It's good you'll be staying in the hospital with your Mom, Laurie. I would, too. Just so someone's there all the time in case there's something she needs and nobody's around (shouldn't happen, but could, if there's not enough help on, or the nurse gets tied up with a sick patient, aide calls in sick, etc). A friend of mine had surgery a couple of years ago (not where I work, thankfully) and she complained to me later she was ringing the light and ringing the light and nobody came. Understandably frustrated. Tip: you will be wildly popular if you bring some goodies and share them with people who are especially nice to you and your Mom. :)

So funny when you were talking about the culinary demonstrations at F&W. Here's what I was thinking when I was reading it: We love F&W, too, and I think some of you know my DH has a culinary degree and works in the food industry, so he's pretty into it. When you graduate as a chef, you get a Chef Medallion (like a lanyard but it's a ribbon and a gold medallion with the name of your culinary school) you get to wear to culinary events. He, of course, stuck it in his drawer after he got it, and I pulled it back out and hung it on his bulletin board - hey, it's something to be proud of, right? So every time he goes to a professional event, I say, "Why don't you wear your medallion?" and - you got it - he won't wear it. :headache: So I :lmao: when I got to the later part of your story where your DH refused to wear his YOAMD lanyard - not surprised there!

This spring DH invited me to an event with him that was nearby and again, he wouldn't wear the darn medallion. (I was tempted to throw it on myself I was so :headache: but I didn't.) It was actually kind of funny, he took silly pleasure in teasing me about being a "rookie" because I didn't know to "pace myself" (He did warn me, but the lobster ravioli and Angus sirloins were just calling out to me!) Once I began sampling, :cloud9: I was quite full in just a short period of time and missed out on some of the later offerings. Next time I'll know better. (He used to work for a big company and always went to these things with others; now he works for a small company so usually goes by himself. Works out well for me if I'm available. :thumbsup2 )

Very, very nice about winning the YOAMD passes. It is nice to know that every once in a while, kindness is rewarded. Man, Disney is so good at what they do, aren't they? :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

Laurie - How fun to win pins and lanyards! That is the one prize we really would have loved to win! We got dream Fast Passes a couple of times (both at MGM) but no lanyards. In August we didn't even see other people with Dream lanyards. Kind of strange. :confused3
I'm sorry you won't have a tree this year. :guilty: It makes me sad not to put ours up because I have a HUGE collection of Hallmark ornaments. The thing is, if the tree falls over (which it would) my ornaments would break and they can't be replaced. Well, maybe through eBay, but i don't want to have to go that route.
Maybe we will put up a tree with no lights and only ornaments that won't break and see what happens.
Mom hasn't mentioned her Thanksgiving escapades lately. It is still too far away for her to know for sure how she will feel.
I hope your mom's surgery goes well.

Our RFTC is the 18th. I am hoping DH might be able to get the day off so he can take pics. :)

Merry, it is wonderful that your DD is up for National Merit. Glad the SAT went well. Will she possibly take it more than once if there is time?

Yes, she could take it again in December if needed. But her scores on standardized tests are usually high. Since she feels good, I'm not too concerned. She ususally says she's not sure how well she did, so she may have hit it out of the park. :confused3

I have to say I feel renewed. Y'all were right on the money.

Looks like we know stuff. ;)

Glad to hear that everyone enjoyed the trip. I got a tear in my eye just reading about it. Hope you'll post some of the pictures.

JSG, we'll be in your neck of the woods this coming Saturday, but it'll be a whirlwind visit. We're coming down Saturday morning to go to the OU/Texas game and driving back that night. Hate to have to do it that way, but DD can't come with us. She has play practice. Too bad we won't be there longer, it'd be fun to meet sometime.

Merry - How fun! I hope you enjoy the game!
We are going to do everything in our power to stay out of the way of the football fans! :rotfl2:
It would be terrific to meet you and your family! Definitely let us know when you will be here for more than a fly-by. :goodvibes

DH is off Tuesday and Saturday next week, so he will be coming to RFTC. :thumbsup2 Tuesday we think we'll let DS blow off school and go to the State Fair. :rolleyes1 He is off this Friday for "Fair Day", but all of the middle and high schools in the district are out that day. They all get a free ticket, valid ONLY Friday. That means the fair will be packed with roving bands of unsupervised teenagers. No thanks! :scared:

My boss gave us tickets that are valid any day, and we think Tuesday will be a good day to go. I just hope it doesn't rain.

