For the month of July, August and September, the Discover Card is offering a 5% bonus cashback on Gas, Hotels, Movies and Themeparks.

Does anyone know, when you use your room charge at WDW, how the room bill is categorized by Discover? Is it considered one of those, or is it just filed as Entertainment, in which case it wouldn't qualify?

Any thoughts appreciated!

On my recent Discover statement, most of my charges for WDW were classified as "travel/entertainment". I didn't have a room charge though - we rented DVC points.

I have points too and that is how we are staying.... but I still charge back to my room for dining, Downtown Disney, etc.

watch/check the limit on the 5% offer, it's usually pretty low. I think its only $300, but I could be wrong.

You are correct, at least for us the limit is $300. We're just using it for gas till we reach the $300 cap and then its back to the Disney Visa... Gotta get that Disney money! ;)

Gas, Supermarket and Drug stores are the only things I don't use the Discover card for..... My free Cashback AMEX gives me 5% with NO LIMIT on those categories all year long, so I only look to the "other" categories that Discover offers.

It is true that Discover has a $300 cap... so it really only generates an additional $15, but $15 is more than $0, so I'll do it! :thumbsup2

I use Discover when I can for the bonus, but the limits are SO low. Chase Freedom has 5% cash back on gasoline for this quarter and the limit is $1500. when they run 5% cash back on groceries its up to $1500, not $200 like Discover. But it's great to still be able to get cash back bonuses; I pay my credit cards off every month so it's a good deal for me.

Love my Chase Freedom card.:)

I agree.... paying it off each month is the key. If you don't you are only chewing away at the cashback till it's gone.

I just got the Chase Freedom card too! I haven't had a Disney visa bonus offer in months, so it hasn't been being used to much...

Back to the OP, when we've charged to the room, I believe it showed up as "front desk old key west resort" or something like that, which to me, is a hotel charge.

I looked last night and it is covered. I want to say it said travel/entertainment. It was for our vacation package. I am kinda mad, I just got this card, put my trip on it, then found out there is a $300 limit for the cash back, which was not told to me when I got the card. I thought it would be cash back on however much I charged. $15 is so minimal, compared to what I could have got.

I'm curious about the Chase Freedom card. With my Discover @ 1% if I spend $5000. I earn $50. in cash back points, it is actually worth $50. Is the CF the same? I know others when I do the breakdown it doesn't seem to be worth the same. So I guess my question is, on spending $5000. what would the actual reward end up being? Do they send you a check when you turn in the rewards?

Thanks. JoAnn

I have a wal-mart discover and i never get offers for 5 %

The 5% bonus is not "offered" to you. As far as I know, you never get an email that says, "hey, you want this"? You need to go to the Discover web page and sign up for the quarterly bonuses. Next quarter, starting in October includes restaurants.

Hope that helps....

To me, as well, that would be a hotel charge.... but the $64,000 question is what does Discover consider it? :rotfl:

Chase Freedom pays 1% back on purchases. If you read the fine print for Discover it says (at least mine does) that you don't earn 1% until you reach $3000 in your calendar year which is based on when you got the card. Until you reach $3000 you only earn .25%. Purchases at Club stores and discounters do not count towards the $3000. Learned all these things about Discover here on this Board.

Chase Freedom pays 5% on quarterly catagories like Discover but the limit on purchases is usually $1500. Groceries were the category in
the last quarter of 2010 and first one on 2011. For 6 months I earned 5% on the groceries I was going to buy anyway. You can cash out your Freedom Rewards for gift cards or my favorite - a check! You do have to sign up for the bonus each quarter like Discover but you have until the final month of the quarter to do so and still get the rewards.

I earned around $175 in rewards in the 1st 6 months I had my Chase Freedom. $50 was a sign up bonus.

Thanks, Yes, I am aware of this with Discover. But with CF do you earn one dollar for each dollar/point (1% if I spend $5000. I earn $50.) would this actually compute out to $50. as Discover does? This is what I haven't found an answer to. Thanks again!!

Ok I have the Chase Freedom card and thought I signed up for the 5% cash back on gas etc but the bill just came with the gas charge and there was no bonus cashback..do you have to wait to get credit for that...on Discover it is right on that first bill 5X credit for gas etc... thanks for any help.
I just wanted to say I got card in mail for the Freedom cash back and you went to a site to register card...but you also don't get any confirmation email like with Discover that you signed up...

My rewards usually don't show up until after the I get the e-mail that my statement is available. My payment is due on the 14th and it's usually around the 18th when I see the previous month's rewards post. The gas promo started July 1 so I haven't had a billing cycle close yet.

What description does the statement show for the gas purchase?

Ok I just got my Freedom statement it had only one charge on 7/5 for the gas and it has no description..just purchase and W******* lit mart , name of gas station mini mart(same place I charge on Discover and get credit unless they changed something) I see no classifacation... guess I will keep using the Discover card...

hmm, will have to look closely at my Chase Freedom statement when it comes. I had no problem earning other rewards but have not been through a quarter with gas category. I too have a Discover card I can use.
