Dis Photo Board Assigment, July, 09: Summer and Patriotism

We went to the "Independence Day Jubilee" last night. I'm partial to my Tamron 28-70 but in hindsight should have brought the 18-105. I was happy that I felt confident in what I was doing. I was one of the few in the park using flash when it was light out and making sure it was off once dark.:rotfl2: My fireworks pics ended up out of focus but still much better then years past when I had no clue what to do.

A couple of my favs:

I love the enthusiasm on her face in the last shot! And oh! that gorgeous red hair!
Thank you! :goodvibes I know composition wise it's a nightmare but just loved her expression and excitement. And I get stopped on the street and asked about that hair! :rotfl:

Our town had a little parade and celebration on the town common this morning. We went down after the parade. The kids had fun on the big blowup slide's. They had some old cars along with those guys that dress up in outfits from the mid 1700's. It was a nice little celebration.

Later tonight we're heading out to meet up with a bunch of friends from some fireworks a few towns over...

Here are a few from this morning:

Taken at this morning's swim meet. I have much better shots, but I don't want to post other people's children. KWIM?

We had a really good fireworks show last night, but I was juuuuuuust slightly off focus and they are a tad blury. I did snap a few of the kids playing with their night sticks, but it was just way to crowded where we were to really play around....

There were fireworks going off all around the valley, legal and illegal. These were at a casino a couple miles away. It's sister casino was shooting them off behind us so I had to choose between trees or houses, the camera was already pointing towards the houses...:lmao: I missed the grand finally because as mentioned in the light painting thread I had to also fend off the neighbor kids to keep them from knocking over the tripod.

We didn't make it to the marina early enough to get a really good spot; i.e., with the water in the frame. On top of that, the streetlights in the area were not turned off for the show, which forced me to compose my shots a little differently than I would have liked. Still, I think I got some good photos of the fireworks and also of my wife and son at the beach in the late afternoon /early evening. Downloading now.

There were at least three fireworks shows in the area. I could see parts of one of the others in the distance as we waiting for ours to begin. Next year, I'm seriously considering finding a spot on the beach some distance away and shooting one of the other shows with a longer lens. We might have been able to simply stay on the beach where we were and get some shots from there. But we don't have anything longer than a 200 mm lens, and I'm not sure how well that would have worked from that area -- no way to know without trying it or being good with math and having some knowledge of where they were actually being fired.

Panama City has a charming and interesting downtown area; we had to park and walk two or three blocks through it to get to the marina. At a less-crowded time and in late afternoon, it would make for a good photo walk. But I don't think I'll go there to shoot fireworks again.

We ended the night with a boat ride to see the fireworks. I am not happy with my firework pics in general. I am still learning how to use my new camera to take firework pics. I did think it was really that you could see the red, white and blue reflection in the water.

All the photos are looking great thanks for sharing them. This was a great idea.

Okay this is going to confuse some people, but for me---along with home brewed iced tea, grilling and the icecream man---Yoohoo signifies Summer. I have it once a year and that is on July 4th at the annual family picnic. My Grandparents bring it over and if you get there late you'll be out of luck, it gets snatched up like it is going out of style!!

As far as editing in Photoshop, I did a little recovery for the highlights, boosted the saturation from 0 to 3, upped the contrast from the default in Adobe Camera Raw from 25 to 30(ish) and added a vignette that was feathered to 250 (not sure if that's the right way to say that or not). :goodvibes
