Disappointed in wi-fi service/losing wired service

I must say that I am less than thrilled with the quality of the wi-fi service this trip (BWV). There are times when it is incredibly slow and other times when I have to wait 5 minutes to even connect. I am now using my travel router plugged into the modem in my room and that works fine. The tech support line told me that each room is limited in bandwidth use so I cannot blame a shared connection with someone else using it too heavily. I was also told that the wired system is in the process of being taken away. For sure my new iPad will be 3G.

Jean - I'm right there with you! We are also in BWV now (at the far end of a hallway) and the resort Wifi was nearly useless. We are using our home router and doing great over wired. It will be a 'game changer' to lose the wired connection. :(

I hope they don't take the wired away. Out at DL they have both.

The access point is located behind the TV cabinet every few rooms. The speed is all over the place and the internet servers are somewhere in the UK.

The hardwired connection was provided by the previous contractor and it's speed is slower than before and I was also told that it will soon be disconnected.

I suggest that we send a email to Member Services but I don't expect anything to change since the change was a Disney thing and not a DVC thing.

The tech guy told me I had a router in the room and I found a Cisco hanging on the back of the TV stand/cabinet in the living room. This is the model: http://www.speedguide.net/routers/cisco-dpc3925-docsis-30-wireless-gateway-with-embedded-927
So is this a combined wireless router/modem? As you can tell I know zero about this stuff. It has ethernet jacks so I plugged my Airport Express into this one instead of the other modem I have always used and the AE is working fine. If this is the access point then my AE should continue to work, right??

I'm seriously thinking my husband and I will return to staying at the Dolphin for this conference in future years. If so, we'll be in a mode of having too many DVC points as conf travel is the primary reason we come to Orlando. :(

Correct, but I was told that not every room has one. The new connection uses the TV coax cable, the old connection used the phone wires behind the sofa or table next to the sofa.

So will we still have the ability to hook up our own travel router? Im going to VWL in March, so really need to know this.

i would like to know too if this will work in every room. I really do not like using a public wifi, and prefer my secure router.

Okay, Bill. I called tech again (I am becoming a pest). MOST rooms have an access point but there are some which do not, so using a travel router plugged into the access modem/router is NOT always possible at BWV. I guess I will waste my time and write to Member Satisfaction to see why there continue to be problems with wi-fi. We don't seem to have this issue at other venues when we travel.

What I find annoying about the wifi is that it thinks I'm in Brazil!

Mapquest.com automatically pops up with a map of Sao Paulo.
American Airlines assumes I want to depart from Rio.
I can't play 'Who wants to be a Millionaire' online, because it's only available in North America.
I can't watch a cbs.com tv show I missed because it's not available in South America.
I'm sure other little things will pop up sooner or later.

In December the IP address that we were assigned was from the UK, not Brazil. I wonder where else we will be from? :thumbsup2

We are here now and I am using my router. The wireless was much slower than the wired was, so I just got our router out of our locker. It still works just fine. I hope this option will not go away.

Be thankful. I often find the hotel-provided wifi to be slower than my 3G phone-as-hotspot, let alone my 4G MiFi. This is across several brands, in several cities.

It worked perfectly for us at Saratoga. We switched to the boardwalk and we were having problems with losing the connection. We called tech support, the lady was very impressed I knew how to find my IP, lol, and they fixed it for us. Our laptop was trying to connect to an access point that wasn't working properly, and then tried to connect to another one, but it kept bouncing back and forth. I guess they disabled the one that didn't work? But after that we haven't had any problems. Not quite as fast as the internet at home, but my husband has been able to play his online star wars game.

We were at VWL for the marathon, at the end of the hall and the wifi was usable for surfing but not for VPN. Brought my AP with and was able to plug into the Cisco router. It seemed like the 1br and 2br units had the routers but the lock off studios didn't, guessing they shared with the adjoining 1br.

Not too worried about the security issues with the wifi since most sites I used are SSL encrypted any how. And those that aren't are just news and weather, etc. however it'll be nice when the get the kinks worked out.

Been here since Saturday and the wireless has been terrible. Just plugged into the old wired port and it works fine. Sorry I didn't bring the router I usually do to set up my own wireless.:confused3

Just back from OKW. I had my travel router along and wanted to use it, but when I connected it like usual, I was asked for my Key to the World card number. Never had to do that in the past. Since I didn't want charges to show up on the room charge, I chose not to give that information and reluctantly used the free wifi instead. Would really prefer to use my secure router. Has anyone given their room key number, and were you charged for using the wired internet? Just wasn't up to the hassle of getting the bill straightened out this trip, so like I said, I didn't attempt it. I really hope they don't get rid of the wired connection.
