DINNER at Goofy's Kitchen

Thank you both I think that it is awsome to serve, the chicken and pizza for breakfast, soemthing different then just the usual.
I looked at the picutes and it looks awsome.

Yep, chicken, pizza and hot dogs seem to be there for every meal (gotta keep the kids interested!). There are a few more 'crossover items' as well, that stick around for all the meals. Then, when dinner rolls around, they take away the French toast and scrambled eggs, etc., and roll out the carved meats and lasagna, dinner salads and all that. Definitely a lot to choose from for meat-eaters as well as vegetarians and vegans.

It looks all so yummy lol. It will be something the kids will remember for a very long time

If you had the choice of doing either Goofys Dinner or Rainforest Cafe which would you do?
Goofy's of course because you can get character meals, all you can eat, and it is a buffet so while one person is pigging out on hot dogs you can be pigging out on desserts and salads. Rainforest Cafe is part of Landry's and you have to sit there and eat off of a set menu. After a while you get tired of the gorilla going off but you do maybe get near the fish tank. I would rather have the buffet and characters and a lot of food to choose from.

Yeah, I think I would agree. But I had to think about it for a minute. Even though I love and prefer the Goofy's breakfast/brunch over the dinner (not because of quality issues or lack of quantity; just personal preference/taste), I would rather have a lot of things to choose from for one set price, and get as much of any certain items I wanted than to just stick with a menu. However, Goofy's is costly (another reason it is not for everyone), and Rainforest Cafe is a good restaurant with good food and a nice tropical atmosphere.

So I say try both! But Goofy's is specific to DLR, whereas there are other Rainforest Cafes around the US which you could go to at other times, so do Goofy's first and then RFC later!;)

You may have had an off meal or two there, but I have been eatig at Goofy's since 1992 (we never miss it on our trips), and the characters definitely come to each table. As for being 'noisy,' I guess it depends on what your tolerance for noise is or what you consider noisy. Dinner is busier than breakfast/brunch, so therefore, will be noisier. But I have never been there where I felt like the noise was unbearable or I would not have gone back so many times in 16 years!;) It's not for everyone - then again, character meals in general are not for everyone - but the characters DO come to each table at Goofy's. I have not seen games, per se. What they do peridocially is get the kids up to dance the Macarena, which they love, and then everybody sits back down.

Actually, brunch has most of the same stuff that breakfast has. It's just that the brunch hours extend until noon or whatever, but it's the same food, more or less - or at least, it has been the same food when we have had late-morning meals there. They USED to do an actual 'lunch' at Goofy's long ago, but stopped that. I have never seen a tri-tip or rice pilaf or enchiladas in the brunch hours! Many of the dinner options are on that list that the PP posted, but I think that list also includes the stuff that is served at breakfast/brunch!! It seems like one comprehensive list integrating all the selections from breakfast/brunch and dinner.

I was just going by the link that was given. I just saw the word "brunch menu" and didn't look at the food listings or see the dinner items on there. (At the menu site, this list posted is "Brunch" menu.) But you're right, the chicken and some of the other things that are listed weren't brunch items when I was there, and I was there late.....the last sitting one time. And, the list has all the regular breakfast/brunch items that I doubt are served at dinner.....like waffles, etc. It does seem to be a comprehensive list, despite how it's labeled.:)

Breakfast/brunch does not have all those items on that list posted above. I have been there countless times. I don't want people to get the wrong idea. If you want to see a lot of photos of the Goofy's breakfast/brunch choices, J.C.andAli'sMom posted a bunch of Goofy's photos on the Dining thread yesterday. That will show you what they have for breakfast/brunch. However, many of the dinner items may be the same as some of what is served in the morning, along with additional dinner-type things, which also seem to be listed above. I think that list is an overview of everything you would see on both Goofy's menus combined, rather than one meal specifically. For example, there is no lasagna served at breakfast/brunch, but it is on that list because it is served for dinner. However, pizza IS served at all the meals, as are hot dogs and chicken!!

