Diser's for CMO!

[Okay, here's where I get flamed...] That's why I always find it so interesting when contestants complain loudly that Disney has picked "professionals" as semifinalists. (Heck! If a professional was willing to give you oodles of hours of free labor, wouldn't you accept the offer, too?) That said, I'm not trying to make light of the situation. I "get" that most of us on the DISboards are passionate about Disney and probably even dream of working there. That's why these contests are such emotionally charged events... We all wish to have our dreams come true!
Yes, yes, yes...... I did open my mouth and inserted my foot. ;)

How does the saying go? "Make sure the brain is in gear before the mouth...." oh nevermind..... I can't remember.

Whew! :flower3:

I wrote my last post (with nobody specific in mind), clicked "Submit," then seriously broke out into a cold sweat. You know: One of those, "What have I just done?" moments. :scared: 'Glad to see I haven't been banished from the thread... ;)

'Maybe I should make a new rule for myself. ... No replying to the DISboards past a certain hour. :rolleyes1 (reading = yes; writing = no) At a certain point, my brain starts to turn mushy!

I freely admit it..... I'm a member of the guilty party. I can be very opinionated, especially when it comes to Disney, and tend to shoot my mouth off before thinking things through. No worries DISgeek....... we are coolio.

'Glad to hear it! :teeth:

You know, I'm sure getting tired of waking up at 6am on Saturdays and not being able to get back to sleep...Monday-Friday, I'm so tired I have trouble getting out of bed before 7, but for some reason on Saturdays my body wants to get up and outta bed--it's like the theme music to "Good Morning Mickey" is playing inside me or something...

By the way, thanks for everyone's input on my earlier question...now I've just gotta make it to the top 10 and then the top 3...

Kenny, I also enjoyed reading your essay--250 words isn't much, but you were able to cram it with a lot of info and detail--this is where economy in writing comes in handy! (I spent about 16 months as a college writing tutor, and you should see some of the long-winded essays and research papers I had to wade through).

:rolleyes1 "good morning, and good morning Mickey! It's gonna be a great--yes a really great--it's gonna be a great daaaaay!"

Dang, now it's stuck in my head for real.

OH, DISGeeks this thread would be WAAAAAAYYYYY too boring if we were all :hippie: and in agreement about everything! :rotfl2:

That said ;) , sure Disney can choose whomever they want, and the most "professional" person may be their top pick b/c they are the best and easiest to get up to speed ... however, look what's happening with American Idol -- everyone, ok, lots complaining about the 'professionals' on the show -- when a contest is presented as if anyone (Joe Schmoe) can win it, then when the general public/mob sees someone with extra up their sleeves, they want to cry foul.

"Professionals" (and everyone can interpret that differently from people with prior recording contract to actresses to people who worked for Disney before to those who sell "Disney" stuff, etc) in my opinion already have an advantage. Perhaps I give more credit to the person who has to work harder....maybe it's a "Root for the Underdog" type of thing...

I haven't voted in American Idol yet...and usually don't until I really like someone near the end (yes, I'm embarrassed to admit I voted for AI before!) but I, too, want to vote for someone who hasn't already produced a record.

From the Inside the Magic forum...

It's balloon guy...

Howdy all,

In the spirit of perhaps-too-little-too-late, I guess I'll come forward as one of the "unknown 6" (if my math is right, which is never certain, given that I teach English). Long-time lurker, first-time poster.

My name is Dana, and this is my video: http://www.dreamcmo.com/view-dream-cmo-applicant.php?CMODID=CMO-B47856E27DCDB6F4DE94048C00BF8CDB
I hope someone out there has enjoyed it as much as I've enjoyed all of yours! Amidst all the creativity, cutouts, chair surfing, and just plain good fun, I'm flattered to be in such spirited (and Disney-spirited) company.

Of course, at this point, I'm convinced that a certain marketing company has already called everyone who's in the Top 10 and sworn them to secrecy, so I thought I would pass the time as I wait for my rejection email by outing myself and finally posting. I've kept mum because I'm just superstitious enough to fear jinxing things. My even greater fear is that I will let slip even further my already tenuous grasp on real life as I obsess about all things CMO.

But in for a penny, in for a pound. It's great to know you all!

May bunches of pin-bearing balloons ever fall in your laps,
--Dana

Glad to learn about another one. If you have lurked here Dana... let us know!

Yeah, -- another one comes out!!!

And I believe Kenny had already thought he was in the running...now we know for sure!

