MY COMPUTER JUST CRASHED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I mean it seriously CRASHED! :scared1: I was working on something for DH (editing some pics he had taken for his step brother and it froze up...) I was trying to shut down to give it a rest when the hard drive started clunking (ka thunk ka thunk ka thunk) then the screen went black and now it says "Operating System Not Found"!!! I am FREAKING out! I have so much crap on there! Only my pics were on an external hard drive! Everything else was on this 8 yr old piece of crap! My resume!!!! OMG! My cover letters! My spreadsheets! Our taxes! EVERYTHING! My door signs! We only had Word on that computer... So I just kicked DS off of his superpowered one to check email... But no Word on his for some reason... I don't know why. But I am totally LOST! WHY NOW?! I was already worried about the darned washer! WHY does everything wait for you to be unemployed and can't afford this kind of dumb crap.:headache:  :sad2: :sad1: :confused3 :scared1: :upsidedow :scared: OMG.

And what is a bobo??:confused3

 sorry to hear that Annie - I have heard that sound a few times. Not nice. Nice computer people can come you your house (cheaper if you go there) and they take all the junk/necessary files off for you). Listen to auntie RJ: breathe in, breathe out.

is it dumb to ask if you back things up regularly - like everyday?

Looks like son has just lent you the computer you bought him for a while. Kids spend too much time on them anyway. :3dglasses

CAKE!! Thank you CHERYL!!! It is my favorite!!

and since I have lost 50.5lbs..I think I will treat myself to a piece instead of the sad Lean Cuisine i brought today!

I hate you

oh, and you had to throw in that ".5", didn't you.

Annie!!

Call the Geek Squad!!:car:

But I am glad your pictures were on an external hard drive! Our computer makes a similar sound and I have been thinking of putting my pictures on an external drive. I think maybe I will go to Best Buy tonight.

I hope maybe Betsy is right and if the computer cools down maybe you can boot it up one more time and get everything off of it that you need.

<fingers crossed smilie>

Betsy....

why you gotta post disturbing pictures of clowns here? And who is this Bobo the clown? He seriously makes me think of the creepy clown from "It".:scared:

:clown:

Clowns scare me too...

well..i DID lose it...That was Sunday..it might be more by now!

Back-up?! :rotfl2: That's a good one!

DS has a super macdaddy computer (it's a Dell XPS gaming machine) we dropped like $2K on almost 2 yrs. ago now I guess - but it doesn't have WORD on it.:headache: It's in the basement 'cuz we put in a lot of built-in cabinets / desk etc. when we finished it. Problem is the darned thing is so BIG it wouldn't fit under the desk so we put it in an audio cabinet - but it runs really hot...so we have to leave the door on the cabinet open when it's on...

ANYWAY, thankfully, DH is an IT guru...so I called him this afternoon with an SOS call and told him to come home prepared to do a disaster recovery!:rotfl: So he comes in & trys to boot my old clunker and he just looked at it when it started clunking. He was like "Ummmm...that's really NOT a good sign". Duh. I knew that much. Anyway, he took it all apart & we vacuumed it a bit & he tried this & that...it wouldn't boot AT ALL....neither of us can remember FOR SURE but he thinks he maybe DID put some of "my documents" onto the external hard drive - won't know until we get a new computer tho. He also thinks it might be in a CPU problem not a hard drive problem - which he said would be better - at least I'd have a chance of still having some of my stuff...

So he trotted off to Best Buy. We usually buy Dells...but have also had Gateways. So he just called me from the store - I am trying to look stuff up online for him about various models...they don't have much in the store in the way of Dells...mostly with this AMD hard drive that he doesn't like - he only wants to buy Intel processors...so I THINK he's buying me a Gateway! There was one for like $540 and we had $40 in reward zone certs. so only $500!They all come with Vista these days which apparently sucks and crashes a lot so he says he can get XP on it later. The impt. thing for now is to see what if anything can be recovered.

I think I just heard him come in......

Fingers still crossed for you Annie.

We to run a Dell and have had Gateway and do not like Vista. I read somewhere you can still get XP installed on a very few items if you go direct through Dell or HP.

Better get DH on that project. I want a laptop since we are wireless here now.

I hope you are able to save your documents!

OK, so where can I find this BoBo the clown guy? He better hope he doesn't run into me in a dark alley somewhere!:rolleyes1

OK, so DH says it's gonna be a long nite (basically he was like "go away"!:rotfl2: ) Since we didn't need all of the accessories for it he got out of Best Buy for $415!! Not too shabby. I mean it's $415 I didn't WANT to spend but...... Even tho it's not an expensive box he says it's still gonna beat the crap out of my old 512 hard drive! :rotfl: If we hadn't waited for it to crash we would've configured something thru Dell & ordered it but...for this situation we had to take what was in stock! I think Gateway is OK. It will have to do anyway.

