Disinfecting your room before stay?

Over the last several years, and just after the 60 minutes program, I have been a little fanatical about disinfecting rooms before my family or I stay in them. I usually purchase a can of Lysol and spray everything in the room. If you do try this try to do it when you won’t be in the room for an hour as the smell can be strong. I was told that the most disgusting things to build bacteria  are the TV remote and the phone. You should never sleep on or use the comforters as they aren't changed as often and purchase new pillows at Wal-Mart before your stay as the pillow cases are changed but not the pillows. Pillows cost about $6 each and can be thrown out after your stay. The pillows have sweat, skin cells, and those ooky little bugs that crawl in your hair. Side note, did you know that currency has the highest concentration of feces than any other object.

I by no means have OCD just shows like 60 minutes and CSI with those ultraviolet lights have really freaked me out. When I go to bed at night in hotel rooms and the lights are out, images of all those white blotches on the walls and ceilings pop into my head. I have never had major problems with DW resorts before except for once when I was staying at CBR and the cleaning staff left bags of laundry in the room and there was a certain type of follicle was left between the sheets and on the sink. I called the Cleaning Manager and while we were in the park our room was totally cleaned and little rabbit towels left for the kids. Every time that I reserve a room anywhere I always request an extra cleaning to the room, besides my issues my 19 month old is very sensitive to bacteria and can break out in a rash or get sick easily. If you request extra cleaning make sure you tip appropriately.

I don’t mean to disgust anyone just trying to make sure no one gets sick for their WDW trip.

Does anyone else have any tips to share?

We bring our pillows for me and DH mainly for comfort.

Unless something is visibly dirty I don't even concern myself with it. I figure that with all the exposure the kids get at school, the germs of everyday life, the airplanes to get there, the crowded buses, the lines for the rides etc.. we are exposed to a wide variety of yuckies. Not a concern here, we are all healthy so there are no real issues we need to concern ourselves with.

The one thing we do a lot of is wash our hands.

I will get some Lysol for our trip. Thanks for the idea.

I know it's all there but I try to block it out of my mind. If we stay at a hotel for more than one night, we ALWAYS purposely spill something on the comforter so that we get a clean one.

Im with you on this one.

You could always buy those pillow covers from the dollar store. It's mostly to protect from allergens. You can place the pillow inside it and then use your own (not white) pillow cases if you don't want to buy new pillows.

Taking new pillows and then leaving them is a great idea. More room in the suitcase for going home.

Touching the comforters and blankets makes me a little uneasy. I had planned on just not using the comforters. I'm going to ask for an extra sheet for each bed so I can put a sheet on top of the blankets. They do that on cruise ships and it's kinda nice.

We're bringing a toddler this year so I am bringing along a packet of scrubbing bubbles wipes for the tub. The tub is probably fine. It will just make me feel better to wipe it down.

I also clean everthing in the room with Lysol spray and I also take the Lysol wipes and wipe down the counter and the toilet seat etc.

I bring my own hand soap pump - as the idea of everyone using the same soap grosses me out. :rolleyes2

I always check the mattresses by quickly, at night removing the sheets- I check for bed bugs and on occasion have stripped the beds and sprayed with Lysol.(not sure if it works, but it makes me feel better)

We take hand sanitizer with us to the parks and use it frequently.

I bring my own pillowcases and place over top of the hotel cases. Alternatively housekeeping will bring you extra cases if you ask to double up. You can also use a towel and place it over the pillow.

The pillow cases and towels are all washed in extremely hot water and bleach so I don't worry so much about that.

I don't allow my children to sit on top of the comforters when coming out of the bath and/or when they are changing out of bathing suits.

My dh thinks I am wayyyy over the top with this stuff - and does not worry at all.

I have been taking my own pillow and sheets with me for years on vacations. My family thinks I am nuts, but after some of those documentary shows, they take their pillows too. I wipe the phone and remote too with lysol.

Soooo... what do you all do about the germs on the buses? And on railings? And on the rides? And in the public bathrooms? Seems like alot of unnecessary worrying and cleaning to me. :confused3

And yes... I have seen the documentaries on what they find in hotel rooms. But multiply that by 100 and I'll bet you get the germs in public places that are not cleaned every day.

I'm with you! :thumbsup2 I think you're fighting a losing battle if you think a can of Lysol is going to keep you from germs in Disney. Although, I think I heard that Walmart might be coming out with personal travel bubbles that will eliminate the need for any and all exposure to public places :rolleyes1

I've never cleaned or disinfected a hotel room. If it actually looks dirty, I ask for a different room. (This has never happened at Disney.)

I also use the sheets, pillows, pillowcases, towels, etc. provided by the hotel. I even (gasp) leave the comforters on the beds!

Let's see . . .

I also take baths in hotel tub without scrubbing it out, use the jacuzzi without disinfecting it (if we're lucky enough to have one in our room), use the glasses in the room, walk barefoot on the carpet, swim in the pool, and use the hot tub every night.

Wow. I guess I like to walk on the wild side. :scared1:

And, in 15 Disney vacations, I've never gotten sick - and neither has anyone traveling with me.

My best advice - no more 60 Minutes.

Well, I'll tell you the most DISGUSTING WDW resort experience I had this past February.

We were down for the UCA HS Cheer Competition. Staying at All-Star Movies. When we first entered the room there was a half empty water bottle sitting on the sink; I threw that out. In the bathroom there was a razor top on the back of the toilet; I thre that out. The last straw was when my DD pulled down the sheets to get into bed and what did they find??? POOP on the sheets ... we were NEVER so disgusted/disappointed in WDW. I immeditely called the front desk and told them the events and let them know that we wanted to be moved immediately. They offered to "clean the room". Are you kidding me, NO WAY! I want out, NOW and we started packing. They didn't have any more rooms at the All Stars being that it was filled with cheerleaders so we were upgraded to POFQ ... then they tried to charge me for the upgrade. I don't think so, then tried to charge us a $50 fee for something, I don't think so.

NOW THAT'S GROSS! :guilty: :sad2:

I also clean everything. It's not so much the germs or worry about getting flu or cold, it's about the disgusting things left behind by previous occupants. I've watched all the news shows and know what they find on remotes, telephone, door handles, bedspreads, etc. I just don't want to think about sitting on bedspread where someone has left some of their bodily fluid.

ITA ::yes::

I bring Clorox wipes to clean off the sink and the toilet, and I clean the TV remote and the phone. I bring XXL T-shirts to put on the pillows - not that they will make a difference, I just like to do that.

I don't let DS put his face on the comforters, and I inspect the beds carefully before anyone gets between the sheets. Last trip DH thought the blanket smelled funny, so we called down for a new one.

I try to be somewhere in the middle on this - I will do SOME extra cleaning and encourge DS to remember the comforters haven't been changed in a long time - but I don't obsess over it. Well, with all the recent reports about bed bugs I might obsess just a little! ;)