Balloon Guy -- this was a very creative and simple use of magic! Good Job! I really like how the simple concept of the balloons draw me back to Main Street WDW right away!

Come on Dana, see the light and come over to the dark side....oops, I mean to the DIS...:lmao: ;)

OK, but you might want to carefully define "worked harder." My entry has been the source of a lot of talk over being "slick" and "professional," but it took a LOT of work--I'd guess AT LEAST 30-40 hours of planning, filming, animating (which took the hugest chunk--the forest animals section alone has like 6 different animals that all required rough animation, clean-up animation and coloring, along with shadow effects on a couple of characters), adding sound, etc. I might have magic, but there's no magical "animate" button that did all the work for me.

I feel that I poured my heart and soul into my entry just as much as any other entrant. The magical sparkles were the only effect/animation I didn't create from scratch, only because the program I used had a particles effect. I just used my computer and the animation training I've spent a lifetime developing as my creative tools rather than cardboard cut-outs, fancy costumes, signs, footage from inside the parks, etc.

Whoa, sorry to go off on that rant...like I mentioned earlier, I got up WAY too early this morning...I need to eat some raisin bran or something...

I'm so excited that this is finally out of the bag. I've been dying to post the link but Dana is very modest! He's our best friend and the girl in the video is my daughter. Dana is totally a lurker and will hopefully post here later.

I knew all along that he really got the "magic" in the C "M" O. I'm glad that you think that his is neat and I know he's in great company!

I seemed to have missed a whole lot, and was hoping that someone could fill me in without having to read 75 pages. Do we know any more of the top 20, have the top ten come out?

Whoa, I knew everyone on this site was quick, but seriously! Your outing of my self-outing breaks some kind of record!

I've never been prouder of the moniker "balloon guy."

Cheers and good luck to all! May we exhibit some semblance of productivity as we thumb-twiddle and pine away,

No, I hear ya! I agree that it's nice to see the underdog get some "love." (...Makes for a more dramatic plotline anyway! ;) ) I'm just not too surprised that Disney tries to pluck out the "A-Team" when it comes to jobs with specific criteria that put the winners in the public eye. Disney has a reputation to uphold, after all.

(As you mentioned before, people complained loudly during parts of the Moms Panel contest, too, but Disney is working those Panelists really hard! It's impressive the number of questions they've answered. .... And they seem to be enjoying it, too, because -- well -- "it's Disney"! ;)

In this case, by "professional" I'm meaning the folks who already have some sort of public-speaking, entertaining, DJaying or marketing background. If you look really closely, you'll notice that many of the Mom Panelists also have certain marketing, freelance writing or librarian skills. (Actually, the more I think about it, the more I consider the librarian credential a terrific qualification, because -- let's face it! -- nobody can possibly know the answer to every question. I'm sure that good research skills are a boon!)

I've actually only watched a handful of AI episodes, which is probably a good thing, or else I'd probably get "hooked." Being a bit of a rubbernecker, "I roll that way"! ;)

No official word yet on the Top 10. 'Looks like we'll likely have to wait until March 2 (midnight), when those 10 are posted and voting goes live.

As for the Top 20: One more just was "outed." (Welcome "Balloon Guy"! :wave2:) Now were down to the mystery "Missing Six." If you return to the front page of this thread, LuvsTink has done a terrific job of posting members of the Top 20, who have come forward -- along with a lot of DISers, who submitted entries at the beginning of the contest. "Balloon Guy's" video is hidden somewhere in this tread. Maybe somebody can post it again?

Edited to Add: Ahhh! I just noticed that a link to ["Balloon Guy"] Dana's video submission already is available -- in fleagle's Super Sleuth post (above - #2089) pulled from Inside the Magic forum.

I think it is tough to compare something like the CMO contest to a competition like American Idol. On AI someone that "works harder" is someone that has paid their dues, worked from the bottom to get to where they are at present..... i.e. taken a ton of vocal lessons, perfected their craft, etc..... not already have had a record deal handed to them that went nowhere.

So I don't think that anyone was trying to knock the fact that you poured a lot of your time, energy, and creativity into your video..... every entry needed an angle to make their video standout, yours was clever animation. And I think that is the rub to some people..... if you didn't have the animation, would you still have been selected as a finalist?

I'd like to think yes, because it is apparent you have a love for "the SPONSOR" (I got your back Kenny) and as more finalists have come forward, some of them are just really the entrant talking about their love of "the SPONSOR" (I've still got your back Kenny) and using the "snap finger" trick, no big gimmicks or special effects.
