Ok.......hopefully someone can follow this and help us. Discover card has a link through its Shop Discover Card for 5% cash back on purchases at Target.com. Discover card also has a 5% cash back on internet purchases through the end of December. Has anyone purchased Disney gift cards and received the 5% cash back for using the link and an additional 5% for the current Discover card promotion for using the card for online purchase? We are hoping to hear "yes" from someone out there.

I know actual experience is the best and probably the only reliable response but you got me thinking. I just sent a question to Discover and will report their response. Thanks here's hoping ::yes::

That is how it worked for me last year during this promotion. I shopped through the portal for all my online Christmas purchases and got both %off and 5% CB.

I'd be curious if you could stack the red card discount on top of that (since Discover is essentially paying the discount). Obviously you have to charge the amount on your Discover to get the 5% + 5% promotions.

For the record, I don't have a red card yet. I called Target yesterday and they said their limits on a card are typically low to begin with but when I inquired about making a large purchase (i.e., lots of Disney gift cards), that you can still get the discount on the entire purchase, you just have to complete the payment of your purchase on an alternative form of payment. Seems straight forward when in the store with a cashier, however, I'm not sure how that works out online since it only gives an option of one form of payment.

So a hypothetical example if I wanted to buy $1,000 of Disney GC's. and if I have an initial credit limit of $200, I'd apply the red card for that amount and then use the discover for the remaining $800. They way I interpreted the call with the Red Card department is that you'd get the 5% discount on the first $200, plus you'd get the 5%/5% bonuses on the remaining $800 in addition to the 5% red card discount so you'd get a 15% discount (not a true 15%, but you get the point). Probably way complicating the scenario but if it works, think of the savings!! :cool1:

This would be good to try out!
I'm curious if there's a way to do this if your Target Red Card has a higher limit than the purchase amount. Would it be possible to split the transaction onto two cards? My instinct is that we can't.

FTR, Target only allows you to buy 10 gift cards at a time, so since they sell $50 GCs, your max in one transaction looks to be $500. Plus, they will charge a $1.95 shipping fee if you do not use the Target Red Card.

sounds good. let us know what you hear back from Discover card.

I don't have a target red card but I do have a discover card... Does target.com sell Disney gift cards?

When you go through shop discover doesnt it say not valid on taxes and gift cards and what not?

Its interesting you ask that because I've looked in the past and they were not available online. However, upon the original poster's question, I checked and you can in fact purchase online. As mentioned earlier, the max purchase you may make in a single transaction is $500.

Here is Discover's response:"The ShopDiscover Cashback Bonus is separate from your standard Cashback Bonus and any other promotion you may receive. As long as your purchases meet the ShopDiscover merchant's terms and conditions, the Cashback Bonus will automatically be credited to your Discover® account within eight weeks."
So, I interpret that to mean it is up to Target. Going to give it a shot. Hopefully I can figure out if I get cash back on Target gc as I have done other online purchases this month. Will report back. :thumbsup2

I'm glad I found this thread. I've been considering doing the exact same thing.

Shop Discover terms for Target:
"Offer does not apply to Target Gift Cards, personal care, baby care, household items, e-GiftCards, gift wrap, tax, or shipping and handling charges"

I understand this to mean any physical gift cards at Target.com, except those exclusively for Target, should be eligible.

How is it booking a Disney hotel with their gift cards?

From skimming some other threads it sounds like you have to call in and depending on how much you are spending, it can take a very long time. I may just use shopdiscover's 5% back with a hotel booking company (hotels.com, orbitz, expedia, travelocity, etc.) if it's really onerous (plus not having to deal with gift cards). The terms for the online spending bonus say that anything from the "Travel" category is excluded, so I would expect 5% rate (excluding taxes and fees) + 1% total spent cashback versus 10% total spent cashback with the gift card route.

For those who tried this, have you received the 10% cash back? Would be good to know in the future!

Yes! I can now confirm the bonuses stacked. The ShopDiscover bonus does take a while to show up on your statement.

Also, DvF Diva is correct the limit is $500 per order (10 x $50) and there is a $1.95 shipping fee. This means it's almost but not quite 10% back.

I called in to book the hotel and was able to use as many I wanted in a split tender transaction.

I hope this info helps.

YMMV, but you may be able to get the shop discover discount with the RedCard.

I purchased from Sephora and used one of VIB gift cards that they send out after Thanksgiving as a partial payment, paying the rest with Discover. I thought I would only get CB on the amount put on Discover only, but I got 5% + 5% on the entire amount.

Recently, I purchased from Target through the link. Out of habit, I took my RedCard out of my wallet for payment, remembering after I paid that I had went through the portal. I figured no biggie since I would get 5% back either way, but at least I got free shipping (purchase was under $50). Imagine my surprise about a week later when I got the "You've earned Cashback through ShopDiscover" email for 5% of the total amount.

This is intriguing! I don't currently have a Discover card - is the 5% online purchase bonus specific to a certain type of Discover card? And do you need to register or sign up for it, or is it automatically applied to your card when you shop online?

Titally confused. How can you earn 5% on Discover and 5% red card at same time? You can only use one card!!!

You can't. Red Card is linked to your bank card (like writing a check from your acct). You can't link it to a Discover Card.

I think what people are doing is shopping through the Discover shopping portal to get 5% back on in their account but using their Target card to get a 5% discount on the actual purchase. I don't know if it actually works that way or not.

I do know that if I were to make a purchase through Southwest Air's Rapid Reward shopping portal, it doesn't matter what credit card I use. But if I go through Chase Ultimate Rewards' shopping portal, I have to use my Chase card to get the extra points for shopping. It could go either way with Discover.

I don't think you can get 5% back shopping through Discover without charging to Discover. To get the 5% off your purchase you have to use the Red Card which is linked to your bank card.

Not to split hairs, but not every REDCard is a debit card which is linked to a bank account. Some are actually store charge cards similar to a Kohl's or Macy's charge card.

However, this poster seemed to have a similar experience to what I was referencing:
