You call member services and ask if any rooms are available for member discount. They can be difficult to get because they will only give the discount if they expect the room will not be rented for points, it comes from the points inventory of rooms. Since it comes from points inventory, housekeeping is the same as DVC rules.
An advantage is you can get the 25% discount, extend a stay and be guaranteed you will not have to move. They will treat your points stay and the member discount night(s) as one stay. I did this last year, we arrived on Friday at OKW, did Friday & Saturday member discount, then Sunday to Thursday on points. When we arrived, we got our room keys & parking pass for the entire stay. Trash & Towel was Monday, the 4th day of the linked reservation.
On the other hand, you can sometimes get more than a 25% discount through CRO. They recently offered about a 40% discount on a studio at OKW with an AP discount. With the AP discount, it is treated as a separate non-member reservation. You get full housekeeping on those days. You have to go to the front desk on the day you switch from cash to points and get new keys. There is no guarantee you will not have to move but it is unlikely.
Thanks, DebbieB, for the info. I really didn't know about the discount....don't know when I'll get to try it out, but I'll keep looking for the opportunity. Since we're AP holders, I will also check through CRO for any other discounts available to us, too. Penny saved is penny earned, right? Really appreciate your help!!
