Discounted Disney Gift Cards

Is this something that has still been going on? I remember reading about it at some point and time. Before you leave for your trip, you get an email from WDW and you could get like $500 or $1000 gift cards at reduced rates. Sound familiar?

I am not sure if it still going on but we received one for our trip in Dec. It is a disney merchandise card. You can only use it at WDW owned stored and only for merch no food or drinks or pictures. We bought the 600.00 one for 495.
