Dis Dr.s DW needs your help....

the night before this all started I started taking 30 mg of prednisone (down from 40mg) but I ended up taking the extra 10 anyway.

If you have been on prednisone before without any issues, then it probably is not a side effect of the predinsone. If this is your first time taking prednisone, then it could simply be a side effect. I know that I have no desire to take prednisone again after my one and only experience with it. But, as with any medication, it effects each person differently. I am just one of the lucky ones who does not tolerate it well.

Well, good luck to you. I hope you find the cause and that it is nothing serious.

While I do not think the DIS is a place to be doctored since you are already doctoring, it doesn't hurt to ask. Now if the DIS was the only place people went to for help, that would be different. JMHO.

The pain started as you started the prednisone taper? I'd put my money on that. I take prednisone often and I always have sever joint pain in the legs as I start the taper. By the end of the night I usually can't walk.

some times it seems the pain is radiating from my ankles all the way up to my hips. at one point I would have described it as excruciating shin splints! No musclular pain, no swelling and no redness though just sharp stinging pain, sometimes in spasms. thanks you guys..

I am going to go way out on a limb here, msel but my Mom had the same exact issues. Horrible pain in her ankles that radianted up her legs to her hips...she went through many many tests and was diagnosised with Spinal Stenosis. She has spasms as well. She may require surgey.

I was on prednisone for the same problem about 2 months ago and weaned off of it successfully (unfortunately the rash came back) but I have had reactions to cortisone injections. I've never had a reaction to any other steroid product, topical or ingested.

Thank you so much for your help. I know that I will need to see my own doc but it's good to go in with more ideas, since basically it's a matter of elimination at this point.

Pain 20 out of 10 with all else normal - Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (also known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome) would be my first thought.

It's a "rule out" diagnosis. You have to have all other things normal so it's important to see the rheumatologist as your doctor suggested to make sure it's NOT something else.

It sounds as if your pain probably has something to do with the steroids, but I thought I'd mention this anyway. A few months ago I got a systemic infection which started from a dental infection under my crown. Within a couple of days I was hurting so badly I was in tears. It started in my ankles and knees, but within a few days every joint in my body was aching so badly I thought I would die. My knees, ankles, hips, shoulders, wrists, fingers, every joint in my body was killing me. Within two days of seeing my doctor and taking a strong antibiotic, I felt great and had no more pain. I hope yours will turn out to be something that simple. :goodvibes

That was my first thought too! but my doc didn't seem to think so since I had JUST started the taper that night. I will be sure to keep mentioning it though. It would be nice (not from a pain perspective) if it wasn't something more serious than withdrawal!

have they done a lime disease test? I would ask for one after more serious things have been ruled out.

It's on the list of blood work, along with Parvovirus and a rheumatoid panel, among the usual.

is she on any statins?

In my 8th week of being on Lipitor, I woke up one day and my hips were in so much pain I could hardly get down the stairs.

After I was off it, I returned to normal.
