My friend got an email about a job opening at DTD with a very aggressive timeline. You can see full details on savepleasureisland.blogspot.com

Thanks to the DIS for posting the initial rumor. I mentioned it to my friend and that sparked his memory about that email.

I don't believe it is at all part of a "bold new vision", but a away to gain some quick income from a location that Disney did not foresee a tenant any time soon. I'm certain this is just the traveling exhibit which has been going around the country for several years now, and is temporary.

It would be more interesting to learn what the expected timeframe of the exhibit would be.

I think it's kinda cool.

I dont forsee it as being permanent, but I think using it as a permanent exhibition space is a pretty cool idea.

There are a lot of traveling exhibits that pass Orlando by because our museum is a bit "small"

There is a Hermitage Guggenheim Museum and the Bellagio Gallery of Fine art in Las Vegas.

This exhibit of Diana's dresses has been circling the globe for years. It's proven to be extremely popular.

I guess I dont understand the negativity towards this.

It's not like anyone is being forced to attend. This isnt a reuirement to get into any of the theme parks.

Well, my partner and I will *luv* this, (ahem) But, I can't imagine anything that would bore young children more... So, on that level I understand the negativity.

It seems like an odd mix. But, I look forward to it.

I'm not really sure what I think on this.

On one hand, as Kevin sort of leaned towards in his post, this is cool for Orlando residents. People who can see Disney every day and like some different stuff from time to time.

I, myself, would like to see this exhibit, because I'm sure there's a lot of facts and history tied into this. I even dressed up as Princess Di for a school project once because I admired her.

However.

For those of people who go to Disney only once every one year, two years, etc. I don't really see that they will be taking time out of their trip to go see this. It's hard enough as it is to fit everything you want to do at WDW into your vacation schedule.

Which doesn't mean it can't be there.

I'm just saying that I don't think non-locals will be attending that much.

So I guess I think it sort of depends on who Disney is trying to target with this exhibition. People who have seen all there is to see at Disney, or people who are coming there on their not-so-often vacation? If they are looking for out of town/ out of state tourists to pay to get into it, I don't think they will see the response that they may have been looking for.

How about the Sunglass Hut, Hoi Paloi, Rosa Cigar Store, that Art store (that used to sell $3,000 guitars) or House of Blues....all within 100 yards?

We always say Disney is not just for kids.....

I'm not offended by anything said....and cant see a reason to be.....I just see this as something that might appeal to some guests.

I guess I see it fitting in pretty well in an area of Disney not necessarily aimed solely at kids. Bongos, WGP, HOB, Cirque.....while all family friendly (except maybe HOB on concert nights)...none are specifically targeted at adults.

And as for drawing locals.....Disney tries to do that quite fequently with their Play 4 tickets etc.

I've read other threads in other areas of the boards and I'm surprised at the negativity...almost animosity towards this idea.

Again....Ithink it sounds kinda cool.....not as a permanent fixture...but more as a an exhibition space for different things.

Isn't it better than an empty store front?

I should clarify my rolling laughing smilie in my post above as laughing at the "bold new vision" reference, not at the idea itself, since I actually WOULD love to see this exhibit and would definitely do so. I'd probably drag Phillip along too, although he'd be less enthusiastic.

I have always had strong feelings about Diana. Diana was my age. I got up at 4:00 a.m. to watch her get married. I cried the night she died (ironically, on my birthday and along with someone named Dodi - different spelling, but still odd). Phillip and I got up in the middle of the night to watch her funeral service live too. I've read all of the books, the best of which, IMHO, was The Diana Chronicles by Tina Brown.

I would hope that exhibits might rotate in and out though, so there'd be different things to see in coming years.

Point taken, it's just such a large area (if memory serves) that maybe something more 'kid friendly' could have gone in there.

I don't know. It's not permanant, and I look forward to it... So, it's a plus for us.

And besides, I guess this makes Diana the newest 'Disney Princess'.

My immediate negative reaction stems from the sheer inappropriateness of that particular venue for this particular exhibit. The flashy, trendy, pop, tweenie ambience of DTD seems beneath the dignity of an exhibition that - I assume - revels in the reserved yet stunning beauty that we associate with Diana. Excuse me, where may I find the tribute to England's Rose? Just past Planet Hollywood, between the cineplex and the video arcade. Even Main Street USA would be a better venue, let alone the Grand Floridian or the UK pavilion.

Moreover, the clientele at DTD is, on average, dressed for maximum comfort in high heat. I don't relish the idea of videos being shown around the world depicting "uncultured" Americans filing by the Princess's gowns in their tank tops and flip flops. I hope the exhibit has a dress code.

Did they move it to the Bellagio? It was at the Venetian and the Guggenheim closed on May 12th 2008. I know the Bellagio has a fine arts gallery in it. I loved the Guggenheim.

I can't wait to see the Diana's dresses! It sounds so cool.

I am sure there are people who would like to see it, I just dont happen to be one of them It wouldnt be the type of thing I would normally go to and certainly at least for me wouldnt be something that I would think fit in with a Disney vacation. But I suppose that is the beauty of Disney, so many things and such a diverse group that flock there every year that I am sure this will appeal to plenty.


Not sorry to see the Virgin store go, place was insanely overpriced IMO. I wonder just how many different things will go in and out of that west side of DTD as it tries to rediscovery an identity.

We did the same Dodie! I have always had a bit of a soft spot for her and would probably make an attempt to see the exhibit if I were visiting. Might I also ask, what little girl doesn't love a princess dress? I can see lots of little girls liking the exhibit as well. My 8 year old son, we he is another story...
