I mean really?

Since they couldn't get what they wanted with the Tebow ad on their first try, now they are sprewing that the commercial promotes violence against women. RIGHT, where was Terry's comment when Warren Sapp was arrested over the weekend.

How disappointing. :sad2:

Did the commercial with Betty White getting tackled promote violence against women? :lmao:

Yeah, N.O.W., like most advocate groups, make some strange statements from time to time. Regardless of whether you agree with the stance Tebow's mom makes she is just relating her story. If you are going to promote choice you need to support all choice, even when it is the one she made.

Sometimes these organizations get a bit to concerned with their agenda and forget the individuals that they represent and that they don't all fit into convenient molds. I don't see how anything in the ad can be construed as violence against anyone.

NOW is becoming more and more like PETA.

While their underlying cause is admirable, their execution of spreading their message is nauseating.

Wonder what they would have to say about my 2yo tackling his sisters.

Are women now too dainty that any contact will be considered violent?

As firedancer said--ALL choices must be supported. I don't support the feminist movement for many reasons--and one is that, often, I don't feel that my choices are ever respected and that I'm a disappointment to the movement. They aren't fighting for me--they are fighting to prevent women like me who they feel...didn't make the right choice.

Good call on Betty White--promotion of violence against women AND the elderly.

When I was in college I took a class called inter-gender communications which was about the role of gender and the formation of gender roles. I thought it would be about talking to girls but it wasn't :confused3.

Anyway, one of the things talked about during the feminist movement was the transition of gender constraint as opposed to the lifting of them. So many people in the movement looked at women who chose to stay at home and raise families as holding the gender back as opposed to making the choice that fit them. Instead of having the constraint of having no choice but stay home it shifted it to having no choice but go out and work. It then stabalized a bit more in the late 80's and early 90's to more of a "whatever is right for you" movement.

It was a fascinating class but it goes to your point that if you are going to promote choice it has to be all choice, not just the choice a particular group wants. If you are going to look at it that way you can call pro-life people choice, they just want you to choose their choice. The same goes for equality. Equality means always equal, not sometimes equal or only equal when convenient. Often movements forget this as well.

excellent point. I also, do not support the feminist movement for much of the same reason.

I took a few Women's Study class while I was in college. I was definitely in the minority.

I have a friend who is a big feminist--she had her PhD in some version of women's studies and teaches much course work on that topic.

She's a pretty out there feminist--but then she hyphenated her name when she got married. She said that it is funny that some of her feminist friends had a cow when she did that. She's pro-choice on just about anything you can imagine and she got grief on her name even.

It seems even feminists are not immune from the judgement of their peers. I'd say that seems so typical of women--but then again, that would be looked at poorly.

I just don't like that it's called the National Organization for Women when they don't represent the different viewpoints that women all over the country have. To me, if they really were a stage for all women, they would be more conscious of the comments they make.

They should perhaps change their name to N.O.A.R. - Nat Org for Abortion Rights - to better reflect their true purpose.

Heck, if you didn't know what that commercial was about you could think she wanted Tim to drink more milk or something. Totally benign.

When I was a lot younger before I had kids I thought that what they said was right no matter what. Now it is like there are certain things a man should do and certain things a woman should do...ex. I would much rather stay in the house and cook or clean or what ever than to go outside and work on the car, I have zero interest in learning about a dang car...but this is just me.

anyway I have to agree tho that woman have different choice and for different reasons..why does it have to be so black and white???

"Crazy me, I thought we could agree that the Tim Tebow pro-life ad was a nice, family-friendly commercial that in no way could be deemed offensive.

I was wrong.

There’s always a lunatic fringe, ready to scream and yell.

Say hello to NOW president Terry O’Neill.

“I am blown away at the celebration of the violence against women in it,” she said. “That’s what comes across to me even more strongly than the anti-abortion message. I myself am a survivor of domestic violence, and I don’t find it charming. I think CBS should be ashamed of itself.”
No, you should be ashamed of yourself for not having a clue. This is why our country is so polarized _ because nitwits like you are so obsessed with YOUR POINT OF VIEW that you have no tolerance for anyone who may disagree with you.

Her “point” has to do with Tebow playfully tackling his mother Pam during the spot. Tebow is a football player. It’s easy to connect the dots. The two exchange smiles.

You call that violence against women?

Fortunately, most pro-choices were rationale and gave the commercial thumbs up.

“Wow, this is so benign,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser of the Susan B. Anthony List, which supports candidates who oppose abortion. “It’s a story of a mother’s strength. That is the message that I saw. ”

That’s the message I saw, too. Too bad O’Neill tuned out on Super Bowl Sunday and left Planet Reality for an alternate universe."

She really is out there.

That ad during the SB was much ado about nothing.

N.O.W. is just using this new angle to get some more free publicity. They also need to realize that being Pro - choice includes the choice to carry the baby to term. Choice implies that you can do either A or B. If there is only 1 option, then it isnt a choice.

If they really wanted to b@#$% about something violence related, you are all right that it should be the Betty White commerical (which was 1 of the best ads, btw) and not the Tebow ad.

We don't get super bowl commercials here but I heard most were pretty low key.
