Dis Photo Board Assigment, July, 09: Summer and Patriotism

Picture taken last weekend. Our family tradition is to celebrate the 4th on the island. Sadly, a tragedy struck. Our thoughts go out to the community, volunteers, and families.

Oh, I used to LOVE YooHoos! Great pic and Fab story Ann.

I'm amazed they even sell it anymore---I can't imagine that many people drink it regularly and I don't think our one time each year is enough to keep Yoohoo in business, but who knows!! The weird part is, I don't know if there is actually any "milk" in the Yoohoo chocolate milk...reading the ingredients reminded me why it's not something I keep the fridge stocked with

I think YooHoo is labeled as a "Chocolate drink". I love it every so often. I used to get it as a kid a lot. YUMMY!!!

Oh yeah, pictures. Here are a few I took over the weekend. If the EXIF looks a little "weird", I was using my P&S.

The fire works I shot in manual. These are the only 2 that came out half way decent. The rest were pretty blurry. We were sitting too close to where they were shooting them off. It was my first attempt at shooting fireworks with half a clue as to what I was doing.

Our local beach does fireworks every Thursday, so when I get my DSLR I hoping to get some practice so I'll be more prepared for our next Disney trio.

Snagged a few shot of the local fireworks display last night.....

Thanks a lot, Roger. You are absolutely correct. It's been a little while since I've shot any fireworks and I'm looking forward to capturing the new show at DL next weekend, although I will miss the old RDCT.

I've gone back and added some settings to each shot. I used the D300 along with cable remote release and my trusty Siggy 18-50mm f/2.8. Using full manual, most of the shots were along the lines of 3-5 seconds at f/11. However, once I go the feel of how they were firing the shells, I shot a few much longer. You'll see one of them is a 15.3 second exposure to capture a few different shells in the same frame. I thought about using a black card/cloth to cover the lens in between but it really wasn't necessary. And, we were situated in a perfect spot, roughly 100 yards from the launch site.

Thanks Danny. Have a great trip.

I took these on Memorial day at a local church grave yard that has graves dating back to the early/mid 1800's. One of the things that caught my eye was how many tomb stones list military service. Reading the stones can prompt quite a few questions. I don't think I took a photo of one particular stone but I will on my next visit. The grave was a man who was an officer in a unit from a northern state of the Union army. He is now buried in a small southern town that was at the time in the middle of no where. How and why did he end up in this town? I would love to know the story. :confused3popcorn:::)

Here a grave that has another story.

Lots of vets are in this church yard. The church has to be getting close to 200 years old. And the yard is small. There were quite a few flags on the graves on Memorial Day. I went early in the morning right after sun rise. It was very quiet. Peaceful. Beautiful. Fitting.

I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to make a kind of last minute 5 day trip to Sanibel last week.

Sunset taken at J.N. Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge last week on Sanibel Island Florida:

Not a patriotic shot but it says summer to me.

What could be more July 4th-ish than....eating contests!

I'd post more, but I don't want to overcrowd the board :)

Many of the convenience stores in our area still sell it. Though I see it in a bottle not a small carton like the one you posted.

I've recently seen it in 7/11, Store 24 and a few mom and pop stores. The grocery stores still sell the small cartons in 6 or 8 packs and I've also seen larger cartons, maybe 1/2 gallon size.

(Not the greatest shot, but I like it because it shows the bonfires, fireworks, and a bottle rocket going off beside us, as well as some glow thing my DD was swinging around - about the closest I got to Light Painting that night. :rotfl: )

These were taken using a tripod, remote shutter release, my 18-180@ 40-60mm; except the first one, which was taken with the 24mm f/1.8, clearly too far away), and Fireworks mode (which broke down to f/9.0-10.0, 4secs, ISO100).

Love this shot.

Thank you! They were actually the inspiration for bringing back the assignments! I was driving by them for weeks thinking what a great picture they'd make. (I guess that's when you know you're really bad - when wanting to photograph things is driving you crazy. )

This is the only decent firworks shot I got. It was taken at our neighborhoods fireworks on July 3.

Here are some from our neighborhood parade and picnic on July 4.

The pictures on here are amazing, I love looking at others work and wondering what inspires them to shoot the pictures they do. Even more I love hearing the stories behind the shots. This thread is a great idea.

I have a few to share, we made it to Baltimore/DC area to visit family the week before the 4th, we went to DC to visit a few of the sites down there.
