I have been looking at you guys post for the past couple days and was inspired to start learning how to sew. I had bought an old singer at a yard sale last year. After fooling with it for about an hour, I was able to sew one line. Then it broke. So can you recommend a good machine for a beginer. Also how did you learn to sew. Was it trial and error, did you have someone teach you, is there a website or book to read?

thanks for all your help
lynn

WELCOME! Glad to have you! And I just started teaching myself about 6 months ago, so I would say just jump in and go for it!

I love this outfit! I am a little behind here, flu is going through my house:sick: I did cut out pieces to make DD a valentine's skirt and top, but haven't gotten to sewing it yet. Hopefully I can get back to it tomorrow! As usual you guys have posted some really cute stuff. I really hate getting behind on this thread, it takes a while to catch up!

Sorry to hear everyone is sick! Hope everyone feels better soon!

Here's what I've been working on/obsessing over....

Here's Saylor wearing it...a bit big, obviously....but still!

customs003-1.jpg

My FIRST attempt at AG clothes...yeesh! They take as long as big girl clothes!
customs006.jpg

My first try at this pattern...I LOVE the pattern, but I made the skirt too long...dangit!!!
customs010.jpg

I just bought this pattern (it's the YCMT wrap skirt) and used leftover fabric from the stripwork...Super easy and I think it's pretty cute!

Well, girlies, I'm off to Vegas for the weekend...Seli is competing in nationals for cheer...so! We'll be rah rahing for the next few days....have a great weekend! I'll try to catch up when we get home....woo hoo!!!
:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

LOVE:lovestruc EVERYTHING! I, too, have been eyeing that wrap skirt! Just not sure if it will fit my little one yet!

I am so sorry, but I remember when my boss took that picture and that was a duplicate of a real cake. The icing is real, but the "cake" is styrofoam. The "dummy" was on display in the front window of the bakery for about a week or two. I can post some that are real cake if you would like.

This is a real wedding cake that I did. It's just a real simple one. I've done better looking ones. I think that my boss took the picture because it was my first wedding cake I did with columns in it.

My first basketweave.

My first sculpted duck. I'll see if I can find a pic of the goose that I did and won an award for.

Your cakes are FANTASTIC! you are VERY talented.

Love the western cake! It fits in great here in Texas!

Can I join the weight watchers group in about a year and a half? I've got to finish cooking up this baby and I breast feed for a year during which I lose all of my weight initially and then it comes to a screeching halt. :confused3 I thought breast feeding was supposed to help you lose weight but it doesn't work for me. Thank God I don't put on a lot of weight during pregnancy since I'm carrying some extra cushioning around to start off with!

:rotfl: :rotfl2: The cooking up this baby comment made me laugh!

Today is the big dance and Megan woke up with a cold. I knew she was a little off yesterday. Knowing her, she will fight through it, she is not a big wimp like me. She is very excited and already drew a picture of her and her dad at the dance. I will post pictures tonight!

I hope she feels better and has a great time tonight! We want pics!!!!

Go for it! I made myself a pair in December and received many nice compliments! I do wish I had paired adifferent top with them. :confused3

Alright I think that was overload... Sorry:)
I'm sure this will hep all you trying to lose weight:lmao:

These are AWESOME! I love the baby! You guys are sooo talented! You can sew and bake and decorate cakes! WOW!

All day kindergarten won't be a good thing for my poor sister!! :sad2: She's going to be a basketcase.

I LOVE all of your new outfits. Just look at that beautiful little Saylor!! She's such a little doll!

Yes, I do remember the all day kindergarten just about put me over the edge at first, and Seli too! Poor thing, she'd come home from school everyday and just about collapse she was so tired! It was a lot at first, but!! She has truly benefitted from that all day kindergarten...even now in 6th grade! The boys have done half day kindergarten and it just doesn't prepare them enough for what they're expected to know in 1st grade---which makes NO sense. ANYWAY! I'm getting ready to enroll my littlest guy for kindergarten...which is UNreal! How does this time go so fast? I swear I'm 25....HONEST!!!! Well, my heart goes out to your sis! She'll cry her eyes out...we all do! Getting a little teary thinking about it :sad1: :sad1:

OH MY GOSH! That baby is the cutest thing EVER!!! You should be on that cake making show! WOW!!!!! :worship:

OKay, I've seriously gotta get outta here...we're leaving for our trip in an hour but I had to check in one more time!!! Thanks for checking out my latest creations and my little Saylor-she is a sweetie! I waited a long time to get that little girl (3 whole boys is a LONG LONG time!)!!!

Have a great weekend!!!! Seli says thanks for the luck!!!:cheer2:

I must say I am in awe of all the cakes. I can't decorate a simple cake let alone something like that. You guys are soo talented

Once again, I am hopelessly behind.

Teresa, I am glad you are feeling better. Your pictures from the movie are so cute.

Heather, I am so sorry about Pierre. I am glad that you are able to find him a new home (without kids!).

The cakes are cute!

Here is my attempt at the simplicity top. I used some $1/yard fabric I picked up at the end of last summer. It is ok, except I could see how it totally wouldn't work if you had a bigger bust. It seems like it is made for a junior, a little tight over the hips. I bought the prettiest Michael Miller fabric that I wanted to make matching dress/top for Megan and me and this will not be the top. I guess I'll keep trying.

Sorry for the face, I was trying not to sneeze! I guess I should have asked Jacob to stand up to take the picture. And you can't see him, but Scrappy is right on my feet (I cropped him out!).

Your assessment of the pattern is the same as mine. It isn't cut for a big bust and is narrow at the hips. You look much better in yours that I did in mine :lmao:

The cakes are amazing :worship: :worship: I am so envious. That is something that I have always wanted to do, but haven't got up the courage to attempt.

Weight Watchers. I too am a fan of Weight Watchers. I've been doing it off and on for about a year and a half. I no longer attend meetings, but follow the program on my own when my weight starts creeping up. It is time for me to jump in again. I would like to lose 30 lbs, but 15 lbs is much more realistic. I must admit that seeing all of those delicious looking cakes is making me want to be a bad girl though. So far I've only had a weight watchers blueberry muffin this morning

To explain the Styrofoam "cake". In bakeries when they put a cake on display the inside is styrofoam usually wrapped in plastic wrap. This makes a cake form that can be decorated like a real cake without the inside going bad. The icing is real and the airbrushing on it is real too. The Western cake was on display for about two weeks until someone throw a huge peice of concrete through the huge front window of the bakery.

I remember when I was about 8 or 9 my mom took a class to learn to decorate cakes. For the final, they had to bring in a "cake" they'd decorated all on their own. With 5 kids, you can imagine she did most of the work at night so imagine our excitement the morning we saw that beautiful cake thinking we'd get to eat it after the class... and then our utter disappointment when she told us it was done on styrofoam!!! We felt betrayed and appalled that she's waist such good frosting on something we wouldn't be able to eat.

BTW - Anyone watch Ace of Cakes on The Food Network? I love seeing their creations. It makes me so tempted to try making some fondant to experiment with.

I just got an email from Deann, tnmom25. She is ok!!!!!! I'm so relieved to find out she is ok, I'm crying! As most of you know, Deann lives in Tennesse, where the tornados hit the other day.

Here's her email:

Thanks for letting us know, I was wondering about her.

These are cute. Ever since you guys started talking about making these for yourselves I started thinking that I might like to have some for myself.

That is really funny:rotfl2: I have to make an extra every time I have an order because my family gets really upset that they don't get one otherwise;)

I LOVE Ace of cakes. I :lovestruc Duff.... (don't tell DH!)
