does Disney repeat the same discounts year after year for Aulani like they do WDW? Is there a way to have an idea if and what discount they may have for bookings for stays in May 2017?

Discounts are offered if they have rooms to fill. Often it is for certain categories of room. Best thing is to book the time frame and category you can afford. If a discount comes out later, then you can rebook or try to apply discount to reservation.
