Dinosaur - how scary is it?

Basically, this is the same question I asked the other day about RNR. I'm terrified of most coasters at 6 Flags, but liked Space Mountain, and in general found most Disney rides to be tamer, than 6 Flags rides. So, is Dinosaur closer to Space Mountain or 6 Flags? Should I brave it?

Help!

Spoilers

The ride bumps you around a fair bit, as it simulates you driving across rough terrain. The scary bit is towards the end in that you get a loud, visual surprise (don't want to give it all away just in case you only want to know so much) which if you look at the ride photos does make people jump and scream. It's dark and loud, but is not a roller coaster.

In the sense of being "roller coaster' scary it isn't at all. It is dark, very loud in spots and there are surprises that scare some people. It is very fun though so definitely brave it!

I wouldn't personally compare this ride to a roller coaster. It is really different. It has no big drops or corkscrew sideways turns. It is fast, it is dark, and it is bumpy. Just not in the same sense that a coaster is.

It's not roller coaster scary at all, but it is funhouse/haunted house scary. You'll love it! ::MickeyMo

I closed my eyes by the end of the ride. But then again I am a big wimp!

Oh good! Is it to scary for the kids - 5 and 7?

My oldest son was so scared of it until he was of the age to distinguish between reality and fantasy. He really thought the dinosaurs could eat him.

You know that picture they take at the high pont of the ride? When DD was 5 ours looked like this: DD in middle can't see a bit of her, me leaning over her and DH leaning over both of us. DD is not scared of the dark or loud sounds - but the special effect at the end of Dino had her pratically hysterical for 10 mins. Of course she is 6 1/2 now and can't wait to ride it in Sept. :confused3

It scares me to death! I won't ride on it again ;)

It's not a rollercoaster at all, those are a piece of cake to me (esp Space Mountain which is incredibly lame in comparison to most coasters), but it's loud, dark, there are some surprises, and SO jerky and bumpy.

My 10 year old boy did not like it. However he rode it a couple of times. It scared him enough that he wanted a middle seat. my 8 and 4 year olds were not crazy about it either. But they also rode it a couple of times. Me, the 34 year old thought it was okay, but I do not like pitch dark. Even though it was not totally dark, it definitly was dark enough....But also, I rode it a couple of times....

My experience is like Trayletha's - our pic came out with me smothering DS (3) and not even realizing what was going on around us - I was too busy making sure DS's head didn;t get ripped from his body! I found it VERY jarring - not so much for adults, but for kids - their neck muscles I don't think are strong enough to keep them from hitting their head on the side 'bumper' thingys. DS also could not reach the bar in front to hold on to so that didn't help. So, in future I would not take DS until probably 7yo ish but for adults I don't think it is scary at all. I definately felt like a bad parent for taking DS on it - although he seemed fine (no crying or anything). I imagine he was wondering why his mother was trying to smother him :teeth:

I was scared to death of that ride. I was pretty much rolled up into a tight little ball. My 10 yo DS liked it but closed his eyes alot and my 14 yo DD thought it was great.

I was hiding my head in my little sister's lap (I was 23 at the time) and screaming but it was all in good fun. I definitely would go on it again, in fact I just had a dream about this ride two nights ago. It is definitely in my top 5 rides at WDW and even though the visual effects are scary, the ride itself will not make you sick or dizzy which I worry about more. I guess for a child it might be a little scary depending on the individual. I think people tend to want to close their eyes because you feel like at any moment some huge dinosaur is going to jump out at you. But that's part of what makes the ride so great in my opinion. It really is an experience, not just the feeling of going fast or flipping upside down like in other "scary" rides.

Ok folks, here's a related side question (maybe should be its own topic, but I doubt it) We're on our way back in september, my ds8 loves this ride and cant wait to ride it again. My ds4 has never ridden it but now is chomping at the bits to ride it based on his big brothers review and seeing it on various videos. Knowing that videos don't really convey a rides intensity, Should I warn ds4 exactly whats coming before we get in line, possibly scaring him more than the ride really would,(hes not real skittish and understands about animatronics) or should I play it cool and let my and big brothers attitude reassure him. Just wondering. I have seen kids be fine in line but start freaking after someone gives them the ol' "now you know nothing can hurt you on this ride." speech. You can see the kid forming the thought "Hurt me!!? that had'nt occured to me. Activate freakout circuit!!"

I don't know about eveyone else. I love this ride :flower: . Yet everytime I've been on it, the small children are ready to wet there pants. If your going to put a small child on this ride they better be adventurous, and I think I'd still do it around the end of your trip. You may have a hard time getting them on anything else. I still scream eveytime I ride this ride. :rotfl: Tina

The problem with this ride where kids are concerned is that VERY young kids can physically ride it, since it's really not much more physically demanding than the Pooh ride. But the mental intensity of the ride was too much for my DD. She easily passed the height requirement when she was 3, so I took her on it, knowing absolutely nothing about how intense the ride was. The CM's really did nothing to suggest it might be a little too intense for a 3 YO. But then my DD looked at least 5 at the time, at least in regard to her height. I really regretted taking her on this, and it upset her.

But if you have an emotionally more mature than usual child, then he/she might enjoy this. But it's really up to you to determine this, since you're child will probably be physically tall enough for the ride by around the age of 4.

Dinosaur is my FAVORITE ride in all of Disney World. I wouldn't call it a roller coaster at all. It does jerk you around a lot and is bumpy but its no where near as fast a roller coaster, and there are no drops. You go down a small slope but you do it slowly. DH and I like to ride it without holding on so we bounce around more.

I am probably the worlds biggest scardy cat when it comes to rides. I was panicked on Goofy's Barnstormer and won't ride it again. :rotfl: Its true! Hated Space Mountain and won't even try any of the other roller coasters. Going to high on Dumbo even spooks me. So I say that if I can handle Dinosaur than anyone can. (at least adults)

Play it cool! His imagined fear is alot worse than the actual ride is any day! It's how we go my little 9 yo nephew onto some of the wild coasters at Cedar Point last year, and after the initial shock...he a certifible coaster/thrill ride junkie. He also loves Dinosaur!!