I also didn't want people to get the wrong idea....such as the op expecting waffles and other breakfast food at dinner, which is the meal that she asked about. Again, I was just posting what the menu was listed as....."Brunch" which apparently was wrong. I am half here today as my DM is very sick (hospitalized) and the news wasn't good. I was reading the menu and typing as I got a phone call from my family. I'm trying to distract myself by being on the board, but it's not helping much. :-(

Yes, it has always been great for me to eat lunch foods there for breakfast....as I have a yeast allergy and breads, etc. are out for me. I'm glad it's more of a brunch meal and includes things nor normally served at breakfast, as Sherry E has said. :)

I meant to say that the TRI_TIP that you mentioned (not the chicken) definitely isn't a brunch item!...LOL I'm just not "with it" today.....due to the bad news with my DM's health.....and my sister just had major surgery 7 days ago also. Life's really hard for my family right now and my brain is functioning at WAY less a level than it usually is. But this is my comfort place.....so here I am. :)

Yeah, I know what you mean about seeing the 'brunch' label. Sometimes the info on other sites seems to be slighly incorrect or not updated, so it would be easy for someone to look at that one big whopping list and assume that all of those items were available for breakfast/brunch or all of them for dinner, rather than see it is just a comprehensive overview of both meals' items combined! While the spreads for both breakfast/brunch and dinner are impressive and vast, and nobody will go hungry, they are not quite that vast!!:lmao: I would love to see tri-tip and lasagna for breakfast, too, but not so far! And I agree - I don't want people thinking they will go to dinner and get scrambled eggs, nor go to breakfast and eat prime rib!! But seeing all those items together on that one list sure does look appetizing!

Hang in there with your DM.:goodvibes:hug: I hope everything goes okay for her. I think many of us can relate to coming onto DISboards and trying to distract ourselves from some of life's problems - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But you can always rest assured that if you need to get your mind off of something, there will be some sort of dining thread, favorite DLR sounds thread, favorite sights, shops, picture threads, etc., etc. to jump into and kind of lose yourself for a while!!:goodvibes

Thank you for your kind words. :) Yes, I needed to lose myself on this board for a while, but I was so distracted by what was going on that I didn't even read what was there.....just saw a HUGE list...LOL
BTW.....I love reading your posts (and my 13 y.o. DS does too!) I have gotten so much good info. from them and they are always so extensive. I think I may just have to move into your back yard in So. Cal. (from here in rainy WA... yuck!).....so I can go REALLY often and gain all the knowledge that you have. I am SO jealous of all you people who live so close!...LOL

Oh thank you - that's really nice of you to say.:goodvibes I have always been really wordy in writing (much to everyone's annoyance!), but I try to put a lot of thought into what 2 cents I am throwing in, so at least if I have to ramble on I can provide some good info and it's not a total waste of time for everyone reading!:lmao: :lmao: No matter how knowledgeable any of us are about DLR, we are constantly learning new things from each other on DISboards, so not only is it a fun place to be, it is also informative. Even though I live sort of close, more or less, to DLR (it's about 45 minutes away on a light traffic day), I don't get there nearly as often as I would prefer to anymore, and not nearly as often as other DIS'ers do! In fact, this year I kind of have to focus on other things (non-Disney) that may prevent me from going to DLR in 2009 altogether (unless I get a major case of the DSE - Disney Snowball Effect - Syndrome and can't stay away!!). I have a friend who lives in Anaheim, right down the street from DLR (she listens to the fireworks every night), but she only goes to DLR when we have an official trip there, maybe around Halloween or Christmas. If I lived where she lives, I would literally be there - just for a few hours at a time - probably every other weekend. I would go just to stroll around for a while, maybe take some pictures, look in some shops, people watch and then leave, and come back 2 weeks later and do the same thing.

