DIS Shareholders and Stock Info ONLY

With these numbers you almost have to hit $1bililion to be financially worthwhile (they don’t make movies to break even).
In the old days, I think Disney would have been fine with breaking even on BO alone. Then the VHS/DVD sales and ancillary products would be all profit. Now it feeds D+ subscriptions, how much that truly brings to the bottom line on a per movie basis we will probably never know.

I believe the pandemic low for DIS has now been breached...crazy market times we are living in.
And if you own any banks, just don't look today😭

Discovery+ shouldn't be underestimated as it has seen tremendous growth in a short time.
One of the traits of a commodity is that it's all the same - it doesn't matter if you by it from company A or B, the product you get is 99% the same. That can't happen in streaming as all services have mostly exclusive content.

I haven’t done either. I also saw Lightyear in theaters, with my kids. One of the few to do so.

I didn’t appreciate the “stick it to cons” vibes the movie and it’s promotion had though. And I wasn’t the least bit surprised that it bombed.

Let’s take another example, Baymax shopping for Tampons. This is something families want to spend their entertainment on? You really believe this line of thinking is a boon to TWDC?

Too many of you are so focused on yourselves and your idyllic vision of how others should think and act you are failing to see the reality around you. Most people don’t want to be bombarded with social issues at every turn. This isn’t even really up for debate. Look at the two biggest movies of the summer and you’ll see I’m right.

100% correct. This is why Lightyear bombed. It will eventually extend to all of Disney if they don't get better leadership.

Box Office: ‘Thor 4’ Nears $500 Million Globally, ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ Digs Up $900 Million

Marvel’s superhero epic “Thor: Love and Thunder” is nearing the $500 million mark at the global box office, a great result after only 10 days on the big screen.

Over the weekend, the fourth comic book movie to center on Chris Hemsworth’s hunky God of Thunder generated $60.1 million from 47 territories at the international box office and another $46 million domestically for a weekend tally of $102 million. With those ticket sales, the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe installment has earned $264.6 million overseas and $497.9 million worldwide to stand as the sixth-highest grossing Hollywood movie of the year. Though “Love and Thunder” will certainly end its global box office with a sizable sum, it’s concerning that the movie is quickly sinking — by roughly 63% internationally and a sizable 68% domestically — in terms of week-to-week ticket sales.

Hulu Drives More Subscriber Growth for Disney Than Disney+

Hulu has emerged as Walt Disney Co.’s DIS 1.69%▲ fastest-growing U.S. streaming service, just as the company loads up on more adult-focused entertainment in a bid to expand its reach to a wider variety of viewers.

New subscriptions to Hulu have outpaced those of Disney’s flagship streaming platform, Disney+, in 18 of the past 24 months, and total new subscriptions to Hulu have exceeded those to Disney+ in each of the last six quarters, according to data from subscriber-measurement firm Antenna.

Hulu’s subscriber gains come as Disney leadership is under pressure from investors to keep up the momentum in Disney+ subscriber growth. Disney Chief Executive Bob Chapek has set a target of signing up between 230 million and 260 million Disney+ subscribers and achieving profitability for the streaming business by September 2024, a goal described as unrealistic by some shareholders.
Some analysts and investors have described streaming as a drag on Disney’s share price, which has fallen by nearly 40% this year amid a broader pullback in media stocks. Disney+ has 137.7 million global subscribers as of the most recent quarter’s end. Hulu’s streaming-only service has 41.4 million subscribers, while Hulu Live, Disney’s $70-a-month live-TV streaming product, has 4.1 million. The streaming segment overall lost $887 million in the most recent quarter, and its losses have totaled more than $6 billion since the launch of Disney+.

I always wonder about the stock market "experts" who analyze this stuff based on something like subscriber growth.

I am currently on a .99 a month Hulu promo for a year and a $.99 per month for 6 months peacock promo but at full price I'd have no subscription....yet analysts look at me and others like me as a sign of positive growth.

How many dis plus subscribers are on free, subsidized or packaged plans? If they actually analyzed that there would be a bloodbath.

Any decent analyst should be looking at average revenue per subscriber along with subscriber growth. That would take the low and no cost subscribers into account. During the "stay at home" share price surge, for some reason the analysts forgot the basics...

I am always skeptical of a 3rd party measurement firm and their numbers. In saying that, I never understood why 'analysts' focused only on D+. Total subscribers (ESPN+, Hulu and D+) is the number that matters.

Movies with very high opening weekends often fall a lot because so many people saw it the first weekend, and such high numbers aren't usually sustainable. Lower drop-offs would be indicative of a lot of repeat viewings, which is good, but it's not really that concerning with Thor as a lot of the side-MCU movies don't get as much repeat business. It's still plenty healthy, jsut not top-tier for the MCU and some other of the biggest blockbusters.

Netflix Loses More Subscribers, Vows to Speed Up Revenue Growth
Streaming giant in earnings report says it expects to gain 1 million net new subscribers in current quarter

Netflix Inc. NFLX 5.61%▲ suffered two consecutive quarters of subscriber losses for the first time in its history as the streaming giant faces continued pressure from stepped-up competition and high penetration in major markets.

The company lost 970,000 paid subscribers, fewer than the 2 million it had expected to lose. Netflix estimated it would add 1 million net new subscribers in the current quarter.

Revenue came in lower than expected, growing 8.6% to about $8 billion, while operating income fell 15%. Netflix said foreign-exchange fluctuations weighed on revenue and profitability, and projected that revenue growth would slow to 4.7% in the third quarter.
“Our challenge and opportunity is to accelerate our revenue and membership growth,” the company said in a letter to investors on Tuesday.

8 more days till the fed announces GDP... I am not sure if we are out of the woods yet. This feels like a pump and dump scenario but the institutional investors are playing with far more info than us so who knows.