But he says it's not looking good for being able to recover my docs. He hasn't pronounced it dead yet, but it's definitely in a life threatening coma!! He got the external hard drive hooked up but we had NOT backed anything else up on it except our taxes from '04, '05 & '06 (no '07 yet). (Lesson learned Miss Cheri!) When he took out the old hard drive & tried to put it to the new computer the new one wouldn't even turn on!:scared: Not a good sign. He says since I have emailed a couple of resumes I'll be able to go thru my sent folder in my hotmail to find copies of my resume and cover letters and copy them back into Word (whew)!! But everything else is probably toast.:sad2: OH! And once he re-installs the Photoshop Elements he says my door signs & graphics are in a folder in my pictures which is on the external drive!:woohoo: So. One bright spot - I didn't lose that work. But I'll have to re-do my spreadsheets in excel & stuff.

We might find someplace to send the old drive off to for recovery tho. He had some pics on it from his brother the last time he was in Iraq & stuff that were never put onto the external drive...after 8 years who knows what else is on it. :confused3 It might be worth the recovery.

OH Annie!!!! What a mess! Best of luck to you guys.

Love the sign, Besty, and congrats on the tickets. Very cool!

I have exhausted every place trying to find a dress suitable for the VR. Everything I have found was either too formal, would look adorable on my granddaughters or an awful color. Today I gave up and went to Jo-Ann Fabrics and bought material and a pattern I liked and I will make one. After all, I did do dress making for many years and Betsy didn't have a bought dress until she was about 14-15 so I will do this! :wizard:
Spent the morning in the dentist office getting fitted with a temp. crown thanks to what I thought was a rock in my salad but was part of one of my teeth. Thank goodness no root canal is required.:cheer2:

:wizard: You can do it! I so envy that talent!!

:scared: Anne - be careful of those salads!!

So glad no root canal is required.:thumbsup2 :wizard:

Anne, sounds like making your own dress is a great option. I'm sure it will be beautiful (and it will certainly be a perfect fit!)

Annie--good luck with the computer. My laptop died only a couple of months after I got it. I lost a LOT of data from it, so after I got a new hard drive for it (thank you HP for sending me a brand new hard drive) I installed a program that will back up my system. Now I just have to remember to back it up regularly (I purchased a FireLite external drive to back up to as well.)
I did lose quite a few pictures (including Trevor's first day of school waaahhhh) and ALL of my music that was on my computer, but a local computer shop was able to get most of the stuff out of my documents folder (a pretty easy recovery I'm told.)

The other day my laptop overheated and freaked out. I thought it was toast again, but after I took the hard drive out of it and cooled it off, when I put it back in the system booted up okay.

Get a good back up program, and a portable drive to back up to, and back up regularly. Losing pictures and documents is awful!

Sue Ellen

Morning ya'll. Well, we were up until midnight setting up the new 'puter. We were so tired when we finally went to bed we left 1 cat accidently locked in the basement and DH left the light on over the kitchen table all nite. We were out of it. I feel disoriented - everything looks different today! DH has decided I should try the Vista operating system until I have problems. Yay. Just what I want. More problems. I don't know what we'll do about the old hard drive. All is lost. 8 yrs worth of docs in Word & Excel. Some softwares that were downloaded versions that we will have to download again if we want them (and I'm sure pay for them again). This computer was set up with a diff. profile for each of us. He only got me going last nite. Still has to do DS... I also had a lot of folders set up in Outlook. Those are all gone. (purchase confirmations, recipes, had one for vacation confirmation stuff, job search stuff etc.) I always moved informational type emails into folders in case I ever wanted to reference them for something. (I am a pack rat on the computer too - but a somewhat organized pack rat!:rotfl: ) Stupid thing is DH is an IT guy so he KNOWS better than to not have a backup and we DO have an external hard drive. But DH and I couldn't come to terms over what to back up onto it so we never did it. I orig. got it for my pictures and I didn't want it gunked up with EVERYTHING. Just the important stuff. He wanted to be lazy & copy EVERYTHING. So it never got done. But I am very glad that a lot of our pics are in albums on Shutterfly and that since going digital I had everything on this external drive.

We looked online briefly for a place to recover the hard drive info. Sue Ellen - what kind of computer place did you go to exactly? They looked VERY expensive online - like hundreds of dollars!! DH tried to take it apart - he thinks now that one of the heads inside is broken off 'cuz of the ka thunking sound it makes and when you shake it there's a tiny rattle. But there was one screw he couldn't get out so he couldn't open it. That's probably a good thing 'eh?!:rolleyes1

Mom..I told you about this dress..it has a removable sheer jacket