Linda - It should be a good week for photos! :rotfl:

We'll enjoy it... if we win. Unfortunately, that's not a given.

I don't blame you for staying out of the way of the fans. Wish we could too. I hate all the game-day traffic. It's miserable that we have to drive down and back in the big wave of fans. That part's never fun.

:flower1:~~~***GAGWTA sistas***~~~:flower1:

Elizabeth- I didn't like ativan either, so I stopped. Same with decadron. But I did discuss it with my onc before I quit. I'm so glad to hear your dh's condition has improved, that's wonderful news!

Ann- Sounds like you had fun with your sisters! Wouldn't it be nice if reality didn't hit so quickly when you get home? I had to grocery shop the night I got home too, in a thunderstorm, naturally.

Melissa- Glad your dd felt good about the test. I would love to have his website, thanks for the info. College board has prep tests she can take for the PSAT too. I'm going to have her do some over the weekend.

Sha- I'm glad you got to go to the race and meet the other GAGWTA sistas! It's always an amazing time to share...

Laurie- You made me smile with your trip report. :goodvibes I knew it was the right thing to do, but I'm glad you were able to really get into it. I did see lots of older couples (it was either older couples or preschool families!) and wish hubby and I could do that.

We have a weekend next month that the kids are on a church retreat and I would love to go away but I doubt it will happen. I did start looking into ideas around here and it's a funny coincidence after reading all the posts about food from you and Linda...I found that a large mansion/inn nearby hosts monthly food and wine dinners with a different themed menu each month. I am waiting to find out the menu, but the theme is California with wines from the north and south, yum.

Yes, I'm glad you are able to be with your mom. I usually have someone with me, but not overnight and yes, more than once I have experienced being ignored when I'm calling for a nurse.

Our RFTC is the 19th. I have been up in the air about it with everything that has been going on, so I haven't signed up yet. Hubby is doing well and actually went for runs twice this week. My UC has improved but I am having terrible joint pain, especially in my ankles, so I just don't know if I'm up to it, we'll see.

:grouphug:

Merry, the reason I mention taking the SAT twice is that at least for college admissions, which may not be an issue if your DD stays local where ACT rules, some colleges take the best math or reasoning score from each SAT sitting. I don't have a clue why but DD18's SAT scores on her two SAT sittings varied a good bit, the first time she scored a lot higher in math, the second time her reasoning was much higher. Her combined score from the best of both was sweet.

Rhodes college even had a name for this. . . superscoring. Made me think of supersizing your order at a fast food joint.

Laura, I hope there is a trip in you and your DH's future. After all that has been going on with you, you really need it. We are still reaping the benefits of our trip around here.

No way would I leave mom alone overnight. I always think the nights are the worst time for fears. Also, while DH stayed with me overnight for my mastectomy, mom was there for me that first night sfter reconstruction when they made us swelter in unmentionable heat. I did not expect this, but apparently they do it for the first 24 hours to help the flap regenerate the blood flow.

I thought I had some terrible fever (I do think my temp was way up . . . I mean it was hot hot hot in that room) and of course they had me wrapped up lie a mummie.
Mom hung in there with me, called the nurses, got me ice, etc. It was a long night but everything looked brighter the next day (especially with the help of the morphine button), until a nurse "tricked" me into trying to sit up. DH stayed with me the next day, but I was better once we weren't sweting bullets.

I would not overdue for the RFTC. What about sitting in the survivor tent during the race?

Linda, what kind of "treat" would be best. I bought stuff to make Mrs. Field's chocolate chip cookies but I am afraid with DH working throughout the weekend and the soccer games scheduled, that I may not have time to do those.

I thought about pound cake from a good bakery and there is always chocolate.

