go to disney. i always expect huge crowds, so as long as you go into the trip expecting the worst, you wont be disappointed. last year on christmas day, i rode expedition everest 7 times in a row. for me, tourguidemike is an absolute must. if you follow his most crowded park schedule, the crowds are easily avoidable. the decorations are beautiful and the kids have so much fun seeing santa mickey and other holiday characters. you should definitely try it at least once...

We just got back yesterday. Were at the parks from the 22-26th. I'd say to go for it so long as you are smart about it. We had a blast and got to do pretty much everything we wanted to do, bearing in mind that we had 'priority' things we wanted to hit, other things (like Jungle Cruise and 3-D movies were on a 'if we can make it without waiting more than 20 minutes' basis).

1. Stay on site so you can take advantage of am EMH hours. The pm EMH hours tend to be a bit more crowded (but still manageable). I prefer the AM hours since people tend to stay out late, and then not feel like getting up early in the morning. :coffee: I am not an early morning person, but I make an extra effort when at Disney. :lovestruc

2. Best place for the evening parade and fireworks at MK - the back of the train station on main street. Hubby and I staked out a spot up there around 6:30pm for the 8pm parade. Sat at a table with a lovely couple from Chicago and had a very nice chat until the parade started. We had a GREAT view of all of the floats, without being hemmed in down along the street (we were up on the back of the train station on the platform/balcony).

3. Hit the 'hot rides' FIRST THING in the am!! Christmas Day we walked onto Expedition Everest 3x WITHOUT needing fast pass (less than 5 minute waits all three times and that was at 9:30am!!!). Did the same thing on the 26th between 8:30-9:30am.

4. Avoid Magic Kingdom on Christmas Day --- until late in the day. We did Animal Kingdom and got TONS done by noon (didn't arrive until 9am eventhough they were open from 7am). Part of the family went to MK around 9pm and closed the park (it was open until 1am...they were turning off lights in Fantasyland when the family members finally left!). They managed to do LOTS of rides during that time.

5. If you want to do the big rides at Epcot and DHS get there EARLY and do them first. We didn't do much at Epcot as a result of getting there late in the day and tired feet *lol*. I tried to get there early, but was overruled by the family (another hint...avoid 'navigation/decision making by committee' it doesn't work and is a pain in the rear!)

6. If you want to book a character breakfast do it more as 'brunch'. We has an 8:15am ressie for a brekkie at DHS, didn't arrive until right before it (my family just WOULDN'T listen to me about getting there early) and by the time we were done eating, the fastpasses for most of the major rides were around 11-ish. It didn't help that Toy Story Mania was down in the morning, so they were handing out fastpasses instead. The Fastpasses were good at 3pm by around 9am!

7. Last but most important - Get to the parks early...have fun....then go nap/rest from 1-5pm....THEN go back to a park and have MORE fun. :))

8. Okay I lied...one more VERY important thing -- no matter WHAT the weather channel says, be prepared for BOTH colder and HOT weather!!! WChannel said it would be cool all week, so we only brought jeans and long sleeve shirts...it was in the 80's every day!! We had to buy t-shirts and sweat through jeans the whole week - NOT FUN!!! Come prepared for anything. :lmao:

At least the t-shirts were on sale! How often does that happen?? :cool1:

Thanks everyone for the help - it seems if you go knowing it might be super crowded any time it's not is just a bonus!