If you haven't already, come over to my Trip Report (link is in my signature below), which covers two trips to DLR from last year and pictures from DLR trips spanning 1972 - 2008. Even if you don't read all of it, there's lots of pictures to look through - and lots of pictures from Goofy's (not the food, sadly, but the characters) over the years sprinkled throughout the TR.

Anyway, again, good luck to your DM and to you, and stay strong!:grouphug:

I'm so sorry to hear about your mom and sister. I am praying their health improves and you can get some stress-free relaxation time. I know it is tough, and I appreciated your list. I figured it was comprehensive from both meals, so don't you worry about that. I appreciate every answer I've gotten. I feel so helpless when it comes to DLR as I am a WDW vet, and I am so grateful for all the wonderful people here who can provide honest opinions to little ol' me. Good luck with your family stuff - hang it there! :grouphug:

We went to Goofy's Kitchen for dinner on 3/22, and weren't very impressed. We normally do at least half a dozen character meals at WDW, and I felt like this was inferior to all of those.

The price is high (over $100 for two adults and two kids, even with a discount). With the peak season rates, it would have been $117, but since we were quoted the normal rates when we booked the ADR, the manager credited us back most of the difference.

The characters were fine, but it was busy enough that the didn't spend much time at our table.

The interactivity (baking a cake and Goofy spilling stuff) was just too packed. All you could see was a mass of kids around Goofy.

The service was very good. Our waiter was very attentive, getting us drink refills.

The variety of food was much less than we expected. We thought it would be comparable to Chef Mickey's at WDW, which was great. It was a similar concept, but the food seemed much more average. The prime rib was the main thing I ate. The chili was good (I had a bowl) and the hot dogs looked good, but I hate to fill up on "cheap food" when I'm paying $40 for a buffet. The shrimp was basically popcorn shrimp. The fish was bland. The pork was bland. Even the horseradish sauce for the prime rib was bland. The desserts were good (and a good selection), but there just wasn't much "real food" to choose from, and virtually all of it was cheap food. Even something like a Golden Corral buffet (well under $10) would have better food and more variety.

I realize that the character experience is the main thing, but for that price the food should be good as well.

Well, I disagree with you 100% that Goofy's does not have much in the way of 'real food' or variety, especially considering how many people are served daily - I actually think the quality AND variety are great (the variety is much more bountiful than at the other DLR buffets) - and I eat there as much for the food as the characters; maybe even more for the food than the characters. Sometimes it is more crowded than other times. Sometimes the food is not as tasty at certain hours as other hours. Sometimes there are more characters out than at other times. That is the nature of all character meals. But character meals are only worth it to anyone if they meet the diners' personal and individual requirements. What may work for me is not necessarily going to be okay with someone else, and what someone else likes is not necessarily going to work for me. We all have different requirements.:goodvibes

All that said, I maintain and have always maintained that the Goofy's breakfast/brunch is the way to go - and NOT the dinner. I wouldn't suggest that you go back for breakfast because I don't think it will be worth it to spend that money in hopes you like it, but you may have liked the breakfast better. Have you tried the other DLR character meals yet? Maybe you will like one of the other ones.

I doubt that I'll try breakfast or any of the other restaurants at DLR. Goofy's Kitchen sounded like the best, based on the things I typically look for. If I was unimpressed with that, I would probably be even less impressed with the others. It's not that it was bad, just that I was expecting quite a bit more.

I guess I'm just spoiled by WDW and their dining plan (especially when it's free). It creates tremendous value, and there are some absolutely fantastic restaurants there.

Just to clarify, here are the foods I remember and how I would classify them:

Carving station - Prime rib and pork while we were there. This was the only decent food that was worth the money to me, but I like a little more variety.

Numerous desserts, fruits, and soft serve ice cream - Excellent selection, but not the reason I come to a buffet.

Salad bar and various salads - Good selection, but this is basically just a salad bar. I'm not going to fill up on salad at an expensive buffet.