I have to say that we did get a lot of pixie dust sprinked on us. When we went on Peter Pan with fast passes one day, the window was not open yet for one of the passes for some reason. The CM just traded it with another. Also, when I balked at the first room they assigned us at Boardwalk (too far from the boardwalk, on the opposite side from Epcot), they magically came up with another that was strategically located close to the hot tub (how did they know)

There were countless other special moments. Maybe I am just more tuned into it but I appreciate how they treat special needs kids, everyone. It does not hurt that it was not hot or crowded. Everyone is in a more agreeable frame of mind when things are rolling well.

It also helped that I was organized, aremed with a folder with everything in chronological order as we neede them. . . directions, reservations, etc.

Thanks to Laura we got a stupendous rate on a van-$85 for the whole week. I still can't get over that one.

It was also fun to get to see the new Centomporary DVC villa models at Saratoga Springs. The CM's in there were so fun and funny. The 1 and 2 BR units have a to die for shower in the master. . . more than one shower head (one on the ceiling, one lower. One of the CM's even pointed out that it was big enough for two. I think that is when I said we were celebrating our honeymoon rather than our anniversary (Freudian slip I guess). That brought the house down.

I guess all the bridal couples we saw during the week just got to me.

Hey after the way the stock market is going, all we may have left to enjoy is a little humor now and then. My new motto. . . dance while Rome burns. . .

GAGWTA, ladies! :)

Mom had her 4th Taxol yesterday. She said she feels much better without the Ativan. Next week is just a Neulasta or Neupogen injection. She said she filed a 66 page claim with her cancer policy, so that should be an interesting project for some poor sap at the insurance company. She said those Neulasta shots were $6400 each! :scared1: Good thing they are covered!

Laura - I am glad your DH is feeling better! It is good the hear your UC is getting better. I hope the joint pain improves soon!

DH's biopsies came back fine. He goes back to the gastro Dr. in a few weeks so they can talk about what to do next. Right now he takes meds every day. I imagine they will either cut back on the dose or tell him to try to wean off completely to see what happens. He is having a lot of knee pain this week. Almost all of the guys he works with go out for knee replacement after they have been on the job for awhile. Hopefully he can make it awhile longer before he has to do that! :scared: He isn't supposed to take ibuprofen with his UC meds, but he sneaks it now and then because that's what I take for my back.

Wow your DH is awfully young to face knee replacement. My sister had to have one about 12 years ago due to an accident at work. She was told at that time to expect it to wear out and be replaced.

I hope they have improved the technology these days.

What is his profession?

He delivers chips for Frito. He usually has grocery stores, but the past 2 weeks (and next week, too) he has convenience stores. For whatever reason these convenience stores are really tearing up his knee. With grocery he does a maximum of 4 stores in a day (but usually just 3), with convenience he does about 10 stores in a day. He worked 60 hours this week.

I had a friend who had knee replacement surgery. It was a difficult procedure (actually the rehab was the hard part) but it transformed her life. She feels so great now...wishes she had done it sooner!

Glad your mom is getting through the taxol! I too was shocked at the cost of the Nulasta shot. Crazy!

It seems to be a hazard of the job. His job is to cover routes of other guys who are out on vacation or medical leave. Somebody is ALWAYS out having knee replacement. DH has only been there for 3 years, so I don't think his knees are shot yet. This is actually the first time he has ever complained about knee pain. He says the repetitive up and down motion from stocking the shelves wears out everybody's knees. He has knee pads but he never wears them. Not sure that would help internal wear anyway. :confused3

Anybody have fun plans for the weekend? Besides Merry going to the TX/OU game? :)

I have to take DS for his FluMist this morning. He is supposed to be going to a sleepover tonight, but so far it is the most disorganized thing I have ever dealt with. We'll see how that plays out.

GAGWTA!

Wow, I always considered that a sitting down job did the most harm to one's body over time.

I never thought of knees just wearing out from up and down motion on those hard floors.

Not to mention the aches and pains.

Anyway, I hope that the reduction in UC meds go well. I would think this would be a weaning type of thing.

Your mom sounds like she is doing great. I am so glad to hear that.

Thanks! I do think Mom is doing pretty well so far. :)
Hopefully they will move DH back to the grocery side soon. In addition to tearing up his knees it screws up his afternoons so he isn't able to pick DS up from school. I can go get DS, but it throws off his groove for homework and such to go back to work with me after school.

