Oh my gosh, I was in Hastings today and in the Health section they had a used pedicure/manicure kit. The box said it came with such things as a foot file and clippers. I can't believe they are selling a used one! Doesn't that violate some kind of health code? There has been lots of publicity recently infections from improperly sanitized pedicure equipment. This just grossed me out.

I am calling the store manager on Monday and also writing the corporate office. I'd hate for anybody to get an infection because they bought this. I can pretty much guarantee you it wasn't sterilized. What the heck were they thinking?

Why wouldn't it have been sterilized? I don't think it is that big of a deal, aren't the instruments metal and easily sterilized?

In Maine I believe you can't resell those type of things if the package is opened. I thought this was the way everywhere.

Ah, sorry, I was not aware of that. I just figured if it was metal, it could be sterilized.:)

This is something that would have been owned by a private citizen. The standard for sterilization of these instruments according the Health Department is an autoclave. I can guarantee you that neither Hastings nor the person who owned this has an autoclave. I highly doubt that the person who owns this thought to sterlize it at all. I know I wouldn't have thought too much about it if I didn't have a mom who works as a microbiologist and has given me all the germ lectures.

ETA: I know that a pumice stone was also included and I don't know that you can effectively sterilize something that porous.

Can't. Comment. OCD is screaming.

I guess if you're grossed out by the idea, don't buy it.:confused3 someone else might not be.

I don't plan on buying it, but that does not mean that I feel comfortable just leaving it for somebody else. This is right by the books on Diabetic foot care. I could easily see somebody getting this thinking of it as a great way to take care of their feet. If you have diabetic peripheral neuropathy, it's very easy for you to get an infection which often leads to the loss of your foot. Even women who are in perfect health have lost their limbs or even their lives from infections from improperly sterilized equipment. Sadly, most women don't know what to look for when they get a pedicure.

I have written the customer relations, and I plan on calling the store manager on Monday. I can guarantee you this is a Health Code violation, and if they don't remove it I plan on calling the Health Department. Items like this cannot be sold once they have been opened. Hastings should know better.

Did you bring it to the attention of the employees there when you saw it? Did they refuse to pull the offending item from the shelves? It just seems like you are taking this very personally and being overly harsh. Heck, if you're that concerned, buy it yourself and throw it away! I guess I don't understand the huge offense.

They were very busy last night, there were no employees to be found, plus the majority of the employees are in high school. Believe me, if you have any kind of question that is out of hte ordinary, they don't know how to handle it. It's just inexperience on their part. I'm sorry if it seems harsh, but this is against the law. I would rather overreact than haer a news story down the line about somebody getting a nast y infection from this product and knowing that I could have potentially stopped it.