Kids selections - PB&J pizza, pepperoni pizza, hot dogs, spaghetti, mac & cheese, and popcorn shrimp. All cheap, junky food. Buffet filler. The popcorn shrimp (as it is everywhere) is almost entirely breading. The little piece of shrimp in the middle is smaller than a pencil eraser.

Sides - corn on the cob, rice, potatos, mixed veggies, chili, soup, rolls. I'm not going to fill up on these cheap sides at a buffet.

Other than that, the only things I remember was pasta, some sort of baked fish, and some mainly vegetarian dishes.

The thing that's missing is any main dishes and other meats. It's almost entirely salads, cheap kids food, sides, and desserts.

The reason I was not thrilled with the dinner buffet when I did it a LONG time ago was more to do with my not being too hungry at that point, so nothing looked appealing to me. If I had been famished, maybe I would have scarfed down the whole buffet! I remember several different things like souffles, casseroles and various chicken dishes, and there seemed to be a lot of food choices other than salads and soup and rice. But again, this was ages ago (back in the '90s). I just wasn't hungry for any of what was there, and so I have been reluctant to go back there for dinner because I have memories of paying a large sum for dinner and not being hungry enough to eat! However, the Goofy's breakfast is the thing that has kept me going back there since 1992, and recently I was saying that I thought I should give the dinner another try, because it's been years and years since my last dinner there, and presumably the menu had changed. Recently, DizNee Luver posted a list of all the food items recently found at the Goofy's Kicthen buffets (both breakfast and dinner) and I thought dinner choices looked good and that I may give it another try. But it is a LOT of money to spend if you are not sure you will like it, so I may just stick with the tried and true for me - Goofy's Breakfast Buffet!!

And I agree - I don't think you should go back and try Goofy's again, and I say that even though Goofy's is my favorite restaurant in DLR!!:lmao: I usually tell people on DIS that if they have had an unsatisfactory experience at any character meal, it is too much money to risk trying it a second time and hoping for the best, unless money is not a big concern. It is painful to leave anywhere - restaurant or otherwise - knowing you shelled out a chunk of $$ and were not content. It is not like you just ate at Carnation Cafe, didn't like it and want to risk trying it again. That wouldn't be such a big financial hit, but the character meals - even with AP discounts - are $$$$!!:scared1:

I'll probably stick with WDW for dining experiences and just focus on the rides and attractions at DLR. We've booked a long (9 days in '07, 14 in '08 and '09) annual off-season trip to WDW with the free dining plan for the past several years. It's an incredible value and there are so many great restaurant choices. The four of us can go for 14 days and the total bill for the value resort, theme park and water park admissions, and way more (great) food than we should eat is under $2500. I figure we eat $2000 to $2500 worth of food (although we wouldn't eat anywhere near as nice if we had to pay for it), so it's like going for half price. That's about the same as if we paid $50/night for the hotel, $150/each for the parks, a buck each for 56 snacks (including waffle cones, shakes, floats, cheesecake, funnel cakes, and Food & Wine Festival items), $5 each per counter service meal (with choices like Wolfgang Puck Express, chicken & rib combos, pizza, gourmet sandwiches, including drinks and dessert) and $15 each per table service (steakhouses, buffets, tepanyaki, character meal, etc.). I think there are well over 100 table service restaurants at WDW, and many of them are fabulous.

I don't regret spending $100+ on it, though. I just don't consider it quite as good or anywhere near as much of a value as most of the character meals we've been to at WDW.

Yes, from all that I have read, the dining experience is a whole separate thing to enjoy about WDW, just like the hotels of WDW are sort of their own attraction. You really need 14 days to explore not only the parks but the different meal options, roam the hotels, etc. The resturant choices do look great, and if I ever get there, the Dining Plan sounds like the best option to save $$.

I was shocked when my friend took her son and husband to WDW in 2007 and stayed at the Port Orleans for a FULL week, and that hotel price with Park Hoppers, if I am not mistaken, was at that time a little cheaper than 3 days at the GCH out here at DLR w/ Hoppers!!:scared1: Yikes!
