Dinner- what to wear???

Hi there:
I'm posing this question hoping that someone who recently returned can shed some light on what to pack to wear to dinner.

My DH doesn't really want to dress up, so how casual can he be without raising eyebrows.

My DS (8) will probably wear shorts and a button down shirt

My DD (11) has a dress she can't wait to wear and a few skorts too. Will this be ok??

Me, well I'm probably the biggest problem because I really don't want to bring dresses. Would capris fit the bill???

All information will be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks!!

With the exception of formal night I saw lots of women in slacks or slack suits. Now they even allow nice jeans , but that is a HOT subject with a lot of people. I have worn a casual top and tropical skirt which was comfortable too. But colorful tops and black slacks look nice and you wont be embarassed. My DH does not like to dress up much either. But he wears khaki pants and button up collared shirts. some are tropcial disney shirts, sometimes a solid color short sleeve dress shirt. Sometimes he will wear slacks and a collared shirt. But unless it is formal night any clean outfit will do. Pants or slacks are just fine. You will fit right in and not feel out of place. On pirate night you can even dress like a pirate at dinner. that is really fun.

We literally JUST got back from the Magic. I can tell you that capris are FINE. I took a good hard look at the women at dinner, and here's the best advice I can give you: Look through the pages of a Chadwick's catalog, and you'll see exactly what you will see on the cruise. Comfy, casual, and pretty clothing.

I saw no women in dresses aside from formal/semi-formal nights. Most women wore white, black, or khaki pants/jeans/capris and a summery shirt. Many wore actual sweater tops because the restaurants are chilly.

It's always a great excuse to dress up a little. Who really wants to put on a pair of jeans in the Caribbean anyways?? There are all kinds of fun sundresses and capris. My hubby always wears the same pair of khakis and a different polo shirt. They have nice ones in the ports. He always gets one in St. Thomas. Check out our pics below for some of our dinner attire.

OK, I will address the DS's options. At 8 yo IMO he is old enough to conform with the adult dress suggestions. The only things that DCL requests not be worn in the dining rooms are shorts, tanktops, & swimsuits. Things haven't changed since jeans were permitted starting in 2005.

Capris are great. Summery skirts, too, which seem popular right now. I won't let DD7 wear shorts, but I will let her wear a skort or capris. I think her entire on-board wardrobe will consist of bathing suits, skorts, and matching tops, except for the one "dress" I force her to bring for semi-formal night. (We're ditching formal night for a 3-hour spa trip!) I have a DS3 who I plan on putting in khaki or navy pants each night with whatever shirt. If he and DD go to the Club after that, we'll switch into shorts real quick, but I want to impress upon both of them the whole dress code notion since they have one at school, too. DH will take two sets of khaki pants with him and a ton of polos or short sleeve button downs. We always end up doing a 5-minute stateroom visit to change before hitting the shows and then everyone is happy if need be.

Our last cruise my husband took a suit for formal night/Palo. In Palo he actually felt overdressed as every other male guest in there was in a polo shirt/slacks or button up shirt with no tie.... This was for dinner, not brunch.

My Mother In Law and her husband are coming along with us on our next cruise. If you look up "Grumpy old man" in the dictionary there should be a picture of her husband. lol He wears jeans every day of his life... Mom in law is going to force him to get and take a pair of slacks for formal night/Palo... other than that, jeans it will be.

My hubby might take a sport coat, but likely he will be in slacks and nice shirt/tie even for Palo this time.

Relax, have FUN!!

**edited because I am a really bad proofreader. lol

Is it acceptable to change into nice Bermuda shorts (and polo or other collared shirt) after dinner and attend the shows? When not at work, my preferred uniform is shorts and sandals.

Khakis and polo shirt, or even a tropical shirt is fine. Did that myself two of the three nights. Wore a shirt and tie one night, just because.

You can wear what ever you want to the shows. :)

We just returned from our "WONDER"ful cruise yesterday!! I wore capris and a nice top each night, and my son wore khakis and a shirt, mostly button down with a white t-shirt underneath. I made sure to buy him very nice dress sandels, so he would not wear his sneakers to dinner, guess what I saw everything from flip flops to sneakers on people. I was kinda upset that the one night it was suppose to be the dressy night and a man came into dinner with jean shorts. muscle shirt and flip flops!!! I kept saying that's not very nice, he should of at least had the decency put on a shirt with sleeves!!!
But really to answer your question I saw everything from suits to shorts.
Don't fret over it , and by the way, when people say only take 1/2 of what you think you need, they are right!! I thought I packed light, I had 1 sutcase and my son had 1 suitcase and we still had clothes we never used!!! I will know better next time!!!

Thanks one and all for your responses!!! DH is not happy about the no shorts, but he'll adjust. I'll just put a couple pairs of khakis in for my DS. My DD has her dress and many capris so she is fine. Now if I could just get myself settled. I bought a new bathing suit today, but that won't help with dinner. LOL

Thanks also for mentioning that many of you change before the shows. Is there usually a lot of time between dinner and the shows?? We have the early seating(which with the new scheduling I'm not sure what that actually means. ) I guess I'm curious as to the start time of the later show.

I have always been a planner, but thanks to these boards, my planning has reached a whole new level. As much as I can't wait to go!!! There is always that let down when it is over. Last year after our trip I booked our 1st cruise within a week of being home. I need to be planning a Disney trip or I just can't function. LOL again!!!! This time I may rebook while on board. Anyone pick a date in 2007 with the intention of switching to 2008 when the dates are released???

Thanks again!!!

HAVE A NICE DAY!!:)

I haven't thought about needing sweaters....Do we need them for the dining rooms and shows? How cool does it get in the evenings? Thank you disers for all your help to newcomers to the site & DCL! I eat/sleep/work/talk and dream DISNEY! I have driven my whole family crazy with it all. And the best part is I've planned this whole trip for almost a year and they don't even know we're going on a cruise. We only have one more week :cheer2: !

The late show starts at 8:30. There isn't alot of time inbetween dinner & the show. Our kids always wanted to see the characters & go to the shops to trade pins then meet DH in the theater for the show.

Some people are chilly inside so they do bring sweaters. I have brought them but have never used one.

You know how cold an air conditioned room can feel if you've had a little too much sun....? I'd bring a sweater, you don't need to wear it if you find the temperatures fine for you (we were fine, but others get cold).

Isn't it funny how the moms are usually the last to buy stuff for themselves :confused3 ??? I said the same thing to my husband today, my DH and DS are more than prepared with swim stuff, tees, polo's, khakis, sandals, shorts, socks, shoes, I could go on and on with the new stuff they got :rotfl: ! Me on the other hand..... a few bathing suits, and shirts..... but I really need to get a ton of new stuff! If only a trip to the mall were dedicated to ME only  !!!! For some reason that NEVER happens???? Went to the mall today for "MY CRUISE SHOPPING DAY", and ending up buying only stuff for them :confused3 ???

Is it okay to change clothes to go to the Golden Mickeys? I wasn't sure if most people would still be dressed in formal clothes? Thanks!

dreamscometrue, which cruise are you on? We're doing the Wonder July 2, and have an 11 year old DD too.
