i hope this has not been recently answered as i have looked thru as many posts as i could possibly fathom and could not find this answer.

i know if i buy resale i can not get all the conceirge and "collections" that buying direct offers. no biggie here.

BUT i was wondering if you buy direct can you use your points to stay at any of the non dvc hotels on the property?

ie: can i book a stay at port orleans riverside or the polynesian resort?

i'm trying to gather all info to present my case to hubby in the next couple of months-lol. but think this answer will definately make or break my decision to buy direct or resale.

thanks in advance!

yes you can, but many members feel that that is not the best/highest value for the use of your points.

Resale points can't be used to book other Disney hotels outside the DVC resorts, so in your example you could not use those resale points for those hotels.

Do not know the answer to your question but most people would say it isn't worth it anyways. The exchange range is not very good between DVC and non-DVC on property resorts. It would probably be more cost effective to rent your points out and do a cash reservation at the resort of your choice.

Hope this helps somewhat.

As already noted, yes you can book at moderates and deluxe resorts (that don't have a dvc component) with a direct purchase. Here's the 2012 Point Chart for the WDW Resort Hotels so you can see the point requirements. There is also a $95 transaction fee that must be paid to book at a moderate or deluxe.

yes they can, so long as the purchase of those points occurred prior to March of this year.
The OP was asking if this were possible if points are acquired directly from DVC.

Just thought if it might be a good idea once in a while as my parents will only stay at Port Orleans Riverside as it is their favorite resort. I am hoping to go to Disney with my children every year- but in the back of my head I would love for my parents to be able to come too every once in a while and stay with us. They only go for the weekend every couple of years so honestly just trying to see if it would be a viable option to consider. They just adore the grounds and love to walk it and just sit and watch out along the river...:)
As for my kids and I- I can't wait to dvc hop!

Tell your hubby that we stayed many times at both the Polynesian and Riverside before we purchased DVC and no way would we choose either over DVC. If your DH is still reluctant then maybe you can talk him into renting or doing a promotional cash stay in a villa. I would bet that he will see the light.

That's why I said "resale points" twice in my response, but I guess I should have been more clear about being able to use direct Disney points for those resorts. I tried to cheap out on my words and didn't cover both sides.

Sorry for the incomplete answer.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE POINT CHART- MUCH APPRECIATED.
Sometimes making old people happy is a little bit worth the extra money as time is very precious and you can never ever replace a memory.
JMHO, though.
I'd rather spend them on my parents and make them happy at POR than renting out points or not using them all.

Once in a while seems fine to me- just not all the time-lol.
Thanks again:)

For the once in awhile trip I'd still buy resale and then rent the points on the occasional year that your parents would come along and want to stay at POR. Or - just pay cash for that weekend and then move over to DVC. And you might be surprised about the response if you did convince them to stay with you at a DVC resort. What was once a "I'll only stay at POR" might become "I'll only stay at OKW!". :thumbsup2

The difference in price between resale and direct for an occasional weekend every few years isn't worth it IMO when you could figure out some other way to stay at POR.

Totally agree with this - Even SSR provides plenty of place to walk and watch the boats go back and forth to DTD and OKW is even better as far as I am concerned. The first time you might rent them a room at POR and then stay at one of the others yourself --inviting them over to visit. Once they see the places they may have a change of heart. You can probably get a cash price for the POR that would be better than using points for it in the long run. I know the idea is to be together but we did this and now the family that always wanted POR is very happy at any DVC we stay at. You could also ask them to just try it once and if they don't like it then the next time they are back at POR.

Good luck -- by the way just how old are they?

that actually sounds like a good idea. both parents are in their late 70's and dad has a bit of a knee problem- but they still get around real good;)
they both just love the mansions over at POR- but sounds like a good idea to put them over there while the rest of us stay at a DVC and let them see where we are staying. and maybe i can talk them into taking a couple tours of other DVC resorts and see how they feel about staying somewhere else the next time we plan a trip together. great idea- the thought never ocurred to me.it might just change their mind
:thumbsup2
