Dinner - Is it always a meal??

Last night I made blueberry muffins for my dinner. To me that's a meal .

Okay, these always confuse me. For us, "dinner" is what you eat around noon, so I was wondering why anyone would have a full meal at that time of day.

On the other hand, supper is a full meal almost every night for us.

We've done the same sort of things. Cereal, sandwiches, something quick and light when we aren't very hungry. During the summer a few times we had banana splits for dinner. That was a big hit on a hot night! :) :upsidedow

Funny you say this... I had cereal tonight...there are many night DBF or I don't want to cook so we just have fruit or cereal...

One of the things I am doing to try to lose weight is to cut down the size of my dinners. Sometimes, it's just a peanut butter sandwich and some fruit.

Last night I had peanut butter toast for dinner because I didn't care for the beef enchiladas I made and tonight I plan on having toast again because my DH loved the enchiladas and asked if he could have the left overs for dinner (he also had some for lunch today) I don't have to make dinner? You betcha...

This sounds like me. Since my kiddos have been old enough to eat real food, I've always made some type of meal (usually something pretty quick/easy.) My kiddos and DH eat whatever the meal is, but there are many times that I'll just eat cereal, an omlet or like tonight a sandwich.

It makes me feel great to read all of these reponses!! I normally cook a meal for dinner, but there is the occasional night that we have "fend for yourself" which consists of cold cereal and toast for me and the kids and whatever DH wants to scrounge up for himself. My mother was shocked and appalled when I told her about it.

When I was a kid, we used to have nights like that about once a week, and I remember really liking those nights. I think I usually ate some kind of lunch meat and cheese and then probably junk:rotfl:

Before I met DW I would often make nachos and instant stuffing for dinner. Apparently I was some kind of savage incapable of eating a vegetable, but now DW has been able to save me from my wicked ways.

We sometimes have soups & sandwiches or something else fast and easy. Also, my kids love it when we have an "upside-down-day' and eat breakfast for dinner! :thumbsup2

I agree, banana splits are also good for dinner, but we save that for celebration days like good report cards .

When we do a "fend for yourself" dinner, I call it "Leftover Derby". We heat up whatever we have in the fridge left over from dinners for the past few days, and everyone grabs what they want. If someone isn't interested in any of the offerings, they can make cereal, a cheese quesadilla, or a PB&J.

When DH is home we eat a full meal, but when it is just DS and I not so much. I am trying to cook proper meals more often and have started to meal plan again, so DS learns some better eating habits.

I am ashamed to ever say what we have sometimes.

Cereal, popcorn, steak (just steak), breakfast, salad (just lettuce), tacos, and spaghetti are all in my "dinner" rotation. The only time we have a meal is when we dine out.

That's lunch, not dinner........

We do this exact thing, "fend for" night, it's leftovers or you make yourself a sandwich or soup. And yes, my kids make their own dinners on "fend for" nights. :) I usually end up having popcorn on these nights....LOL Or a cheese stick and maybe some crackers. :)

I'm seeing an awful lot of cereal in this thread!! Doesn't work for us, neither my dd or I like cereal!

We're in the full meal daily category. Worse, my dd wants the leftovers for after-school snack (or I'll take them to work for lunch), so we don't even get a leftover night. I either cook or buy carryout every single night.

I make dinner every night. I enjoy cooking and I like having leftovers for lunch the next day.

Two of my favorite "non-dinners": baby carrots with hummus or celery with peanut butter. Hand food I can eat and surf the net with ...

It depends on what I have done during the day and how I feel at night. There are some that I don't feel like eating much so I just eat a bowl of cereal or small snack. But most nights I eat a meal.