How is your mom doing? Is she keeping her spirits up?

Thanks for asking, yes she is doing pretty good. She was obsessed for a while with an area on her leg that won't heal. Now after two doctors looked at it, she seems to have relaxed.

She seems more forgetful and not catching everything people say. She does have some hearing loss. She is resisting going for a hearing aid while my sister who has worked a good bit with people in assisted living environments is encouraging the hearing aid. My sister thinks and I agree that she has missed some of what was told to her at doctor visits that made things far more complicated when doing the preadmit stuff.

Under the circumstances I think she is doing well. Yesterday was a bit trying as my good for nothing brother in Costa Rica again called her telling her he had no money.
She is about at the end of her rope with him, my other siblings and I have moved even farther beyond that. So she had to go to 2 places before finding a place open to wire money to him.

The thing with my brother Jim is a continuing issue that I guess one day will be mine. Mom recently changed her will to have his share of her estate put in a trust with yours truly as the trustee.

Fasten you seatbelts, it is gonna be a bumpy ride.

I am betting he will suddenly find the wherewithal to call me when I am in charge of doling out his share which has beyond his scope for almost 3 years.

I guess I am lucky to have two other wonderful siblings. Jim has always been a thorn. Now he is a 42 year old thorn with two dependents and a wife in a third world country with a serious gambling problem and who knows what other dependencies.

One thing I won't do is do: wires to him for mom. Not gonna happen so I hope Jim makes yesterday's infusion last.

Quick note - had our own hospital experience this week when DH spent two nights on my unit via the ER after having some chest discomfort. Bought himself a cardiac cath which showed his coronaries were clean. He had an appt with a cardiologist anyway given his brother's death this year so now the cath is behind us and the news couldn't have been better. They still want him to work on risk factor reduction, so this happening was probably a good thing for our family. I was with DH the whole time but he was in such good hands that I could concentrate on being his wife and not his nurse. Interesting experience. ;) If it's possible, I'm even more proud than ever of the good work we do every day. I don't know how I'm going to thank everyone yet. Wanted to let you guys know. (It's always something, isn't it?) BTW, when we got the good news, all I could think was, "This calls for a celebration!" :wizard:

It must have been surreal living this from the other side. Glad to hear the excellent results.:thumbsup2
Better still that it takes worry off your plate after the recent loss of your BIL and the potential family history concerns.

Uh oh, I think I sense a WDW trip on the horizon. Do you want me to send you the EPCOT wine and cheese programme?

I would love to have his website, thanks for the info.

Sorry I was so slow getting back to you. His website is chadcargill.com . Chad is such a nice guy and he's really good at what he does. His classes are amazing. He has a study guide and the calculators on his website. (And no, I don't get a commission.) ;)

Remember that in the SAT and PSAT incorrect answers count against you. In the ACT, wrong answers don't count, just the correct ones. So on that test it's best to at least guess. Guesses on the SAT/PSAT should be educated guesses.

Yeah. Guess it depends on how good she does. I think she's staying in our part of the country. May be going back east for graduate school. It's possible we might have her take it again to get the superscore. Thanks for the info.

Sorry he had to do that, but I'm thrilled he had good news.

Our whirlwind trip to Texas was uneventful. We ended up not sticking around at the fair for very long after the game ended. It was a disappointing loss and we were ready to head home. Long ol' trip to make twice in one day.

Yeah, I hear you about the disappointing losses.

LSU got clobbered by FSU at FSU last night. It wasn't pretty.

Looks like I WILL make the Mrs Fields Chocolate Chip cookies to "treat" the nurses at Women's Hospital tomorrow(it is a from scratch recipe using ground up oatmeal). It is a large recipe but it will be nice to have extra for goodies around here with my brother Tom flying in, and DD18 and DS20 coming in from college next weekend. I also found some precious cotton candy pink ribbon looking candy corn at Target that I think might be a hit at the hospital. And of course we have chocolates.

Gotta love Target. I also bought a pink ribbon shark thingy that is supposed to be good for cleaning tile. We will see.

Merry, speaking of tile floors, how are your floors coming out?
