Dinner party/recipe help!

Just a thought, what about hitting up a fish fry after Confirmation. I know you said your DH is allergic but could he go and not eat the fish?

He could, but he's already doing that every Friday in Lent except for confirmation night because we're both serving (and our kids are bussing tables) every week. Our parish fish fry is the school's second biggest fundraiser so families are expected to put in some time, and somehow we ended up as regulars. Workers eat free and after being there for 4+ hours neither of us wants to come home and cook dinner so he's been eating their mac & cheese and side dishes while the rest of us enjoy the fish.

The timing really doesn't lend itself either - mass is at 5:30 and the fish fry ends at 7, so while we should have time to get over there while they're still serving it wouldn't be a meal we could linger over and socialize.

It's news to me that Catholics can decide what is meat. The description you gave - flesh of land animals - is what everyone considers meat. So chicken is meat. Pork is meat.

It was news to me when I first heard it too. But apparently some bishops were more lenient than others, or some members of the congregation made their own rules.

They changed the no-meat rule to 2 days Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. That's how it is in my church. The same church I attended as a child, when it was no meat on any Friday. It was also the same church that I had to pin a tissue to my head if I forgot my veil/hat. My 6 brothers had a field day with that one.

Ah, yes. I had completely forgotten about the emergency kleenex as a hat solution. One time my daring aunt just wore a fancy headband to church, and I'm sure people were gossiping about it later.

(I mean she wore just a headband on her head without a hat. . NOT that she wore JUST a headband to church. :scared1:)

The no meat on all Fridays still stand in our archdiocese, though fasting is only required on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

I don't practice anymore, but I still follow this guideline.

I've heard some people claim that the no meat on Fridays during Lent, or the AW or GF fast doesn't apply if you're at work. Not sure if that's really true or just someone's pick-and-choose interpretation.

As far as I know, a bishop can issue a dispensation absolving people from following these guidelines in the case of natural disaster, severe weather, or other unusual circumstances.

The bishops or the congregation can't really make the rules. All Catholics over the age of 14 are supposed abstain from meat on the Fridays during Lent. This has been the standard since the days of Vatican II. They are also supposed to fast (no eating between meals, smaller meals, no meat) on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

I know in the past when St. Patrick's Day fell on a Friday in Lent, the Archbishop of New York City would sometimes give a dispensation to allow people to eat corned beef since St. Patrick is the patron saint of NYC. But it wasn't automatic, and it didn't happen all the time.

Our...very progressive... Catholic church still definitely requires abstinence from meat each Friday in lent :)

If I was that tight for time, I would do the pizza thing OR I would make a reservation for 12; somewhere local that serves a Friday Fish Fry. Most of those are fairly reasonable and in the end, wouldn't be that much more than making everything yourself. And, if you have any non-Catholics, they can order meat! And your hubby can order salad or a meatless pasta dish.

I think I would do the pizza thing too since you have such a busy day. Why stress yourself? Order pizza then you just have to make a salad and have some great desserts, and you can have the apps while waiting for the pizza.

First, you have a great appetizer course planned! Second, use your strength and make your crock pot Jambalaya. Maybe add on a really good mac and cheese from the oven. You could put that in the oven when you arrive home, it wouldn't take that long to make. Then go for the desserts.
