I'm so mad at them. So the other day I called them about a question I had. Well they informed me I was eligible sp? for a FREE upgrade to a new DVR. So I told them great well the guy came and set it up. Everything os great untiil I get the bill and see a 95.00 fee they charged to hook the darn thing up. That to me isn't a free upgrade. Talk about a bait and switch.:mad:
 
You didn't have to pay for the DVR, of course you were going to have to pay for installation. You could always call them and complain, they will probably knock off 25.00 or so. I wouldn't call that bait and switch, you DID get a free DVR.
 
I'm going to try to fight it. There is no way that I would have agreeded to pay them 95.00 for the guy to come for 5 minutes to knock on the door and say here it is. have a good day

But he didn't just say here it is, have a good day. He installed it. That is what the fee is for. You would do much better to call and complain, they probably won't give you all your money back but will knock off some.
 
since you already had service, it probably could have been hooked up by you in less than 5 minutes. Seems like a rip to charge you $95 for something very simple to do.
 
Sounds like you got exactly what they said you would get - "an upgrade to a new free DVR".. The $95 was for installation.. If they weren't sending it to me through the mail (so that I could hook it up myself), I would assume that there would be an installation fee and I would have asked how much it was going to be prior to making an appointment to have it installed..

Can you cancel the whole deal? If not, "maybe" they'll give you a refund - to keep you as one of their customers - but I wouldn't count on it..
 
I am pretty sure that they have to be upfront about any charges to you.

Did the offer self installation? Did you ask to have someone come to install it?

We have been victims of "bait and switch" by DISH. I will never use them again for that reason.

This isn't bait and switch. Bait and switch is when they advertise XYZ DVR, which is the best DVR on the market but when you go buy it they give you ABC DVR.

We called last week because we got a new TV at Christmas and wanted to get it hooked up to our HD DVR. The first thing they said is that there would be a $75 charge to come out and do that. We declined.
 
Call them and tell them you want it removed. They tried to pull the same thing with us, and they ended up taking off the charge. They also ended up lowering our monthly payment by almost $20/month for six months to keep us as customers.

Golfgal we were never told there was a 95 dollar fee. I would never agree to that. 95.00 is a lot of money for us.

While I am not sure the had to tell her about the extra fee for installation legally, ethically they should have told her.

But something I have learned over the years was to ask outright "will there be any additional charges"? They have to tell you then.:thumbsup2

We have DirecTv. We were told that there was no charge to install the dish. When they came to install it, we needed a pole and it cost $100. Normal installation was not with a pole. I disputed it and they gave me a $100 credit. They never told me that there were any additional costs involved with the installation when I scheduled the install, and I did ask.

How did the conversation go? They said you get a free upgrade, you said great come on out? Did they get a chance to tell you about the fee? They do record conversations so if you wanted to you could go back to them and tell them you were never told about the fee. They would have that on tape and then you could see what they would do.
 
I'd absolutely fight the charge. We had a similar situation, except the installer told us there would be a charge. I got on the phone with Dish then and there and they waived the charge. If the first person tries to brush you off,ask to speak to a supervisor. They should want to keep you happy, because I'm sure Direct TV would love to install whatever you would like for free.

Update. We called this morning and they took if off. Then gave us two free moives on pay-per view:thumbsup2
